    Give ’em hell Lindsey… keep riding your motorcycle and writing posts for your blog…

    in reply to: The Great Fossil Hunt #1881050

    I also recommend visiting this park. I have stopped here twice on motorcycle trips across Iowa, and found the nearby (and much older) Brachiopod (GCJB0G) cache. Like decdogg says, the fossils are literally everywhere. I probably took a half dozen good Brachiopod fossils, and found some less common coral and snail fossils.

    But watch yourself on the slopes of the quarry! The last time I was there, I got caught in huge thunderstorm. I tried to quickly get back up to the parking area. (Why I don’t know… it is not like I had a vehicle to sit in to stay dry! :)). When I got close to the top of one of the “hills”, there was a mini avalanche and the next thing I know I was at the bottom… dirty, bruised, and with a bloody nose! 😳

    in reply to: Help!! Our furnace died!! #1880943

    Figures the furnace dies just before the first cold snap! They had no suggestions on how to fix the furnace, or would the fix be too expensive to be worth it?

    I’ve had good luck with Nimmer Heating and Air Conditioning (http://www.nimmer.com / (414) 543-3626), but only for tune ups and A/C recharges. Angie’s List Milwaukee recommends the following companies for HVAC work on the south side of the metro area (in no particular order, all won “superior service” awards in ’06):

    DONOVAN & JORGENSON INC
    NEW BERLIN , WI 53151

    SEIDER HEATING & COOLING

    NEW BERLIN HEATING & AIR C…

    Hopefully others will chime in with some suggestions before you get too cold… and if you really are going to replace that furnace, the choice of who you go with will obviously depend on what brand furnace you want.

    Here is the photo that you guys were promised a couple weeks ago. WGA Board Member Brian Jansen (GrouseTales) is on the left with Butch Siegel, a volunteer at Hartman Creek, showing off the GPS unit the WGA donated to the park.

    Jeremy are you sure we didn’t finally get at the computer with that Off Topic forum??????

    We’ve had to add some additional storage capacity to handle all the posts, but so far the thread stealers have not killed the server. Keep trying guys! 😛

    @PCFrog wrote:

    Oh… I was so hoping that the reason for the servers being down was due to the fact that yall were prepping the site for the WGA coin sale. 😆

    It was good to get this problem “out of our system” BEFORE the coins went on sale. We are lucky this did not occur during the geocoin sale, as we probably would have lost some serious coin. 😉

    Way to go Lindsey! Now what is this picture that Justin wants you to post? You guys didn’t do something weird or illegal, did you?

    in reply to: Cache Rescue #1880141

    @Team Hemisphere Dancer wrote:

    So what you are saying is when a reviewer archives a cache due to inactivity on the owner anyone can submit a rescue mission?

    Or for arguments sake, any individual can request a mission on any given cache out there? Even if it doesn’t really need rescuing?

    Anyone can submit a cache rescue mission for any cache, but it is primarily for the cleanup of archived caches and for owners to request help with their caches. Note that you could submit a rescue mission for a cache that is not yours (and possibly does not need maintenance)… we’ve never had a mission like this submitted, and obviously we’d take a closer look at things if a non-owner submitted a mission.

    @hogrod wrote:

    Anyway I was glad to see River cache (GC611) listed on the rescue list until I realized this wasn’t really a rescue list. This is a list of cache sites that require cleanup of possible old geo-trash and broken containers.

    So far, we’ve mostly used it for the cleanup of archived caches, but the option exists for using it to report that maintenance is needed on a cache.

    Maybe it could be modified to also list caches needing adoption? That way owners who could no longer maintain a cool cache could list it there, and someone else could take care of it (thus rescuing it).

    @hogrod wrote:

    River cache being such a cool location and one of the oldest caches in the state it was somewhat sad to see it go. It was one of the many geocaches near baraboo that has went missing this year.

    I’m with you on this one. This was maybe my 20th find way back in 2001, and it is still in my “top ten” list… I wish there were more caches like that one…

    in reply to: Pip hos unite! #1879930

    Sounds easy enough to implement… so you’d click a button or something on someone’s post, and then you could give a pip/karma point/thumbs up or thumbs down, and optionally enter a comment that only the original poster could see?

    Would there be some sort of limit on how many pips you could give in a day/week? And a limitation on how many you could give to one individual?

    @cheezehead wrote:

    I belong to a hunting site that gives karma points, positive or negative. It is my belief is that all it does is makes it a popularity contest.

    Would there be any benefit to having this feature and NOT displaying someone’s “score”? I would think you could always PM some to give them a thumbs up/pip/or karma point, but it may not be as convenient…

    Looks like the new version of phpBB has a feature along these lines called “Friends and Foes”. If you mark someone as a friend, all their posts are specially marked and appear in a special Friends section. If you mark someone as a foe, their posts are not displayed to you at all. You can optionally make the “Friends and Foes” information public… so you could see how many friends and foes an individual has.

    Fellas, these sample forum titles were fictional and for entertainment purposes only. Any resemblance to any person, living or dead; place, real, historical, or imaginary; or thing, bigger or smaller than a breadbox, is purely coincidental.

    At least that is what my lawyer, Billy Martin, told me to say. 😀 He comes highly recommended by Mr. “Pit Bull” Vick and Hon. Senator “I’m Not Gay” Craig. 😉

    in reply to: Badger State Challenge – 72 counties #1879626

    @furfool wrote:

    Is there a challenge here for those who have already completed the Delorme challenge? It seems to me to be more of a two-for, except of course for the final. I started to do each county then realized that if I go for the Delorme page, that I will hit two birds with one stone. Maybe I’m missing something?? I think that it’s a great idea though.

    You can complete all the counties without hitting all the DeLorme pages (like Piwko and I did last summer… at the time there was no DeLorme challenge) or complete all the DeLorme pages without getting all the counties (like zuma, lagrac, and others have done). Obviously if you know you want to complete both challenges, it will be easier to do them simultaneously… but not a given (a two-for), as you will probably have to find caches that only count for a page or county but not both.

    Anyway, thanks for setting this Ralph and Gary. I know several people (including myself) have thought about creating such a county challenge cache but we did not get off our butts to do so. And I see you even managed to get it set up near the center of the state (Pittsville)… 😀 It is in a great arboretum, but I a little leary about heading back after what happened to me the last time I was there for GCH1FQ (log).

    Make that 3,001 registered users. Does anyone know where we were one year ago; just to put things in perspective?

    Pulled these numbers from the database since I was bored at work…

    Now: 3002
    1/1/2007: 2454
    9/29/2006 (last year): 2288
    1/1/2006: 1265
    1/1/2005: 799
    1/1/2004: 440
    1/1/2003: 116
    When WGA website officially opened for business: 2/19/2002: 9

    Way to go guys… I thought this was going to be nearly impossible to pull off when I first heard the idea. But it seems that all the pre-planning paid off!

    And only 49 states with 1000 Earthcaches left to go! Then you guys can put out a “Climate Change” earthcache (calculate the number of pounds of CO2 generated during the various Team BenDigiFu cache runs, and how many degrees warmer the earth is due to this). 😉

    the latest what????

    So you don’t have the latest firmware then… 🙂

    (Firmware (n): computer programs contained permanently in a hardware device (as a read-only memory). Garmin uses the terminology “unit software”. Where I work it is usually called “embedded software”.)

    Go here and download the Garmin WebUpdater software:

    http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

    Basically, this program will check for the latest firmware released by Garmin for your GPS and update it if it is out of date. Even if this doesn’t fix the problem you are having in the truck, it is good to be running the latest firmware so you don’t run into some other weird bugs that they have fixed since your unit was manufactured.

    in reply to: Garmin 60cs #1878967

    The Silverado does not appear on the list of vehicles that are known to cause issues with the I-PASS transponders (and therefore are likely to not work well with GPSrs either). (Although they do say that all ’99 Chevrolets with Solar Ray/Solar Tint windshields can have an issue.)

    I-PASS Special Windshield Mounting Instructions

    Are there any sources of interference in the truck? Maybe a CB radio, a high powered car stereo, external cell phone antenna, etc.?

    Maybe the unit is defective and the vibration when sitting on the dash causes it to fail?

    Any chance you can try it out in another vehicle?

    Sounds like an intermittent problem that may be a pain to figure out…

    I copied the group photos from Ken’s album to the new Geo-Picnic album that Tie (Brian) created. Here is a direct link to the group photo:

    Also note that you can click on the image in the photo album to “super size” it (so you can actually see faces… maybe not a good thing :)).

    Jeremy, is there a place for me to upload other photos from the event?

    The permissions on the new “Geo-Picnic 2007” album should be set so that anyone with a user account can upload pictures. So if anyone took pictures at the event they’d like to share with the group, this is where they should go.
