I’m really curious about the GPS features, besides the dog tracking usage. Will it do auto-routing?
Per other reviews, the “core” of this unit is the GPS60CSx, so you’ve got a color screen, autorouting, SD card slot for expansion, and the electronic compass and barometer.

Eligibility: All active members twenty-one (21) years of age or older that have been actively geocaching for a minimum of six (6) months are eligible to serve on the Board of Directors.
How would you define actively geocaching if it isn’t about the numbers?
The intent of this part of the bylaws was to ensure that no one who ran for the Board had less than 6 months of geocaching “experience”. At the time, there were many greenhorns and this provision was simply trying to keep people who may quit geocaching and quit the Board before the end of their two year term from running.
Now we have the opposite problem with some members having years and years of geocaching experience but maybe no longer “actively geocaching” (depending on your definition). We did not consider this situation 5 years ago, and I think it would be unfair to use this article to exclude certain people from running. This would kind of be like a court twisting a law passed for one reason to cover something else entirely.
Personally, I think the Board should reword the article so that it is clear we want someone who has been involved in the sport for at least six months (or maybe even a year). As far as whether someone who meets the experience criteria is an active geocacher should be left up to the members to decide by voting.
If someone hasn’t logged a cache in months or even years, would you vote for them? Maybe this has no bearing on whether they would be an effective leader of the organization? Maybe this means that they are completely out of touch with what geocaching is in Wisconsin today, and are also not familiar with the geocachers (the people that make the WGA great) either? Members can view the candidates’ geocaching.com profiles (and are encouraged to do so), look at their finds and hides, and answer these questions for themselves.

“I came, I saw, I allowed (or permitted)”
Per this list of latin verbs.
Maybe he isn’t a latin expert and actually meant:
veni, vidi, quaesivi
“I came, I saw, I looked for (and obtained)”
If you know Marc, it definitely isn’t supposed to be:
veni, vidi, scripsi
“I came, I saw, I wrote (i.e. signed the log)”
Or maybe this is just one of Marc’s puzzles that we aren’t meant to solve. 🙂
Ron, would the clues/hints you give eventually lead to coordinates that you plug into your GPSr to find the tickets (Ã la puzzle geocache)? Or would the clues be something that would allow you to find them without a GPSr, maybe only with a compass, like in letterboxing?

I would have to ask who came up with the present logo and why? What do the majority of WGA members think of the present vs new logo?
The current logo was developed with the input/direction of the “founding fathers” back when (Fall 2001) we realized we were going to be launching a website and had no logo for our group. I came up with a couple options and this is the one that was chosen. At that time we didn’t have forums or a website, so there was no way to poll the membership (well there were no members to poll either ;)).
While the Board would have the power to change the logo on their own, I think getting some input from the membership would be prudent. After all, the logo represents the entire organization so we want the majority of the membership to agree with any changes to this important part of our identity.
I believe there is only one cache in the small Maribel Caves Park:
GCGJ1B Maribel: Here Be Monsters
I’ve been meaning to make it to this park and find this cache for over a year (it is just off I-43), but I haven’t done so yet…
Here is a recent news article about the cave (it was discovered in 1984 and started to be excavated in 2003, so this is not really new news):

I must have changed the subject simultaneously Bec… guess we both have nothing better to do than monitor these forums. 🙂

Everyone took the “Big” container at face value.. none stumpled over the clue or micro.. thought it was over and had a blast anyways.. I had to check the micro a couple of times just to make sure that someone didn’t think it was ‘trash’ and walked off with it.. at one event.. it was actually very visible.. but all were reading and laughing so much that when I put the container back.. none noticed my ‘owner maintenance’.
How do we know you’re not lying to us again Lorrie? ❓ 😀
If there really was a micro and no one found it, you definitely had the last laugh. And if there was no micro, fabricating this story about additional Gauntlet waypoints was extremely clever (I’d expect nothing less from the devious Lil Otter).
So bottom line… The Gauntlet was really NOT a true liars cache after all (at least after the micro and additional waypoints were supposedly added).

[ Now, I’m looking for a site to order Navigator NT but the only site that I find it on is the Garmin site for $139.27.

Nobody else has NT?
Many places have NT… and $120 seems to be the street price. You can get it from Amazon for $120 but they list that it takes 2-4 weeks to ship (not sure if this is true though). Amazon Link
I’ve bought a lot of Garmin stuff through GPS City, including City Navigator 8 (but not the NT) version… they have it for $120 also: GPS City Link

The GIF is no longer animated. Anyone know why?
If it is the one in your photo album (the headbanger), as Cheesehead Dave pointed out, it appears to be working fine.
The WGA photo album will strip out the animation from any GIF file it has to resize (this is a feature not a bug :D), but this one was small enough that it wasn’t touched so the animation remains.
Send me a PM with the details Marc and I’ll give you a hand.

I had the urge to resurrect this forum in honor of the “Ol’lady….standing still”, and I can’t see a project of Jeremy’s unfinished.
I gave up on this little project when it started to run out of gas and the suggestions became silly. Sorry guys.
Anyway, today, January 6th is the twelfth day of Christmas. So here is the version of the song that we collectively came up with… I kind of mixed in some suggestions along with my own material for the last six days. Somebody come up with a geocoin design that includes this list and I’ll set up the WGA Store and we’ll start selling these babies. 🙂
On the twelfth day of Christmas, Signal the Frog gave to me:
Twelve miles a-hiking
Eleven thorns a-fraying
Ten toes a-freezing
Nine muggles milling
Eight aunties naeing
Seven (Green Jeep) TBs missing
Six caches a-laying (buried a foot deep in the snow, so there is no chance in hell that I’ll find them)
Five golden (WI) geocoins
Four sticking burrs
Tree evil monkeys
Two double As

Why are the number of posts made by each candidate listed? I think most posts are just opinions and really have no bearing on the ability to lead but I may be wrong. No, I’m not.
The number of posts someone has made is a standard part of a WGA user profile; it was not put there just for the candidates. Many people have listed the counties they have visited in our State/County Stats module… this information is available in their WGA user profile by clicking on the States/Counties/Countries tab (if present).
We are also allowing candidates to submit one web link that will be put on the ballot along with the links to their WGA and geocaching.com user profiles. In previous years, candidates have linked to their personal websites and some of the more ambitious ones have created “campaign pages” describing themselves and their qualifications, and outlining what they plan to do if elected. Also, all candidates are invited to post information about themselves in the Candidates Corner forum.
Bottom line, we are trying to provide as much information as possible about the candidates so members can make informed decisions when voting.
The entire BoB series is temporarily disabled right now… hopefully they are able to get the damaged caches repaired come spring.
Anyway, I did it with Piwko (Keith) and it took us 8 hours with 8 additional regular caches. Several of these other caches weren’t easy park and grabs (required significant hiking), so this probably added 2 hours. I think we also stopped for lunch. So 6 hours would be a conservative estimate, but I’ve talked to folks who claim to have done the series in less than 4 hours.
I have some other tips in my log for BoB 99:

Hey Jeremy… u making housecalls to TR yet?? LOL
For the Fu, I would travel around the globe just like Ferdinand Magellan.
Actually, I had problems with the eXplorist and the USB driver while doing the GPS downloads at the All-A-Glow event in the fall. Eventually I got it working, but it seemed kind of flaky. (But I’m a Garmin guy and all this Magellan stuff appears Greek (or is it French?) to me. :))
One thing you might want to do is pull the SD card out of the unit (I’m assuming you have a card and are not downloading to internal memory), plug it into a USB flash card reader (like this), and download waypoint files directly to the card. That way, you wouldn’t have to bother getting the GPS itself to connect to your PC, which seems to be the source of most of the problems (at least it was for me).

It is my understanding that the base map is always there, and that the Mapsource maps are loaded on top of it.
Correct, if you delete all the maps you are left with the base map. I don’t remember if you can delete all the maps through the menus on the eTrex unit, or if you have to download a blank map set with Mapsource to get this to happen.
You may also want to do a reset of the unit before selling it. This would clear out all the Mapsource maps, plus waypoints, routes, tracks, personal settings, etc. restoring it to its “out of box” state. Information on the secret key sequence for the reset can be found here:
http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/secret.htm
and
http://www.geocities.com/etrexkb/undoc_etrex.htmNow are the Mapsource maps loaded into your eTrex the ones that have to be unlocked (tied to a particular unit)? If so, is there any way of undoing things so you can download maps to a different unit? I’ve never sold a unit so I haven’t had this problem…
