  • This happened in the recent past… I cleaned up the garbage and thought I changed a setting that would prevent non-members (anonymous users) from leaving comments. Unfortunately there was still a way for these bots to submit comments without being logged in… sort of a back door which apparently they found.

Anyway, the loophole should be closed and the new batch of spam comments in the photo album is now gone.

I believe there is a tiny timing window where the part of the database that tracks whether there are new message(s) gets out of sync with what has actually been read. But I’ve never been able to reproduce it so I don’t really know how to fix it. It has happened a handful of times in three years.

A possible “solution” (really a hack) would be to add a button somewhere that would allow users to reset this new message indication on their own. But for now, if this happens to someone else, let me know and I can reset it. (BTW, sandlanders, I believe I have rid you of the annoying flashing red flag.)

I’m not sure what you mean about messages getting stuck in the Outbox. They sit in the Outbox until they are picked up, when they are moved to the Sentbox. Are you saying that you sent a PM that never made it to its recipient?

Next time you come across a hard find play the game in reverse. Pretend you found it when you really didn’t and let him continue searching. All the while you are laughing on the inside.

I don’t think she’d do this to me since she is typically motivated to get moving on to the next cache.

I prefer giving it away by yelling the hootie (generosity of spirit of course… 😉 …and well, I wanna get more caches!)

In any case, I could take a really long time to spot the cache (not intentionally of course ;)), possibly hours, which would totally foil her plans for revenge.

Seriously, I do like to see everyone in the group locate the cache, even if it is a normal run of the mill hide… so I back away, (usually) say ‘Finder’s Tree’ or something, and let them keep searching. This gives everyone a chance to experience the pleasure / thrill / satisfaction of finding the cache for themselves. And that’s what geocaching is all about right? (Or is it the numbers? ;))

in reply to: WGA webpage size #1915963

    What browser are you using?

Nothing should have changed on the WGA site recently that would have caused this, and the WGA site should still look OK (no side to side scrolling) even in an 800 pixel wide browser window.

I agree with the previous two posters… either you have increased the magnification / zoom level or increased the default text size. Miata’s tip should fix this in both IE and Firefox.

I carry one of the SwissCards in my wallet so I always have it with me. This thin plastic card contains a small knife and some other useful tools for caching:

    – Tweezers for pulling out micro and nano logs
    – Mini pen for those times you hike a mile to a cache and realize you forgot yours in the car when you go to sign the log
    – LED penlight (at least the version I have) for impromptu night caching
    – Pin for removing splinters and bursting people’s bubble when they get too inflated after repeatedly finding caches before you do

    SwissCard Lite

I’m also a Kershaw – Ken Onion fan, and I normally carry the Chive but also have the Leek.

At the request of the Board, I added something this year that automatically “expired” and removed news stories from the front page after 60 days (unless something was done to keep them there). This resulted in the completely blank page you saw this week… I’m not sure if seeing nothing is better than seeing old news though.

I promise to add something newsworthy today… we have an announcement coming about 2010 WGA events.

OK, I went back a second time and also saw the fake installer box pop up. It has been removed from the Quick Links box (again) until they clean up their act.

It does not show up as an attack site for me either, but I do see some weird Javascript on the page. For those getting it blocked by their virus software, is there a reason / name / type of threat listed?

in reply to: Group Campsite II Update #1914074

Here’s the scoop. If you are camping in the group site you need to register at the park office when you arrive. They are keeping a vehicle log.

You can register and set up any time after 3pm. The park office is only open until about 9:30, so you must arrive by then.

in reply to: Picnic Registration Open #1910362

    Bump.

If you are coming to the Geo-Picnic, please register by the end of this weekend. I know the event page says registration closes today, but we are going to leave it open until midnight on Sunday (September 13).

If you don’t register, you won’t get nametags and may not get printed materials if a lot of other folks crash the party too.

If you have any last minute changes after registration is closed, contact the WGA Secretary (secretary wi geocaching com) or post the information on the geocaching.com event cache page.

And don’t forget about the 2009 Geo-Picnic After Party event (GC1XWKQ) being held Sunday morning after the picnic.

Sorry… I have the campsite for both nights (Friday and Saturday).

That company wouldnt happen to start with an H would it? That is why I asked to help make my training decisions, but my boss decided for me, go to first available class. So I am there for training on the 28th to 2nd.

If you are there during the same time we could do some post training caching!

Nope, not the same company, but I think I know which one you are talking about.

I’m there the week before you, but plan to stay over at least a day or two to give me some “post training caching” time. If anyone knows of any other must do caches in the Bay area (or even north of SF… i.e. Redwoods National Park, etc.), let me know.

Hmm, I might have to look for that one… GCF7A2. I will be in Santa Clara while attending a training class at a “major Silicon Valley technology company” in a few weeks.

Paul, there is a “”Let’s Go Geocaching” brochure available on the geocacher-u site:

    http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/brochure1.pdf

There are some things I don’t like about it (one is that is doesn’t always seem to fold up right after printing :x), but in general it is pretty good introduction.

There is a space where you can “customize” it with your own message before printing. When I print them for WGA events I always add something like:

    Wisconsin Geocaching Association

    – Hosts Statewide and Regional Events
    – Provides WI Geocaching Information
    – Online Discussion Forums
    – Free Membership

    wi-geocaching.com

How did you download the caches? And what type of GPS units were you using?

I’ve got a 60csx and the caches were downloaded the night before at the meet and greet event. Mine didn’t have the 09 codes either.

There was a rogue “guy in the hall” downloading stuff on Friday night. We can’t be responsible for anything that guy was doing… apparently (from what we can deduce) he was using smart names and also giving people the cache information from 2008? While this person was trying to be helpful, it really just caused more confusion and we had to “fix” (redownload) a number of people on Saturday morning.
