Short Answers:
Going: Yes… I will be bringing along Piwko Kurczak (a Gauntlet rookie… new blood ;)) so put us down for 2
Camping: no
What nights: n/a
Willing to chip in some money for food: Yes, unlimited $ for food on Saturday nightLong Answers:
We’ll be Trudy camping in a hotel near Lil Otter’s undisclosed location. So we’ll probably stop by the makeshift campground on Friday night.
Also, we’d be up for any caching after the Gauntlet… maybe some night caching on Saturday night? Wish I had time to do the award winning Lone Rock cache again that weekend, but I recommend it to those who will be in the area with some time on their hands. Hmm, maybe doing this one for the fourth time as a night cache might work… 😯

Saturday 22JUL06 meeting at the beginning pt of the Gauntlet, at 9, 1000 being the latest
After the COMPLETING the Gauntlet Back to Lil Otter’s to where my mom and sister is going to have food, and drinks for celebration of completing the Gauntlet Party Time! 😀Thanks for offering this Lindsey… we’ll definitely be hungry and thirsty by dinner time.
Let me throw out one alternative. We could have dinner at a restaurant in the Dells/Baraboo area on Saturday night instead. This would save your mom/sister from having a cook a big meal, planning how much food to prepare, collecting payment for food, etc. It may also be convenient for those not camping Saturday night, as it is like a 40 mile detour to go back to Lil Otter’s place.
But you’re running the show Lindsey, so we’ll go along with whatever you plan for a post-Gauntlet celebration.
The great maps that Team B Squared (Brian) made for us are finally in use on the WGA site.
Check out this news article for the details…

(hobbling around).. I sure hope my sprained ankle is better come July 22nd about 8am .. (smiles).. that’s the correct time we are meeting up at the Gauntlet, right???
8am may be too early for the non-camping folks driving to The Gauntlet on the 22nd. I looked it up and we (Bunny FuFu’s team) started at 9:30am last year.
Marc and Bob, you guys probably have the longest drive… can you make it there by 9am? We could push the start time back a little (Lil’) bit to accommodate some people who are driving there that morning, but it would be nice to have as much daylight as possible.
Lorrie, I hope you didn’t sprain your ankle checking on your own cache!? 😉 Sounds like The Gauntlet has claimed another victim… 😈

so who all has pictures from the event and where are they posting? (there was mention of a picture of a canoe on the back of another boat)
I created a sub-album for the Rock Island event in the WGA photo album.
Currently everyone has permission to upload/add photos to this album.
General note on the WGA photo album: In the future I plan to add a feature where members can create their own sub-albums in the WGA photo album and manage album permissions (to give others the ability to add photos to albums they own, etc.). But for now, if you want a personal photo album or one for an event, contact me or a Board member (hopefully one that is tech savvy ;)) and we’ll get one created for you.

From what I’m hearing … If I had a Blackberry, I’d feel compelled to still want a PalmPilot for caching
I would agree with this Ron.
The only advantage of the BlackBerry is the ability to go online to get the absolute latest information for a cache or TB… but you can get this same functionality in a Palm device like the T|X (wi-fi) or Treo (cell).
BlackBerries are really designed to work “online” or with a connection to the Internet. If you have a connection, you can always get cache information from the WAP or low-fi version of geocaching.com using the internal web browser:
I couldn’t find a decent offline HTML browser for the BlackBerry. If they had one, you could generate HTML cache pages from a PQ on your PC and load them into the device. (This would be sort of like the GSAK/Plucker or Spinner/Plucker combo for the Palm.) Then you wouldn’t need to have a connection to Internet.
This offline browser (Plusmo) will grab pages from the Internet for offline viewing on the BB. So I think you could make HTML pages from a PQ, put them on the web somewhere, and tell this application to fetch them… kind of a hack.
Another option would be to email the cache information to your BlackbBerry, maybe as an attachment? Remember this is what the BlackBerry is really designed to do… allow reading and responding to email on the go.

Congratulations! Which cache and which state?
See their list of milestones for a link to the cache and log where they hit 500. Since they entered their geocaching.com profile link, we’ve also been picking up their logs from all over the western U.S in our Recent Logs module.
Congrats as well… I knew when I met you guys during the Lone Rock cache day that you were serious cachers (and seriously having fun geocaching as a family, which is more important).

Somehow I’m not finding the day of this expedition. Can someone refresh the date for me? – Thanks, Cachew –

But the date is going to be THE 22nd of JULY!! so there you go!
This is why we have to abandon this topic and start a new fresh topic John (we want everyone to know the date, and need to know who is attending)…

Has anyone seen the latest log on the Gauntlet?
Anyone have a helicopter that we can use?
The sad thing is they tried to make it easy with the helicopter but ended up running into problems anyway. No one runs The Gauntlet “clean”… you just prepare ahead of time and bring enough equipment to tackle most any situation, and know you are going to have an adventure doing it (this is the fun of it).
Speaking of problems, a common problem with summertime finders seems to be bee/wasp stings. The problem may be even worse this year (right Bec? :)) due to the lack of rainfall in central WI this spring. I was talking to a friend of mine who is doctor, and she gave me a bunch of these bee/wasp/insect sting swabs. They have lidocaine for pain relief (they actually numb your skin), and something to keep down the swelling (cortisone?).
Also, if anyone going is allergic to bee stings let me know and I can get an epinephrine kit or two. Maybe I should get one even if no one thinks they are allergic just to be safe. Of course, the thought of me injecting you with a big needle/syringe/pen thing should be enough to get you out of any sort of shock you are experiencing… 🙂
Lindsey, in a week or two you probably want to create a new forum thread to get a final attendance count. I think we also did some coordination about who was bringing what equipment by email… Fu was the team leader last time so she may have some suggestions on how to handle this.
Congratulations Bob! I cached with you at the event where you hit 100, and that was just in late March of this year… so you are really knocking them down fast!

We have this nice new web site so how about creating a section on how to place and maintain a cache. Granted, people have to take the time to read it in the first place, but if it was done well, I think it would be a nice addition to help both new and “experienced” cachers alike.
Good idea Don. We already have a Wiki page named Hiding A Cache that lists some of the rules, regulations, and tips to be considered when hiding a cache. We brought this information over from the old website but we are currently in the process of revising it (mainly to address changes due to the new DNR rules). Note that we will also be adding a link to it from the Main Menu block in the upper left hand corner so it will be easier to find in the future.
Note that this Wiki page is currently locked, so it can only be edited by Board members and myself. If you have material you’d like to see added, just send it to me or a Board member, or we can create a second hiding a cache page with member contributed tips (maybe information on which types of containers hold up best, suggestions for swag items to put in a cache, etc.).

I fixed the Collectables cache this evening.
Dan, a big thanks for doing all this work to keep this great old cache alive! In its day, this was probably the toughest and most talked about multicache in the state. It would also qualify as a “quality newbie cache” for T&tB’s list as Sam (Yawningdog) placed this about 20 days after starting geocaching. (Of course in 2001 we were all really newbies…)
I was fortunate enough to find this one when there were still good swag items left (and the coordinates took you straight to the final ;))… I framed the “White House” print I took and it is still hanging in my home office.
Congratulations Ken…
Actually the PowerPoint file was not brought over to the new site, so the link above and in the blog was broken. This problem has been corrected. 🙄
I know the Board has considered creating some sort of file archive where people could share information, presentations, slides, handouts, etc. that they used when giving geocaching presentations and classes. With this sharing, others would not have to start from scratch and develop all their own material when giving these presentations or classes… and it would help ensure that a clear and consistent message gets conveyed to the general public by Wisconsin geocachers.
First, check to see that the Backup conduit in the Hotsync Manager is set to “handheld overwrites desktop”. You may have switched this to “desktop overwrites handheld” to get your apps and settings transfered to the new Tx.
If this is set properly….
How critical is the CacheMate information on your Palm? Can it be erased?
If you can live without it, I would remove CacheMate and the CacheMate database file from the Palm, and remove the database file from your PC. Put CacheMate (the program PRC file) back on the Palm, create a new database in CacheMate, and import some information.
With this fresh install, everything should be set to do a sync/backup the CacheMate database file.
Randy, I moved this topic to the “Help” forum.
Are you sure that CacheMate is actually synching… do you see something like “Synchronizing CacheMate” pop up on the Palm and/or PC? This would occur at the very end of the Hotsync.
If it is synching, you may be looking at the wrong file. Maybe you changed your device “name” or the CacheMate database name when moving to the Tx so the PDB file is now in a different place? Search for an alternate PDB file in the same general area (Program Files->Palm…). Or change something in CacheMate on the Palm, do a sync, and then search your entire hard drive for PDB files changed today and you should find it.
If it is not synching, check the settings for the Backup conduit in the HotSync manager. You might also want to delete the PDB file (save a copy somewhere), which should force the Backup conduit to grab it from the Palm.
Here is a link to a Groundspeak forum topic about the same subject… it sounds like you have already tried some of the stuff people have suggested.
