Need help getting a U.S. map on our profile page. I have the Jpeg file just need help after that. THANKS

If the image file is not on a web server already, you’ll have to get it on one. (If it already is, you can skip down to the part about finding the address and adding the tag.) The easiest way is to upload it to geocaching.com in your profile photo area.

    – Start editing your profile
    – Under “Your Photo” in the edit profile form, click “Choose Profile Image” or “change/edit”
    – On the page that appears click “upload a new image”
    – Upload the US map image file

Now you need is to figure out the URL (web address) for the image you just uploaded. Get back to the “Choose My Profile Photo” page. Find the thumbnail of the US Map image you just uploaded and right click on it. Go to Properties. You should see something under address that looks like this:

    http://img.geocaching.com/user/thumb/36e8cb80-5a5c-4646-9068-0f156974f559.jpg

Now you can add the appropriate HTML to your profile text (Latest News, Biography, Hobbies, etc.) to make the image appear there. Simply add an HTML tag, dropping the “thumb” portion of the address of the thumbnail, like this:

Hopefully you’re able to follow these directions… 🙂 If not feel free to PM me.

I saw that too. Just contact jeremy and he can move it……a assume he can 😉

    Link has been moved.

And if anyone else has any good/useful mapping links (and I’m sure many of you do), don’t hesitate to submit them.

If I were to do it over again I would have put some type of chaps over my waders as my waders got wrecked. The only thing is, the chaps may get wet. The only chaps I have are leather(for the bike) and I don’t like getting them wet.

Good idea Dan… I know you pretty much destroyed your waders and ended up with wet feet/legs at the end. (This is where the extra socks sealed in the vacuum pack bags came in handy. At first we laughed at Dan for doing this, but after the gear carried by most folks on the low road got wet, we were impressed when he pulled out a pair of dry socks.)

Those taking the high road should consider even more brush protection than chaps. By the end of July the thorns will be at their, er… thorniest. 🙂 I wore brush pants with Cordura panels for abrasion resistance. Jeans would be OK, but they’ll probably sustain some damage. I would also suggest carrying a heavy jacket (jean jacket?) and gloves for the really thick patches. Hopefully it isn’t 90 degrees and humid, as you’ll really be sweating in all this gear.

Again, I’ve got to stress the importance of trekking poles or a walking stick for those taking the high road. Getting up and down the steep slopes is a heck of lot easier when you have something to anchor yourself…

Not a biggie, but just wondered if it’s possible to change the “member since” date below avatars to reflect joining the WGA as opposed to the date you registered for the forum?

Bob, this goofiness results from the merge of WGA forum user accounts and WGA membership user accounts done during the website upgrade.

What is shown in the forums as the “Joined” date is the date your forum account was created on the old site. In your case, you registered for the forums years after you created your membership account (I think due to a name change).

Unless I hear major objections, I plan to make a change to show the earlier/older of the two dates (membership or forum registration) as the “Joined” date. In your case Bob, the Joined date would change to Aug 2003.

One that marks all areas as read wouldn’t hurt my feelings either.

I think we already have this feature. Click on the “Mark all forums read” link at the below the forum listings on the main forums page. Let me know if this isn’t the functionality that you wanted…

    A tiny forum issue…
It seems to me it would make sense that when one clicks the “mark all topics read” link on a forum, that it should then return back to the forum index.

Makes sense to me too Russ. You would still show the informational message “The topics for this forum have now been marked read”, then automatically redirect to the main forum page even if they don’t click anything, right?

In any case, it has been added to The List (of many things to do).

The actual breakdown of the registered users is (as of today):

    530 active WGA members
75 active WGA friends (made a post or registered for an event in the past year)
    652 inactive WGA members
    275 inactive WGA friends

1532 (does not add to ~1800, probably another bug :()

We have a lot of people who registered as WGA members but who never renewed their membership. Most of the inactive friends are people who registered for the message boards, made one or two posts, and then never returned.

At some point, hopefully a Board member or two (or any WGA member for that matter) will volunteer to clean up our membership list. There are many duplicate accounts, some that lack the necessary membership information, numerous so-called joint accounts, accounts with invalid email addresses (200+ at the last count), etc. We can delete user accounts so long as the person has not made a post in the forums… once a post has been made, the best we can do is to mark an account inactive to prevent it from being used again but it is still in our database.

I had four options when I submitted this but the last one “Bring it on, I’m there” seemed to get lost when I posted it…

At first I thought this was maybe because you forgot to hit “Add Option” for the last one. But when I tried to redo the poll, all I got was the three options too.

Max number of options configuration setting is set at 10 so this should not be an issue. Sounds like another bug for the list…

Hey, how do I go from being a “friend” to a member? 😕

You just have to provide the necessary membership information. Click on Your Account in the Main Menu box, then click on the Member Info tab. Fill out all the fields and hit update… your association status should change to WGA Member.

Send me a private message if you can’t get it to work…

I felt I needed to write to express my disappointment at your new rule requiring that someone be a member of WIGCA to vote for COTM – and, that to become a member, one must reside in the state.

Just to set the record straight, you now need to be logged in to vote for COTM, but not necessarily a WGA member. You can create a user account on the WGA website even if you are not eligible to be a WGA member or don’t want to provide the necessary membership information… all you need is a valid email address. These “WGA Friends” are allowed to post in the forums, vote for COTM, and almost everything else a full member can.

The reason for requiring someone to be logged in was to eliminate the COTM vote fraud we’ve seen in the past. This has only happened a couple times (once or twice a year) and usually it is easy to spot, but with the logged in user requirement the chance of serious fraud is a lot lower.

Only accepting votes from logged in users also allowed us to give people the ability to delete their votes and recast them, something that several members asked for.

If there is enough interest/negative feedback, we could switch back to the old way of doing things.

What a grand way to hit a grand Anne!

A somewhat related question… did the ladies attempt to break the record for the most caches found in a day? I know Anne and others mentioned that they might try to do this.

Sorry Ken, I forgot this is a family friendly site.

Actually, removing the cover was the first thing I did when the server arrived… there was no methodical setup, reading of manuals, checking of compatibility, (talking about feelings, foreplay ), etc. Of course I work with large numbers of “naked” electronics on a daily basis, so I guess I am kind of a geeky Hugh Hefner.

    Bump.

The new server has been delivered to Alan and Arn and will be installed in its posh new Lake Geneva home (in the laundromat closet ) by Thursday afternoon.

The current timing of switchover events this weekend looks like:

    – Old server will be taken offline sometime after 8pm on Friday
    – All data on the old server will be copied off it on Friday night
    – Data will be copied to the new server Saturday morning, the rest of the day will be spent prepping various features
    – New website will be available sometime late Saturday

We recently switched our DNS scheme… this change will allow everyone to access the new site almost immediately after it is ready. (The last time the server was moved, some people could not access the site for 1+ day because of DNS issues.) You will also see a “switchover in progress” message if you go to wi-geocaching.com on Saturday, and this is how we will post information on any delays/snags/etc. that may occur.

Here are a couple pictures of the new server. The most impressive thing about it is its 11 fans, which will hopefully keep it from melting down in its new home…

IMHO, I would rather not have a WGA logo based on the geocaching.com logo. What if they change their logo, does this mean we need to change ours? What if their logo starts including copyrighted elements like Signal the Frog (that we can’t use)?

Another question to ask is whether we want the logo to mean something to non-geocachers… I am not sure if this is important or not. The current logo may suck but it displays the three things needed for geocaching (public land, a GPS, a container). Would non-cachers understand what the four colors and the black X are for in a logo like the Maryland Geocaching logo?

There was a pretty big discussion on this topic on the new WGA website/forums between our beta testers… based on the informal poll we took, most (>70%) agreed that the logo should be changed/refreshed but other things (i.e. campout planning, etc.) were much more important and should be given priority over the logo change.

And here is a design that Bunny FuFu (Anne) came up with (hopefully she is OK with me posting it ):
