Wow, you are obviously really excited about this Anne… take a chill pill or something, as it is still two months away. (And are you sure you want to relive this experience? Remember the panic attack on the rocks? )
Anyway, I would also like to observe the team that goes after this one… not to give them any clues or anything, just to trail them and see what trouble they get in. I’m also trying to talk Piwko Kurczak into taking the challenge, and could probably take/drive another cacher or two from the Milwaukee area.
RE: Camping. Lorrie (Lil Otter) has offered to allow people to camp at her place which would be about 25 miles from The Gauntlet. Actually Mirror Lake, which is less than 5 miles from the cache, has a number of small group campsites (20 people max) that are also available for the weekend… this may be a good alternative if more than a handful of people want to camp.
So how many people want to find or refind The Gauntlet on the 22nd and camp Fri or Sat night?
Marc, I’m assuming you’re also going to have a traditional marker or gravestone in a cemetery somewhere?
If you don’t, how are those geocachers that are left supposed to place WCC 411 Here Lies Marc? Maybe we should have a whole series highlighting the resting places of famous WI cachers…

If you are going to be the central WI area Memorial Day weekend, you should consider taking Lil Otter up on her offer to hike to the Lone Rock cache (see the cache page for details). While this cache is not as tough as The Gauntlet, it is a nice long hike and climb up a “big rock in the middle of nowhere” that gives you a 360 degree view of the area.
I had thought about coming up for the hike/CITO to Lone Rock, but because of the WGA server switchover I can’t make it (maybe I could if it were on Monday…).

You can tell the tech guy that this is probably a web server configuration issue, and not a browser/Firefox issue. The server needs to be set up treat the .gpx files as the MIME type application/gpx (which will cause all browsers to pop up the open with/save as dialog), not serve them up as a regular text file. If he’s running Apache, he should add a line to /etc/mime.types…

If you are running CacheMate on your Palm, then yes, it is possible and I do it all the time. You can’t automatically make the logs on geocaching.com (unless you create a REALLY smart macro ), but in GSAK you can get a listing of the caches you marked as found in CacheMate, as well as have access to the find date/time and any log text you put in the Palm. From there, you can just right click on each cache, go to “Custom URL” and “Log cache”.
In GSAK, go to the File menu and click “Load CacheMate logs and finds”. If you click on the “Help” button on the dialog box that appears you’ll get some fairly complete instructions on how to do it.
Unfortunately there is an extra step required. After syncing you need to run a utility to create a GPX file from your CacheMate Palm database (CM2GPX). There is no GUI for this utility (it’s command line), and finding the right CacheMate database file can be pain if you have multiple ones. But I have a macro that automates the running of the CM2GPX utility and the import of the log data so it becomes just a one click operation.
Give it a shot and post back if you have any problems or questions. Once you see how it works and can do it manually, I can post or email you the macro to help automate the process.
As I guessed, it appears that the recent logs harvester script just got stuck. After restarting it, it has successfully grabbed new logs over the last hour. Thanks for the heads up guys.
I should mention that the recent logs feature will be “new and improved” on the new website… changes made include:
– Adaptive update intervals that should allow us to grab more logs / have less missed logs
– Out of state logs are grabbed for our members
– Recent logs available from member profile pages (shows recent logs for a particular member)
– Ability to filter/search the recent logs
– Some recent logs statistics… i.e. how many Wisconsin related logs have there been today, yesterday, over the past week…[This message has been edited by jvechinski (edited 04-25-2006).]
Oh! It look the process that performs the recent log updates has crashed or something. I don’t think anything has changed on gc.com that would mess up our harvester.
I will look into it tonight…

I don’t believe we have any control in the number of approvers for Wisconsin. That’s overseen by gc.com.
It is true that geocaching.com is ultimately in control of how many approvers there are and who they are. But if the WGA were to ask for another two approver spots, explaining that our current approvers are being swamped and approval times are getting long, it is likely that gc.com would add some more approvers for Wisconsin.
Asking people limit the number of caches they place in a certain time period and limit the total number of caches they own are good ideas, but even with these restrictions we will eventually reach a point where the number of hides will simply consume too much of the current 2 approvers’ time. And I’d rather lighten the load on the current approvers now rather than see them burn out and just quit (you guys are doing a great job and certainly don’t get enough thanks… we don’t want to lose you!).
Sounds like working on acquiring a couple new approver spots (wga3 and wga4? ) from geocaching.com, as well as recruiting, selecting, and training these folks should maybe be a topic of discussion for the Board following the campout…

Just a guess that it might mean that it is a film canister container? Otherwise it means that we’ll get so muddy we’ll need to stop for a bath before moving on to 201…
I’m seriously considering attending the school. After not caching for most of the winter I could definitely use a refresher.
Anyone in the Milwaukee area planning on going at a reasonable time (not 5am )? If so, let me know (jeremy at vechinski dot com) and we can car pool, otherwise I will be bringing the cycle.
Do we know if there is enough room (parking) for everyone at the listed meeting coords? If necessary some of us could meet someplace (in Lake Mills? or the Park and Ride at WI-26 and I-94?) prior to 9 and consolidate the group into fewer vehicles.

I thought that every time you hotsync, you create a full backup. If the battery looses everything including the OS, it will back up what was on the Palm at the last hotsync.
You are correct about the hotsync creating a backup. But if you are in the field (or say in the middle of Montana on a week long trip, right Anne ) and let your batteries go dead, having a backup on your computer is not going to be very helpful…
This is not a glitch or mystery Fu…
With the older Palms that use AAA batteries, as long as you change the batteries before they go completely dead you shouldn’t lose any data. If you manage to run the batteries down to almost nothing, you should get a message that pops up on the screen that says something like:
WARNING: Batteries low. Hotsync and replace batteries now to avoid losing data.
Also, there is a capacitor (think of it as a small temporary battery) inside the device that holds up memory when you take the AAAs out. You need to change the batteries quickly, or the capacitor will discharge and the memory will be erased. One of my Palm IIIs has the following friendly reminder on a bright red sticker on the battery cover:
IMPORTANT: Device may lose data if batteries are removed for more than a minute.
The latest generation Palms (Tungsten E2, T5, Tx, Treo 650) use internal flash memory for storing user data, which will retain the data indefinitely with no battery power.
Thanks for the heads up Jeff, the problem is corrected.
Actually, it was just one hour off (unless you moved east )… the server had to be rebooted Friday and apparently forgot we’re now under daylight savings time.
Would it be better/less confusing to split the list into the two segments, Beloit to Madison and Tomah to Minnesota? Don’t know if some people driving through only take one of the two segments. But the number of caches is small enough that it could probably be left together for now…
I also forgot to mention in my post in the previous topic that the correct spelling is ‘Travelers’ not ‘Travellers’. (Ken, why didn’t you catch this one? )

First, what a great set of bookmark lists! I really like all the comments you have added on how to get to the caches and how you grouped them by exit. This definitely will make things easier for folks not familiar with the Milwaukee and Madison metro areas.
Second, there will be a dedicated “section” on the new WGA website for bookmark lists. This was something that our beta testers (mostly marc_54140 ) pushed for, so it was added.
So, there is no really no need to put together a menu web page as you mentioned above (though you could if you wanted to). I have added your bookmark lists to the ones already on the new site, and I’ll be sending you a link so you can check it out.
