Yes, Sunday morning works fine for me. It sounds like you have a pretty good route planned out. I wouldn’t mind jumping on some county roads, especially through the Kettle Moraine.

I haven’t found ‘Lizard Breath’ yet. Plus Steve has his member’s only ‘Rebecca’s Cache’ in the same park.

Only 75 miles? You could always bring a rubber hose and siphon some gas out of my 5 gallon tank. Or just bring a rope and tow your cycle behind Steve’s GoldWing.

Good plan Steve. Cato Car Crash cache would make a good final destination… I’ve already found it, but I wouldn’t mind going again.

I’ve also hit most of the northern Kettle Moraine caches, but it’s still a great area to drive through.

Other caches we could hit on the way:
    – Lizard Breath (GC8185)
    – Rebecca’s Cache (GC817D)
    – Glacial Blue Cache (GC4818) (I’ve found this one)
    – Waubedonia Park Adventure (GC8346)
    – Calumet Cache (GC52F0)
    – any of the caches in Manitowoc
    – and some Lil Otter virtual caches (these are everywhere!)

Personally, I would rather only make a few stops for geocaches, instead of stopping every 10 miles.

I figure it would be about 200-250 miles round trip to Cato and back… the distance would depend on how many back roads we took. (The more the better, especially since the interstates will be nuts because of the holiday.) Is this distance OK with you Brian? And since you’ll be the ride captain on this trip, I’ll let you plan out the route and the caches we’ll hit.

Next question is, where and when do we want to meet on Sunday? (Or Saturday, since my plans to visit my sister fell through…)

in reply to: Cycle caching trip #1750156

I would be in if we would go Sunday… I’m not sure yet if I’ll be available Saturday. Caching would be nice, but we should try to pick caches that aren’t too hard and have decent parking areas (don’t want to get the bike dirty by driving on a muddy road). State fee areas would be OK, but I (and others that go) would probably have to pay the daily rate. I’ll let you be in charge of planning the route and caches we hit if we do go Brian… try to keep it under 300 or 400 miles.

Also, if we can’t round up enough people for this weekend, I would be game for going another weekend this fall.

I just updated the EasyGPS file and the maps linked to above with the corrected coordinates for “Easy As Pumpkin Pie”.

It turns out the “Easy As Pumpkin Pie” cache is almost right on top of Sam’s “They Only Come Out At Night” cache. (In fact, you can’t see the mark for “Easy As Pumpkin Pie” on the maps because they are so close.) But I think it is too late in the game to consider moving one of them… we have already delayed printing the cache sheets and the maps while we waited for the corrected coordinates. What do other people think?

Looks good CacheCows… you can see that the trail map isn’t 100% correct, because “Barely Legal” appears outside the park instead of on the boundary. You might get slightly better accuracy calibrating using known points (like the intersection of Hwy 83 and Cty. C, etc.).

Note the two caches above have the same longitude, W88 23.340′. Is this correct? It seems like an amazing coincidence… and I want to get it straight before printing the cache sheets.

The EasyGPS file and maps linked to above have been updated again… hopefully for the last time.

Ken, do you want to use the EasyGPS file I put together for downloading from your laptop to the GPS units? If so, could you (or someone else) double check the names and coordinates in this file…

I just updated the EasyGPS file, as well as the topo and aerial maps… refer to the links in a post I made above.

Finally got my cache moved away from Sam’s at the spring. Actually, I moved it Wednesday night, but on the way home decided where I put it was too far away from the others and it would be pretty tough to find. So I went out this morning and rehid it again in a location that’s easier to get to.

I noticed that some of the temporary cache posts don’t have difficulty and terrain ratings. If the cache(s) you hid don’t have difficulty and terrain ratings listed, please edit your post to include them. (Otherwise, I’ll assume that you want them listed on the cache sheet as Difficulty: ?, Terrain: ?.)

I got my temporary caches hidden today. I chose to hide mine on the other side of County C… I just hope people will decide to make the journey out to my caches because right now they are pretty isolated.

Also, I updated the maps and EasyGPS files that are linked to by a previous posting.

I uploaded a couple maps that show the locations of the caches that have been placed so far, along with an EasyGPS file. I can keep the maps updated if people find them useful (or I wouldn’t mind passing this duty to the CacheCows).

Click the links below to see the maps and download the EasyGPS file…

I’ve just placed the first geocache in Richland County. Richland Center Towers takes you up a hill that overlooks the city of Richland Center.

I’ve also scouted a possible cache location in Pepin County and hopefully I’ll be able to place a cache there in September. We’re getting closer to our goal…

in reply to: Contacting the DNR #1750016

I’m with Brian… the picnic would be a good place to hold an informal meeting to get the opinion of a large number of cachers. More meetings may be needed in the future to hammer out the details of a proposed DNR policy, but we should get input from as many people as possible before worrying about the details.

I also think that any meeting should wait until after caching has ended (say 5:30pm or 6pm). Trying to hold a meeting while people are eating isn’t going to work well, and of course we don’t want to decrease the time we have for caching.

Yes, I can give my other container to Ken, but you forgot about Sam. I guess he can get the “Curves Ahead” cache after I retrieve it from Governor Dodge (assuming it is still there).
