WTG! 😀
Congrats on #2500 at a COTM cache! 😀
WTG! (insert smilie)
Welcome home! 😀
Welcome! You never know when a WGA member is hanging out here! 😉
I do recall my youth coaching days. I ususally responded with 1 of 2 things… “I know”, or “I don’t know”. Parents need to be treated like kids sometimes!
When my kids were old enough to start playing sports, I stopped coaching to enjoy watching them. If they complained, I told them to play with their head, hands, and feet;not their mouth. If they still whined, I asked them if they would rather be a player or a coach?Milk it or park it, kid! 😉
Yes. 😕
Enough said. The page would time out if I started typing!
My only complaint was that is was too warm outside for early February! 😉
Other than that…
Great job, Rob & Karen! 😀
Sorry for the way you feel on some of your points, Shane.
If I am asked to TAKE CHARGE of a WGA Event, I will decline. It means I’m expected to do almost everything. That deos not fit the definition of a BOD, in my opinion.
If I’m asked to ORGANIZE a WGA Event, that is a whole different matter! Now I get to ask questions of, and apply the talents of, the member volunteers. I get to organize the resources ahead of time, exchange info with the committee members for this Event, and expect MYSELF to say “Thank you” to them, since I can’t control what others say.
The whole point of ORGANIZING an Event is to make sure it can function IF I CANNOT ATTEND! Family emergencies, health problems, accidents…you name it! These are more important than attending an Event. If the Event cannot take place because I’m not there, I did a pretty poor job. And I most definitely don’t deserve thanks.I believe that in the infancy of the WGA, the BODs DID take on alot of the responsibilities of WGA Events. The templates are set; the membership has grown. It’s time for the Board to expect it’s membership to run it’s Association, with the support of the elected BODs as mentors and advisors.
I sense that a shift IS coming in the BOD responsibilities. It will be more of a financial decision group, as well as an ethics determining body. In the last few years, the talents that have shown up in the sub-committees have exhibited to the BOD that they can TRUST the Membership to do the job that they have volunteered for.
And to those members that have given of your time and talent on those committees…
THANK YOU!!
Thank you! I didn’t know that Law Enforcement Agencies were entitled to a free Premium Membership! I may need to print and distribute a few locally.
Thanks again, Knowschad! 😀
I remember asking a similar question to the nominees a year ago, wondering if the Favorites system would affect the COTM! The new guidelines had just been put into place, so giving it a go seemed logical.
Some of the membership HAS lost interest in the COTM run by the WGA. That is obvious from a few last minute nominations that get 1 or 2 votes, and it is the only cache nominated in a geograhic area! I should know…I nominated one with 2 days left in a month!
But COTM did what it was supposed to do. It solved the problem of “skewed” results. It is a fair system for Wisconsin cachers. We just need a way to better educate cachers on implementing the winners list into something useful. It is easier to look at the number of Favorite Points on a cache page than to scroll down to see if it is a COTM winner.
The best thing to do would be to post a member survey in the Forums to get input from the membership. We are still a young association, and trial and error should be expected!
Thanks,Cat! Nice spot on the news! 😀
Good Luck, Rick! I voted every day since being asked.
(your last name is Steele, right?) 😯
A Meet ‘n’ Greet is probably designed as a meeting for a few hours, not a weekend. But a geocaching ‘conference’ or ‘convention’ would provide workshops and vendors, for education and expansion of knowledge. I rolled that idea around in my head, as other Associations I belong to have a State Convention each year. They have dwindled in attendance with internet access and the price of fuel!
You must have something in mind, John. Why don’t you tell us your idea, and we can reflect on it…then comment.
Finding a tough cache is a great award in itself! 😀
I’m not sure about promoting it more, but expanding it would be good.
The CITO is a service that the geocaching people do to give back to the community. Along with the Adopt-A-Highway CITO in spring and fall, it would be good to have smaller, more local CITOs, too. We’ve all encountered messy areas while caching, to the point where you could pick up a bag full of junk and no one would notice!
If there could be a uniform list of guidelines for a CITO host to follow, more areas could be cleaned on a given day, showing the DNR, law enforcement, and other powers that the WGA is a responsible group of hobbyists.I actually prefer the Adopt-A-Highway method of CITO… pick up trash until your done and head out, either caching or to some other project. Having combined CITO/meal/prize Events seem like dangling a carrot in front of a donkey. It may get more cachers there, but the community service should be the main draw. I do like the idea of a CITO the day before or the morning of a WGA Event, like the Picnic or Camping.
The uniform guidelines for a CITO Event would be the support that the WGA gives. Cachers could submit to the WGA some “trashy areas” for cleaning up (similar to the COTM nominations) in various areas of the state. The WGA could contact a local cacher in a given area to preview the spot and estimate the size of the “problem”. A small park or trail may need 5-10 people, while a State Park may need 30.
But a larger list of smaller areas shows the outside world that geocaching IS a statewide group that provides a service in their local community, not just Hwy. 10 and a few parks in the larger cities.
Lab Rat covered it pretty good. If it’s your first Event, look at past Event cache pages and get ideas from that. See what works!
Make sure to list the time/date twice in the text, for those that skim the page. We’ve done an Event by ourselves, placing 35 permanent caches. That took 8 weeks, so your 4 week scenario would require help, so I would co-host the Event. We also planned the LCG Event last year, and previewed the facilities so we could put them to their greatest use.
And I wouldn’t be afraid to cancel an Event for lack of response. To put days and hours into an Event for a small group would be frustrating! I’ve noticed very little response on 101 classes, but that is to be expected. Most members don’t need the class. Hopefully these classes are advertised elsewhere so John Q. Public can get educated on the fun. -
