WTG on 6K! 8)
Another milestone was caching in February in T-shirt weather! 😀
Looks great! Made me smile! 😀
WTG! (Is that cache still active!) 😀
And treated seed corn is mainly to deter insects in the ground, not a sandhill crane pulling a small corn sprout out of the ground! But they will walk right down a corn row, pulling out sprouts one after another.
We came across a pair of sandhill cranes in the middle of the road once. Their baby had decided to “nest” on the warm road! They would not move until the chick finally got up and staggered into the ditch. I respected the protective nature of the parents and patiently waited out the situation.
I believe Texas has had open season on them for quite awhile.
I enjoyed the Whooping Crane incident, too! They can’t get them to continue flying from Alabama to Florida for the winter. They had them trained to follow an ultralight. So they’re going to crate them up and ship them by truck?! 😯
Maybe Alabama is where they would have naturally stopped! The pelicans came back to the Horicon Marsh without an invitation, ya know!
😕
Many thanks to the WGA President for his comments in the article appearing in the Fond du Lac Reporter (fdlreporter.com). Sheriff Nehls then posted a ‘thank you’ for the info!
Good job, Pete! 😀
First of all, I was not on any of the WGA Committees, although 3 years ago, I reintroduced the idea of sub-committees in the Forums, to alleviate the burden of the BOD doing everything, and getting all the blame if something went wrong! By delegating some of the organizational responsibilities to member volunteers, it did lighten the load, and shifted some responsibility to the membership. This also prepares members for future leadership roles in the association.
As far as participation last year:
Organized and co-hosted the Cachers and Cattails WGA LCG Event at the Int’l Center in Horicon, along with Sagasu (with 2 WGA Events being held there in February, I get a little warm and fuzzy about that!).
WGA Spring Adopt-A-Highway CITO
WGA Appleton CITO Potluck(arrived late for the meal…sorry)
Co-hosted CacheVenture Meet ‘N’ Greet during EAA at Oshkosh
West Bend Cache Ba$h attendee on Friday
WGA Fall Adopt-A-Highway CITOI also made a presentation on Geocaching to the Fond du Lac Elks Club, a presentation on Geocaching at the Int’l Visitor Center in Horicon, hid temp caches for a local 4-H club for their June meeting at Hobbs Woods, and hid temp caches on the Laconia High School grounds as part of a Science Class project.
I was also the featured geocacher on the front page of the May 8, 2011 Action Sunday paper, which was distributed to 1700 households in the area.
All of these things were fun in different ways, and I look forward to continuing to educate the community, whether elected or not.
Hey! A new caching neighbor! Drove through Fondy this morning to grab a cache on the east side!
If I would have known, I would have beeped the horn all the way through town! 😀I’m west of Fond du Lac, in Rosendale (don’t speed here!). With the 2 Events over in Horicon, you can meet a bunch of cachers, if your so inclined!
Welcome to the WGA and Wisconsin! 8)
+1001!! 😀
Up by 198.
Looks like our incumbants covered the answer quite well!
I would add that I cached at the West Bend Cash Bash for the first 2 years, using the stamps and game card. The several hundred cachers were most definitely leaving more than a trace! So I cached on the way there Friday afternoon, only grabbing a few (7) before registering at the Mega Event booth. Geotrails are disturbing to me, and a reason why I occassionally move a hide or Archive it, speaking as a cache owner. Adding this point at 101 sessions may help, but it is getting a bit crowded in places!

Yes, HCH, I was waiting for that question!
I belong to 2 other Associations. One is extremely active up north, because it involves snow. Therefore, more northern Wisconsin members. The other Association is statewide, and is based on agriculture, so there is more membership base in the central and southern part of the state.
Both Associations are extremely active; one in winter and one the year round. Both associations fluctuate on membership, irregardless of promotional efforts on Membership committees or “membership drives”.
We see the most growth spurts through one-to-one contacts. Both groups continue to thrive and have been around awhile. The ag-based group for over 100 years; the snow-based group for about 45 years.Although these 2 groups vary immensely, they have one thing in common: MEMBERSHIP FEES! They both produce a hardcopy publication to keep members informed, as well as a website for the surfing members.
And both groups operate on a state and district level, as the needs are varied in different parts of the state, along with varying population bases. They have district events and State events.
And each county/district is responsible for their own memberships! The state body monitors the membership of each area and helps with late membership enrollments.
Bottom line: Geocachers, in their goegraphic areas, should be responsible for promoting membership in their geographic area, supported by the WGA and it’s website! (There is a Membership Committee that still tosses around ideas)
The membership, not the BOD, is the best media for membership growth, whether it’s the fantastic woods of the north or the urban areas of SE Wisconsin. Each area promotes itself with great geocaches and soon-to-be active members.
As long as this is a non-fee paying Association, their needs to be promotion for membership by the members from within, as well as continued promotion of the WGA website for state info.
Once we have more members in the “Nether Regions” of Wisconsin, I would get them involved by asking them for input on caching in their geographic area. And they can say “YES” or “NO” as to the level of involvement that they are comfortable with.
Congrats on joining an elite group of cachers; THE 10K KLUB!! Seems only a short time ago that you logged “Walk With Angels” as 5K. Hope to get that many someday waaaaaaaay in the future. 😀
Actually, I’ve noticed members trying to “localize” their specific geographic areas into sub-associations or independent caching associations. Nothing wrong with that, unless there is a new set of guidelines/rules that run independently from the Groundspeak norms.
By districting the state, each area will have representation on the State BODs, while working independently in their own areas. If the state were divided into, say, 4 districts, there could be 2 reps from each district, plus 2 at-large reps, with the president voting in case of a tie from abstention/absence of a rep. Various committees can be formed in each district, as well as State committees, for various Events and projects, as deemed necessary by the BOD.I’m sure there are many other ideas and details to iron out, and no one is saying it should happen. But it should be discussed.
