Miniature marshmallows! 😉
Watch out for frozen quicksand! 😯
I think Super 8 in Washburn has a supper club/bar affiliated with it called The Steak Pit. Hugo’s Pizza has a hub in Washburn, too. And it is about 15 minutes closer to GZ. Just hop on Hwy. C and meander up to the Superior shoreline. There is a small coffee shop at Port Wing, I think, for a warm up afterward. Not sure of their hours of operation, especially in winter.
The Twin Falls Cache is fairly close, too. But take the lower trail! The downfall for Washburn is that anyone NOT going to the cache would want to drive to Ashland, as there isn’t much to do in Washburn!
Heck, while your up there, you might as well drive on the ice road to Madeline Island! Alot cheaper than the ferry in the summer!
Found it in the first place I looked! Did NOT SL! TFTVC! 😀
Congrats on 1K! 😀
There are different motels for different budgets, including a couple ma and pa places for pretty cheap. Best Western is closest for heading out to the great north shore, and has an eating establishment with it. Super 8 might have continental breakfast, as well as AmericInn.
The AmericInn is on the east side of town, and they did add some water features a few years ago. The Best Western is on the west side of town, right on Lake Superior. It has a restaurant attached to it.
Hugo’s Pizza is located in Ashland and would have room for a group of cachers. It’s closer to the Best Western.
For those that stay behind, the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is very interesting, and the Timeless Timber Gift and Wood shop are great places to visit. For Morgan Falls and St. Peters Dome, there is a $5 fee for access to the parking lot. It was quite a hike in the fall to the Dome, without snow, but the falls would be a nice secondary trek.
Glad to share info, but can’t make the trip. I’ve worked in the area 6 times a year until 2009, so caching and exploring the area the last 12 years has been fun!
We only played the LCG for the last 2 monthes of 2008, and that was good practice for ’09!
Attending the LCG Event in January was a real treat, and brought cachers in from around the state, inspite of the snow.
Our favorite of the bunch was “Message in a Bottle” (GCN156). It took a few trips and a little hunting, but finding the old “bottle” was fun.
Completing 15 Cache Rescues on the year helped keep the geotrash out of Mother Nature’s backyard. Who needs to buy containers when you can get free ones from old geobeacons?!
The best LCG day was Black Friday, when the Jim half headed to Zumaland, and found 22 of 25 Lonely Caches, while dodging deer hunters. Left at 4AM and got home at 7PM, tired, but satisfied.
Looking forward to the ’09 Event in the Dells. Hope to see a bunch of you there! 😀Walking in a Winter Wonderland for 2K…SWEET!
CONGRATS!! 😀
I’ve grabbed a few at Pick ‘n Save that are watertight lock ‘n locks. The fam supplies us with plenty of pill bottles!
Congrats on 1.6K! 😀
Darn… 😥
Congrats on a “lonely”year! 😀
Both Waushburn and Ashland have a Super 8. Best Western in Ashland, too.
You could nab those crazy caches on the Ashland breakwater, too, if you stayed overnight.Hooray for 3K!! 😀
