I found 28 of the event caches, short of my goal of 31, but still better than last year. I would have found a lot more if I had someone to navigate…not wanting to cause an accident, I would read my map before heading out, and then miss my turn or find a traffic issue I would want to avoid, and then change course and go for another cache…I wasted a good hour either not knowing where I was going and pulling over, or even passing the cache and having to turn around. Just a personal frustration having nothing to do with the event itself. The Ba$h was well organized and I enjoyed the caches I found and meeting other cachers from around the state and a few from Illinois. I plan to attend next year.

I take it that you don’t have a road GPS like a Nuvi.

I would like to shake the hand of the inventor of the Nuvi. Mine made it at least a hundred times easier for the weekend.

That’s why I’m posting, because I want to check before I tell people about it

I went for overall numbers. If there was an event cache close by, we went for it. We ended up with 18 and one DNF of one, 0917 Stick”y”. Overall I ended up with 69 for the day.

Stick-y was though! We didn’t find it but the people we were with found it.

If the compass on your GPS unit is electronic, you have to calibrate it every time you change the batteries. I also found that there is a bit of a learning curve with an electronic compass when I switched from one GPS to another. It’s really about getting experience finding caches with a particular unit and compass.

There are lots of tips and tricks you can learn from other geocachers by spending some time with them and playing around with all the gadgets and programs out there.

As the others mention, a great opportunity to do so is at an event.

Oh I will be getting tips for sure, can’t wait! Any idea how I calibrate my compass?

I think LDove means the compass screen. I’m not too familiar with your GPS, but I bet you’ll find it easier to use that screen. I’m sure someone can give you more pointers on that.

I understand that he means the compass on my GPS, what I’m saying is that whenever I try to use it I’m either using it wrong or its inaccurate.

If I don’t hit 50 before the bash then I will hit it then.

I enjoyed watching it! I think you walked through poison ivy around 2:13 though – 😯 I would also comment that you may find it easier to find the caches if you use your compass on your GPS. When you were scrolling through looking for accuracy, I thought I saw one on your GPS. If the compass screen is up, the arrow should just point to which way you need to walk and count down footage as well. It was hard to tell, but the screen you looked like you were using was possibly for tracking? ❓ Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I do have a compass but I think it’s inaccurate

Well you’re not going to be throwing the glass jar around are you? Glass has a lot of pros going for it. It’s waterproof, doesn’t rust and, unless you are stupid with it, it’s quite sturdy.

Logically (from my perspective) is that as more caches are added each day more are archived each day until it balances out at a number that may or may not be over 1,000,000

Thanks to all for their input. It was very informative. I have decided to release my first trackable, a Brett Favre Travel Bug Coin. It’ll be interesting to watch and see how it moves.

    Its number is: TB2RR42

Keep it for a couple of years, then give it to me for a year, then talk about giving it to someone all your friends hate then change your mind.

OK. I talked to the guy who started this (I forgot the name 😳 ) I’m going to be hiding a Saga of Seven Suns themed cache in Luxemburg.

I was also thinking that a cache themed after Rush’s 2112 album would be pretty sweet.

How would this work exactly? I love the book series The Saga of Seven Suns. I would be willing to do something themed around that.

Always. Could have clues to finding it. Finding caches faster means you can find more in a day which is more fun 😀
