    Honors to co-first finders:
    CatHunter
    Waukesha Wizards

    I am glad thats over.

I must also mention that in our group, Uncle_Fun interpreted all of the clues and devined the general location, but the coordinates told all.

My best guess was off by 6 miles: AKA ‘The Great Pumpkin’.

But I still get a hat.
Please check the ‘For Sale’ board: new item to appear shortly.

I use WAAS this way: When I can’t find a cache I walk thru the menus of my GPSr to turn on WAAS. By the time I get it turned on, both I and the GPSr are ‘settled down’ enough to renew the search. For me, WAAS is strictly a placebo.

Quoted in the article were newcomers Stacey and Geoff Thieme of Cudahy.

There are technology geeks and retirees and hunters.

    I am not a retiree…
    I am not a hunter….
    That must mean … I’m … a … geek.
    Why didn’t someone tell me!

in reply to: Methamphetamine Info for Geocachers #1749487

I read this and appreciate the common sense. But…

    1. Has this been a problem in Wisconsin? Have there been incidents?

    2. I thought the state legislature fixed this by requiring a photo id and a runny nose before you can buy sudafed.

    3. While at the Stonehaven outing, Genius Loci(Joe) was a member of our group. We had to reach into a spot where we could not see. Joe pulled out a rubber glove suitable for a cavity search.

We laughed. Then mentally I made a note to buy a box.

in reply to: Other GPS games? #1749473

    Here’s one:

Stand in an open field with plenty of room, like the fifty yard line of a football field.
    Turn on your GPSr.
Create a waypoint where you are.
Set your GPSr to ‘goto’ that waypoint.
Move to be always at ground zero.
Continue chasing ground zero until you get bored or have a heart attack.

    Enjoy.

Note that this was not my creation but one of the games proposed at the same time as geocaching after the elimination of SA in May 2000.

When Heinz ketchup leaves the bottle, it travels at a rate of 25 miles per year

To put that in useful units:
    8 furlongs per fortnight.

    Randy,
Are the files mentioned here available and up to date and usable by the likes of me? I plan to do some WI travels.

Now the dream can be realized, a cordless battery charger.

    Inquiring minds want to know:
    1. Who is filming? If the person is a mental health professional then I understand the need for privacy.
    2. ummmmm…. Why?
    3. Who pushed who?
    4. Did you expect people to do this at Devil’s Lake Revisited when they find your cache?

in reply to: WGA Campout – WGA Picnic “clinics” #1758483

I would participate but I would suggest that a virtual clinic is already in place. This stuff is part of the normal conversation at any event. Just recently, I was involved in such discussions at Stone-haven and the Oriental Breakfast. One can also post a message on the HELP board and you’ll get lots of answers.

The knowledge is also dispersed. For example I don’t use a Palm, I use a Pocket PC so I can’t help with a Palm device but can share info on GSAK. Others are experts on GSAK macros, spinner, and the PDA resident tools.

Any specific get together to spread the info would involve many experts and many novices, with everybody falling into both categories. But the first responsibility for novices is to get a start. Start doing pocket queries. YOU DO NOT NEED A PDA to use pocket queries. You need a GPS and cable to begin using them and GSAK or Spinner etc. Later you can always get a PDA after you see what others use.

You can take advantage of the toys incrementally. 2 weeks ago I posted a suggestion for GSAK on the geocaching.com boards. Turns out, the feature has been in GSAK for at least a year, I just never noticed it. You never stop learning.

Fine, when can you come over?

Better yet, let’s have old fashioned ‘sticker wash’ at the campout.

I’ll apply the Tie Technique this afternoon.

The board does not ‘manage’ geocaching in Wisconsin; they are the board of the WGA, an organization with positive goals with respect to caching in Wisconsin, but not control of it.

The opinion of the individuals on the board are no less or more important than any other geocacher.

To suggest there is a collective board opinion would also be wrong. Geocaching is too many different things to too many different people to come up with a ‘rule for every occasion’.

In short, the purpose of the WGA is to facilitate, communicate and sometimes provide gentle persuasion, but not to dictate. If the later was true, I’d be the first to lead a revolt.
