When I was a partner in a small business our lawyer told us several things not to do in order to prevent lawsuits. Among them:

    -Don’t sponsor a softball team.
-Don’t be in a room alone with small children.

It is a question of where the money is. Guilt or responsibility has nothing to do with it.

Legal action is probably the largest tax in the US, not for the awarded amounts but for what activities, inventions, and endeavors the potential lawsuit prevents.

ExpertGPS advertises that they can do .csv files. I have no first hand experience but a lot of people love it. They say it’s worth the shareware price. They have (or had) a 1 month free trial.

    Data would flow
    from Excel,
    to ExpertGPS,
    to GPSr -or-
    it could could flow from
    Excel to ExpertGPS,
to common waypoint formats that Mapsource could load (.GPX) files.

Everything you’d want to know about the episode w/pics…

in reply to: Policy update – What questions do YOU have #1750115

I’d like to make a non–specific response to wzbt03’s recent post:

One of the creepiest episodes of the old Twilight Zone series was the story of a small town, where a child named Timmy lived. Timmy had the power to make disappear, in horrible ways, those who didn’t think ‘happy thoughts’. The town survived by patronizing Timmy. Most of the episode was about the angst among the adults who said it wasn’t right, but it was all irrelevant, because Timmy had the power.

In another town, called WGA, there is another child, named unmmm……. DNRy.
DNRy also needed to be patronized. Everything the people of WGA did, from the meetings with DNRy, to incorporation, to registration forms are the equivalent of ‘happy thoughts’, knowing that DNRy could make caches disappear in an instant. Lots of angst about if it was right, but it was all irrelevant because DNRy had the power.

I’m still spending time finalizing our relationship with the IRS because of the incorporation needed for the DNR.

In another town there, was a little girl named IRSy …

in reply to: Wisc. DNR Webview #1748514

I’ve been trying to use this site to build a database of State Natural Areas, places where caches are not allowed but are tiny and often adjacent to legitimate areas. This would be useful to the cache approvers as well as cache hiders to test their coordinates.

I contacted the DNR last year and they said the data would be available in electronic form ‘later’. This site now has the data we need and has the ability to export the data as ESRI shapefiles, a standard representation of map and blueprint type data.

Now all I need is an application (free) that can convert the shapefiles to latitude and longitude data. The rest would be easy.

    Bobcat,

As an expert in searching for what you seek (I’ve been looking for one for more than 40 years) I can lend a hand.

To state my credentials further, you’ll notice I signed up with geocaching.com on Feb 14th (Valentine’s day).

I’ve even been awarded a medal for “looking for love in all the wrong places” by the WGA vice President (Rhonda of WISearchers) at last years campout.

We had this in Wisconsin a few years back,

You had to go onto to your hands and knees in a male changing room at a beach (at Long Lake?) to find a waypoint. Of course, the radius of search put you places nobody wants to be. There were several emphatic logs, from males and females who searched for it that that would be the last of that.

As to the greater issue, IMHO, specific geocaching gatherings should be accepted as much as they are accepted outside geocaching. For example, a ‘whites only’ outing should/could/would not be tolerated. Gender specific associations (clubs, schools) exist for specific reasons in greater society and those reasons may justify a gender specific cache outing.

Actually, it frees me up to do some synchronized swimming. I’ll still be as active a cacher, volunteer and WGA member as ever.

Sorry, no red state versus blue state maps but just some that show summary data from the election.

Our webmasters have built a very solid system for collecting the nominations and processing the vote. The system makes these items possible.

First, where the votes came from:
The number indicates the quantity of votes from that zip. It was not unusual that people voted for less than 5 candidates, hence the non-nickel numbers.

    .
    .
    .
Second, the same map with the killer B’s added. The B indicates the rough location where the board members live. If I missed, they’ll just have to move to make the map correct.
    .
    .
    .
Finally, a chart that shows on what days the votes were cast. You can see that of the 368 votes, 300 were cast in the first few days.

    Simple demographics:

Total number of members who have nominated: 24
    Total number of nominations: 82

Total number of members who have voted: 82
    Total number of votes: 368

(Yes some voted for less than 5 people)

As to the map, thats a Tuesday afternoon project because I got a loonnngg class tonight. But it can be done.

That’s bothering me too. Looking at Jeremys attempts, I’m afraid his techniques might miss because an ‘offset’ is added at the last minute to change the value.

In other words, one encryption on top of another. So you need to know the key phrase and the magnitude of the offset. And does the offset change with each character?

    Other assumptions:
    English,
meant to be read top to bottom,
    left to right…

    Curse you CatHunter

I had plans for last night and this got in the way. The whole thing is the key phrase. I used the cachemaster’s son’s name (how cliche) etc. but nothing popped up. Below is a snapshot of the spreadsheet I built.

    I’m going to bed.
