    You haven’t cached until you experience a no find but still find reasons that you’re glad you came.

    I’m brining the turkey this year, and in the process of moving the almost 40-pound bucket from the kitchen out to the garage, I may have torn my rotator cuff.

    I have a friend who advocates using Coke (the cola) for the brine. The torn rotator cuff is a new twist on the recipe tho.

    I ain’t goin’ shoppin’ tomorrow, I’m goin’ cachin’ where deer hunters ain’t huntin’. Assummin’ it ain’t rainin’.

    Happy Thanksgivin’

    Oh that’s how it’s done. Before, I was impressed by its apparent complexity. Now I’m impressed by its actual simplicity.

    Yes.

    1. Spinner creates output to a directory. Whether thats on a PDA or on a networked laptop or desktop, it doesn’t care.

    2. Spinner allows you to massage the waypoint name to be more useful. On my GPS V, the waypoint name tells me the GC number, the type (multi vs event etc) and the difficulty.

    On my GPS 12 (with 6 char waypoints) it tells me GC number and difficulty.

    You have just scratched the surface on spinner. Change the templates to get just the stuff you want in the right places.

    I would find it useful even if I didn’t own a PDA.
    I’m using an old Pocket PC: Journada 548

    I started and finished this series this afternoon. Fantastic.

    I’ll quote my log for the final cache of the five:
    ===============================================

    What makes a great cache?
    1. An interesting location
    2. A great hide
    3. An interesting theme/write-up
    4. I can find it.

    Any one of these is sufficient. Combine several of these characteristics in one cache and you are a master cache-eteer. Create five caches, all linked to each other that have all these characteristics and you are now a grand master cache-meister.

    I am reduced to using my Tupperware for food storage as any cache I do from now on can not achieve the success of this series. Well done.

    No! No! No!

    Gomer Pyle USMC (television show of the 60s). He used to say “the phrase” whenever he found something.

    My grandfather told me about it.

    I use it regularly, if not frequently.

    1. Takes GPX files, the “lingua franca” of geocaching data. So… it can show you the distribution of caches in you pocket files from geocaching.com or any .gpx or .loc file.

    2. The maps you can choose are from a wide variety, from politcal to topo to aerial photo.

    3. If you are producing maps, lots of options to hide or highlight features not available from Mapsource.

    4. Fast and adjustable, you can massage your final result to your needs, including larger than “sceen size”.

    No it dosen’t do or pay my taxes but it is on my favorites list and I find it more useful than mapsource (which doesn’t take GPX files).

    Trip Report
    ============
    I think the mass cache hide went very well. The individual hiders were able to compare notes and techniques and a nice distribution of caches from a variety of people was the result.

    Lotsa great social “fallout” from a pleasant afternoon.

    Thanks for all the suggestions. But due to the rookie’s illness and some thunderstorms, I ended up caching solo in the Appleton area as opposed to doing a duet in Green Bay.

    I made a mental note of all the suggestions. Summer aint over yet.

    Just to be sure, we are talking about a line in the -GPS Spinner.ini- file in your spinner directory.

    Your line looks like:
    Waypoint_Format = GC%I

    I would expect all your names to now be GCxxxx, regardless of type, just like online.

    As another example mine looks like:
    Waypoint_Format = %I-%N-%d%t

    I’ll be there.

    in reply to: Spinner trouble? #1739538

    Taint broke, its a feature. Spinner is so powerful it can saw your arm off.
    The MC, VC etc represent Multiples, Virtuals etc. This is all setup in the spinner.ini file. It gets a little thick but change that file to change the behavior.

    An example waypoint on my GPS, thanks to spinner, is MC-FFFF-22 where I can see its a multiple, the ID and its difficulties at a glance. I would be using spinner even if I didnt use a PDA.
