This has the relevant Tiger files

The ascii ones are at the bottom. The numbers are in dd.dddddd coordinate format.

I find the program interesting because of what it tells me about me .

One surprise was that I had found a cache in Utah. The Utah cache is actually a traveling cache that is currently in Utah (“Going to a Brewers Game Traveling Cache”). I found it when it was in Germantown.

When did you say you’d have the upgrade that lists totals for Wisconsin counties?

I actually considered this, and spent maybe a grand total of 5 minutes looking for a public domain file containing coordinates/vectors/line segments or whatever for county borders. Not even sure if such a thing exists, but if someone knows of one, let me know and I’ll look into it.

My first thought is to use the Tiger database built by the US government which has rivers, cities, parks and yada yada and political boundaries as line segments.

Some pictures of the well done Saturday evening Geocaching Intro class at Bong. Lotsa work by Tie and aided by Deejay (David).

Tie and Brad (Team Sean Connery) hiding the temps with the photog and reporter from the Kenosha paper. The Racine newspaper was also represented.

    On to the next…

    The briefing…

…covers the attractions and technical aspects of geocaching.

There are caches out there… scramble

TS’s universal download box gets to go everywhere.

Bong’s mascot and trademark — we learned later that they manufacture them underground in the abandoned Air Force base with alien help. But maybe I’m confusing the stories.

And how are the tics (Bong has a rep)?

Maybe I missed it but when?

I have it on good authority that the new reviewer wanted a name that said ‘Wisconsin’ and nothing says Wis-consin like cheese. Ironically, I don’t know if there is actual cheese in cheese-whiz. Other names considered were

      Brian
      Not Brian (suggested by Seattle)
      Wi-Cheddar

In the past the new reviewer has said publicly, privately and in his sleep that he would/could never be a reviewer. He looks with admiration at the two Brians (GrouseTales and Tie) and doubted he could match their dedication and patience.

The new reviewer needed a lot of convincing (a sack full of door-knobs was threatened) before finally accepting the job. He apologizes in advance for his learning curve. But, in the spirit of the new website (expressed in Jeremy’s mission statement) I hope that I can play a role in keeping geocaching in Wisconsin as good as it can be if not the best anywhere.

Just looking at the pictures you can tell that the server is made just for us.

    The server:
    • Has a WGA sticker.
    • Has several forms of CACHE.
    • Has MULTIPLE MICRO processors.
    • Will employ VIRTUAL memory.
    • Uses NANO technology.
    • Is a box with lots of stuff in it.
    • Will be BENCHMARKed to measure its performance
    • Is obviously a TRADE-UP.

Let’s hope that Jeremy doesn’t run into any MYSTERYs (?) or BUGS this weekend.

Good luck and we’ll see y’all on the far side.

Nashville is often cited as the first city where caches were created just to generate numbers. Mindless, repetitive hides that offer no reason to get out of the car other than to sign a log.

To be sure, Nashville has much to offer in terms of history and hills, but its swamped under parking lot hides etc.

Sort of a Gresham’s Law for geocaching.

None other than GSAK on the PC.
GSAK generates HTML files that are auto-synched onto the PDA and the browser of the PDA is used to view the pages. GSAK has lots of tools for producing indexes (by location, bearing, etc).

If you don’t want to use GSAK you can just save selected cache pages directly to the PocketPC and again view with the browser.

PocketPC Cachemate is an option but is s l o w at more than 1000 caches.

    Commander, Major,

Remember that we are being joined by several rookies on their first Team Badger mission so allowances need to be made for rookie SNAFUs.

Because of the presence of rookies, I will have the supplies necessary for the Team Badger xHAxINGx initiation ceremony. I am having trouble finding the right kind of tar though.
