Did you ever see “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World”…
    It’s nothing like that Really
The “finder’s tree protocol” has eliminated most of the knife fights.

It appears you need an operating system from this century.

I saw this thread first on a PC running Windows 2000. When I clicked on the mappoint link, nothing special came up.

When I got to an XP machine, then the fireworks worked. I’m going to go play with it now.

I may have to skip a grade or two…

My sister and her hubby are returning from Australia sometime that day and I’m supposed to go pick them up. The way I figure it, they will have been on airplanes and in airports for 15 hours so what is another 6 hours more while I geocache. Well my sister isn’t as open minded as I am so I may join you later or graduate earlier.

I hear some of these caches have a reputation for water so we should’nt wear our school clothes.

A few years back there was a cache near Madison used to exchange porn. I don’t remember the details but local cachers cleaned it up.
Every cacher is on the front lines.

    in reply to: Slingbox #1761194

I don’t know anything about the Slinger product but not knowing something has ever stopped me from having an opinion.

The famous line from the movie The Graduate was: “I’ve got one word for you: plastics”.
If the movie was made today the word would be ‘digital’.

The Internet was made to move digital information from one place (a server) to another (the client). The Slinger becomes your personal server (technically it may be a peer to peer but the principle is the same) for your laptop anywhere in the world. It ‘digitizes’ the tv signal and serves it up as files to your computer. As far as the Internet is concerned: bits is bits.

The thing that makes me wince is imagining everyone doing this eating up my bandwidth.

If the Madison sap is too far away, the Wehr Nature Center in Milwaukee can be just as sweet. Basic info follows, you’ll have to figure out the rest:

    March 25–26, 2006, 1–4 p.m. General Public
    Rain or Shine

Get the spring juices flowing at Maple Sugar Days! Your whole family will hike with a naturalist guide to the sugarbush to see tapped sugar maples and taste fresh sap as it drips from the trees. Next, you’ll visit an old-time sugarin’ camp and hear stories of how the old-timers produced maple syrup and sugar – but you may be distracted from the stories by the oh-so-sweet aroma of clear maple sap boiling down to rich, dark maple syrup!

It sounds like you are using the base map in the GPSr which includes the Interstates and some state highways and little else.

But you loaded the Florida maps. It is possible to force the GPSr to use the base map but you have to work to do it.

When I’m in an area that all I have is the base map I switch to ‘offroad’ and chase the needle at the same time trying to stay on the roads.

Looking at a topo map for the park, the max vertical distance is around 400 ft.

In the immortal words of Arlene of CacheCows:
    I HATE BROWN LINES

The map of the park is very brown. That seems to be a given for this event. They had to find the lumpiest part of Illinois.

    Great, congratulations.
The new member plan is working nicely.

in reply to: Was upgrading your GPS worth it? #1761202

    My GPSr history:

    code:

    Model Value Features

    Garmin GPS 12 1 Geko's
    (Pre Geocaching) granddad

    Garmin GPS V 2 Greyscale
    (4 Years geocaching) urban mapping

Garmin GPS C60S 2.2 Color mapping,
    (4 months geocaching) compass

    Notes:

-Mapping great to get near to the cache, once your feet are on the ground rarely important.

-Going from V to C60 I was disappointed because I wanted a greater increase in value. The V had features not found on the 60! Given the option again, I’d have the V refurbished at a much reduced cost.

    -All three still working.

-60s best features: fewer batterys with increased life, built in compass means I don’t need to carry a traditional compass. I never use my man-purse (campaign bag) in the field anymore.

May the same energy and enthusiasm that you brought to Wisconsin geocaching see you thru your current challenge.

I have a lot of Socko related memories and look forward to more.
