I got a ‘bug’ that wants to go to Florida, but it weighs 250lbs and likes Mexican food. Got room?

This line is from my Garmin 60CS Manual:
    Temp. range: 5ºF to 158ºF (-15ºC to 70ºC)

When the temperature falls below 5 degrees the GPS only points to the ‘Home’ waypoint.

After 1 hour it switches to point to the nearest psychiatric facility.

To bring this into our world:

    • Never touch a traveling cache, you don’t know where it has been.
    • Travel bugs carry more than cute knick-knacks.
    • When you find a cache, you’ve cached with everyone else who found it before you … so practice safe caching, be the first finder.

I second this thought. Now with the new mechanism that allows the cache maker to supply supplemental waypoints (therefore no finger-dinking), you could do the Mona Lisa or something in a very detailed ‘draw-by-number’ cache.

I cached with Bobcat at the campout last year.

It’s easy, I stopped caching 8 times last month alone.

But I’m not married , have no kids and I have a flexible job so nobody but the cat cared if I went caching.

But then my cat died last year So now nobody cares.

But you know, my main reason to go caching is “to be alone”. Go figure.

in reply to: Where do you need our help? #1760890

I would like to see an educational fund that can be tapped by any WGA member who is giving a presentation, seminar, etc.

The funds would be used for copying costs for flyers or handouts, fees for presentation rooms, etc.

As with all things, there would need to be guidelines and limits, but thats for people with a higher pay grade than me

in reply to: Travel Bug metal tags being taken from bugs #1741088

What the heck is the point of taking someone else’s tag?

A long time ago a newbie thought the point of travel bugs was similar to the trading in a cache. He thought that you grabbed a bug and -replaced- the item with one of your own. Once he was traced and the mechanics explained he was embarrassed out of caching (I never saw him post/log again).

My first guess is that ignorance is the cause.

Yes, there are two possible levels:
A selectable icon for each type (traditional, multiple etc).

A second level includes a selectable icon to reflect both type and status (traditional-found, multiple-placed etc).

Personally I prefer the first level because there are too many symbols to keep straight when using the second level.

Micros (size) are handled as a special case.

The choices are made in the download-to-GPSr menus and/or the export dialogs.

in reply to: Painful Paperless – Help With Plucker #1741050

I have not used Plucker for 2 years but I remember some things. Plucker transfers HTML files from the PC to your palm starting at a root.

It procceeds to a number of layers of links. If that layer setting is too high (4 was scary) then either Plucker runs forever or you run of out memory on the Palm. If you reduce the layer setting, things might work better.

Related to this, there is a Spinner setting that puts the translated clues on the cache page as opposed to a separate page. This reduces the need for higher layer numbers.

I’d like to offer my perception on what being on the board means and doesn’t mean:

    • It is a voluntary position. There is no pay. There is no compensation for travel expenses etc.
    • It is a two year term. Plan to be involved for two years.
    • It is not an honorary position. You are a board member because you love geocaching and its people and have something to offer.
    • Most of the board activities are handled electronically (the message board, email, etc) but you will be asked to travel to a few meetings in the state (usually central) over the year.
    • The two most visible board activities are the annual campout and picnic, which you will be expected to help organize, run and attend.
    • You will take some guff, directly and indirectly from the membership. If you internalize criticism or lash-out, this is not a job for you.
    • You need to work well with others, sometimes with people you’ll see once a year.
    • If your mission is to start a crusade on the quality or mechanics of caching (example: ‘ban all micros’) find another soapbox.
    • All cache approvers need to be board members but only a few board members are approvers.
    • If you are nominated, accept and are elected you will be working with some of the best people you’ll ever meet.
