I’m sure I could stop if I wanted to. But that’s the problem with addiction isn’t it? Wanting to stop?

You might know you should stop something. You may know it is being very disruptive and having a negative impact on your life. But truly wanting to stop is a key.

But if I thought geocaching was having a negative impact on my life, relationships, family or others around me then I’m confident I could just walk away. Right now, however, the only negative thing I can come up with is the extra gas money being spent.

On the other hand, I’m spending more time with my family doing something active. Getting more exercise. Getting outdoors more. Meeting new people. So… I have no interest in quitting and don’t expect to any time soon.

If you can’t figure out how to load them into your phone, you can also email them to yourself and open the attachment when you get it. That should then ask you if you want to import into c:geo too.

Personally, I prefer to keep a small collection of .gpx files on the phone. That lets you drop the current stored cache list and change to a different one as needed.

For example, I’m visiting an aunt soon so I have a .gpx each for:

      * All recently found caches along the route
      * All caches with 2+ favorites along the route
      * All recently found caches in her hometown
      * All caches with 3+ favorites in her hometown (2+ resulted in too many)

I have been using GSAK for this. Pull a pocket query into it, click the filter button, dates tab, and choose to limit to last found since xx/xx/xxxx.

Once you have the list you want, File->Export and export as a GSX or whatever format you need. It’s a few extra steps, but gets the job done.

in reply to: BOD Takes Action on Event Vendors #1965374

As someone who has attended a lot of conferences over the past couple of decades where there are vendors present, I can say that commercial interests can indeed severely impact socialization at an event.

The worst I’ve seen is when vendors are not identified as such and sell in areas intermixed with the main event. In those cases, you are almost afraid of striking up a conversation with someone (or responding when approached) if you don’t know them because it eventually turns into a sales pitch.

The least impact on socialization that I have seen has been when vendors had a designated area or at least had to identify themselves somehow as a vendor (a ribbon on their name tag for example.) Then attendees had the option to go look at wares for sale or avoid it. They also knew to prepare for a possible sales pitch when someone with a vendor ribbon walked up and started talking to them.

Personally I wouldn’t go to a WGA event to buy things (except WGA items to help fund the group.) If there was a vendor area that was easy enough to stroll through, however, I probably would check it out just in case something caught my eye.

I also like the percent of gross sales fee idea. I’d hate to exclude someone selling $30 worth of bison tubes due to the need to pay a $25 fee. (I just bought a half dozen at the bonfire event out in the parking lot. In this case, the selling was separate from the main event area and nobody was being accosted as they passed by… I felt it was perfectly acceptable.)

in reply to: Why do you cache? Philosophical discussion #1968761

Growing up, we often would “go for a walk” which meant heading out to the northwoods somewhere nearby (grew up in Crandon) and spending the rest of the day exploring.

Since my dad is the one who grew up wandering, hunting and fishing those areas he knew where to go. Now that I live in the Wausau area, I wanted a way to find those cool paths and interesting areas. I also wanted a reason to get out and get some exercise.

That’s why I started. Now that we’ve been getting out, my reasons to continue are changing.

I enjoy finding caches hidden nearly in plain sight… this secret that most of the world doesn’t know about even though they pass them daily.

I enjoy finding those gems like the small veterans memorial that I drove past for years and never knew existed.

I like trudging through the woods and then emerging at an amazing view that I would have never seen during my lifetime without geocaching.

I love all the free swag. (Yeah right… if you are in it for the swag, you’re in the wrong hobby.)

I’m about 1/3 through the book, and am enjoying it. Please don’t post spoilers here!

None of the caches in the book are found on a guardrail.

Hope that doesn’t ruin the story for you. 🙂

The book is pretty decent. Got through quite a few chapters on my nook during the flight down to Atlanta.

If I had to guess, I’d say the author really is a geocacher and actually has had experience in the FBI. (Then again, I never bothered to read the bio so maybe that’s already confirmed.)

    Now I need to ask…. Gokd? I don’t know that one… unless it’s a typo, then I can guess. 🙂

Instead of “Gokd” you probably meant to type “One of the best moments of my life was”… I get that a lot. xD

Hard to even imagine finding that many caches.

I’m going to remember that quote. It is what I think every time someone tells me it is too cold to live in Wisconsin.

I just saw this post and am late to the welcoming party as is usually the case.

Thanks MM. Not sure if we’ve met, but I know several of your caches. 🙂
