It looks like there will be at least 10 – 15 Wisconsin geocaching Teams at the Midwest Geobash. I am wondering if there is interest in those attending in a Wisconsin meet and greet???? I am thinking of something simple, like a campire with beer and stories.
Is there interest from the other folks who will be attending this on something like this? I am open to other ideas as well.

I’m now planning to make it to the event. I’m too late to register but they told me to come on over anyway. Where will the WGA’ers be hanging out?
I’m reading A Thousand Splendid Sons by Khaled Hosseini, who also wrote The Kite Runner. Both are very good.
I just finished A Long Way Gone – Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, which is incredible. I highly recommend it. If you would like to borrow my copy, I’ll leave it in an ammo box somewhere for you. 😀
I agree with those who would let this one remain. I have done a couple of tree-climbing geocaches and they’re among my favorites. I recognize that I’m not a “normal” geocacher. I like to climb trees; always have since I was kid. That’s also why I’m a rock climber today. Most people don’t do these things. Some do.

Sometimes I ask, is this really worth it. Go buy a Jeep from Wal-mart.

He’s sure a lot cuter than your avatar photo! 😯

Did u c his numbers… 🙂
You’re twisting the original meaing of GeoPink’s post, because he was joking that zuma posted the same message twice. But I think you knew that. 🙂 Regarding my number of posts in these forums, did u also c how long I’ve been at it? Also, most of those were made in the Board of Directors forum when I was either president, vice president or secretary.
It was interesting for me to watch this segment after having sent several email invitations to Dan Small and others at Outdoor Wisconsin back in the early days of the sport (I emailed them in 2001 and 2002). Dan replied to me at that time, saying something to the effect of there are so many outdoor activities that OW can’t cover them all. I believe The Beast (Ray) also wrote to the program a couple of years later with no success. Now when they finally do a segment, they include several missteps, as pointed out above. And the urban drive-up caches they chose were no doubt convenient for the TV crew but hardly a good representation of how geocaching can help people experience nature, exercise and the outdoors.
I have many activites that I enjoy — geocaching being one of them — but I’ve always tried not to be obsessive about anything. Enthusiastic and passionate are good, but obsessive people scare me a little.

Wouldn’t it be great if there were some sort of generic web-site where we could all go and type in coordinates and see if there was a cache/mystery cache/multi-cache WP nearby?
Sure would make placing caches easier!!!
The reason there isn’t such a place to query is that, in other regions of the country, a few geocachers have tried to play “Battleship” to hone in on final coordinates for a puzzle by submitting lots of coordinates for caches to see if they are too close to the final, rather than solving the puzzle or finding the intermediate waypoints of a multi. I know that sounds sick, but it’s true.
For those interested in getting together for canoes or kayaks this weekend at the campout, here’s a suggested plan.
If you want to try your hand at kayaking, (or rent a canoe at the park) we could meet near wherever the canoe rental place is within the park around 10 o’clock Saturday morning. It’s either on Allen Lake or Hartman Lake. I forget which.
Then Saturday afternoon, say 1 p.m., anyone who wants to gather for a flotilla on the Chain O Lakes could meet at the DNR boat launch, (coordinates provided by One Paddle Short): 44° 19′ 40″ N, 89° 11′ 25″ W
This is just a suggested plan. We can iron out details around the Friday evening campfire.
The forecast for Waupaca now says a high of 82 on Saturday.
I’ll be at campsite #32 with a couple of kayaks and a bike on top of the vehicle.
One “good” thing that garlic mustard has going for it is that it’s not too difficult to pull out of the ground. Also, the leaves and stems are not toxic to the skin, so most people shouldn’t get a rash from pulling the stuff. However, a pair of work gloves will definately come in handy.
As one of the volunteer reviewers (for Iowa), I always look at the hints written by cache owners when they submit a new cache. For the most part, geocachers seem to understand the purpose of the hint. However, I do see an occassional less-than-useful hint. For example:
“This is one of my favorite parks.”
“Be sure to bring along a piece of metal tied to a string at least 2 feet long.”
“Your best approach is from the north.”If I see that a hint doesn’t fulfill the intended purpose — giving geocachers a last resort clue that they can decrypt at ground zero — before I publish the cache, I think it’s due primarily to inexperience. I send them a note with my recommendation for changing their hint and why. In most cases, they seem happy to oblige. They simply haven’t thought things through and put themselves in the shoes of people who will be hunting for their cache.
Hey, I think I just wrote today’s http://iowaadmin.blogspot.com/ blog post.
I’m moving the paddling discussion over to this subject…

This is off the DNR boat launch site:
44° 19′ 40″ N, 89° 11′ 25″ W
The upper chain is a fantastic place to paddle and is only a few minutes from the park. You can also access Marl lake and get out at Whispering Pines (and there’s a cache there!). Actually you can access the entire chain of 20 some lakes from the upper chain. We’ll be bringing our kayaks and love to paddle this area- how about planning on a group paddle Saturday afternoon sometime? We’ll be camping in family camping and shouldn’t be too hard to spot- just look for a trailer with four kayaks on it.
OPS, thanks for the coordinates. I never would have known you can reach the other lakes from that launch site. I’m looking forward to this.
Here’s a Google map showing the launch provided by One Paddle Short:

There is also the beautiful chain of lakes (some 20 connected lakes) located within a few miles of the park. … If you’d like I can try to get coords for the landings.
If you can provide those coordinates, that would be great.
