The preview blurb on today’s cue page [with my comments in brackets]:
    Tomorrow in Cue
Geocaching, high-tech treasure hunting using the Web and GPS, has spawned an active community of enthusiasts in Wisconsin who use Web sites, maps and Global Positioning System receivers [Didn’t they just say that in the same sentence?] to hide and seek booty [Really? Booty? I’ll have to check the features on mine.] in some of the most interesting and beautiful places in the state.

[Well, at least they got that part right. All in all, not a bad little blurb, even though a bit redundant. However, the teaser on page 2 of the main section says this:]

    COMING TOMORROW
    Treasure hunters
More and more people in search of buried treasure [arrrgh!! not the dreaded “buried treasure” phrase!] are exploring the world and their own backyards using the Web and GPS.

It’s been sold. Thanks for looking.

in reply to: Your first "stupid question" … #1763971

    You’re right, that’s pretty stupid.
    (Sorry, Ron, I couldn’t resist! 😀 )

So now I guess I have to fess up. My stupidist question was not actually geocaching related, but it’s a good story — at least it used to be. When I was in college the world was still using slide rules, although a few new-fangled calculators were around. I was a liberal arts kind of student, but I decided to take some science courses too, so I signed up for a physics class, for which I had to own a slide rule. The first time I picked it up I asked someone why the inches weren’t all the same size.

That story used to be a lot funnier when people still knew what a slide rule was.

Let me guess… it’s a $100 bill issued by the government of __________ (fill in the name of a country with a 1000% annual inflation rate).

Congratulations to you, Jeremy! It seems like only 5 years ago that there were only a few of us finding caches in Wisconsin. Hmm, I guess it was just 5 years ago.

I’m working hard to beat your low rate record to 1000. ! However, I did find one cache today. I’d better slow down a bit.

in reply to: kbraband/active2together/Ken hits 500 in BC! #1763516

Thanks for the congrats! It may have taken me longer to reach 500 than some, but the journey has been great… so far. In actuality, if you were to add my “active2gether” and event caches in, I’ve found between 800 and 900, I guess. But who’s counting! 😀

Can you give waypoint references for specific caches where you think this occurred?

in reply to: Requirements for Travelers – Canada #1762792

We made it home fine from Canada last night. No hassles at all despite my expired passport, but I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. I’m definately going to get my passport renewed right away.

    me too!

Mary and I are in Canada right now. At the Milwaukee airport on Thursday, I discovered that my passport expired 2 months ago. The Northwest Airlines travel agent in Milwaukee had to go online to check my records but since I had a passport (even though it was expired) I was approved to fly to Canada. As someone said, the law to have either a passport or birth certficate goes into stringent effect at the end of this year. Right now it’s a travel recommendation.

At the request of the DNR, I wrote copy, provided photos and emailed it all to them after we met with them last year. I don’t know if they simply forgot or what. ❓ ❓

I just discovered a geocaching blog that has kudos for my WPRA geocaching PowerPoint presentation: http://adventuresingeocaching.blogspot.com/2006/05/good-presentations.html

I organized a WGA CITO event in Milwaukee Co. parks along the lakefront in 2004. In that instance, I worked with Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful as part of their Great American Cleanup Day events. They were very accommodating towards us. We had a good turnout of geocachers. I wouldn’t assume you’d be turned down by Milwaukee Co. Parks. Go for it!

Very cool article, but the reporter needs a better editor.

    “..Geoffrey empathized.”

He did? Well, then I’m glad Brian was able to feel and understand another’s situation, feelings, and motives. 🙂
