in reply to: Geocaching – Why Me? #1746720

I agree with The Beast’s treatise on geocaching. There are also some additional appeals for me.

    The “connectivity factor”
It gives you a feeling of connectivity to go on-line and read about other people’s hunts, finds, no-finds, and yes even mishaps. And if they post photos, all the better. It lets us feel part of a community of geocachers and learn more about each other than we would normally get to know if we depended only on face-to-face conversations.

    Silent Sport
You don’t have to depend on a motorized machine to provide your recreation. Your own muscle power supplies the fun. This is also why I prefer cycling over motorcycling, canoeing over powerboating (although I own a power boat too), cross-country skiing over snowmobiling, walking or running instead of 4-wheeling. Many types of geocache hunts qualify as silent sport too, especially our big WGA events such as the campout and summer picnic when we park our vehicles for the weekend and find all the caches via walking or bicycling.

    Alone again naturally
Even though there is a geocaching community, the opportunity to get away from it all in the great outdoors has great appeal. Getting out into the still of nature, being led there by others without being part of a large tour group, and pointing out trails and places for others to go — those are strong attractions of geocaching for me.

Can someone scan this and post it so we can all take a look?

Reminder: All T-shirt orders are due this week. These are going to be popular items, so be sure you place your order now instead of wishing you did later.

in reply to: Presentations in PowerPoint #1746665

I borrowed mine from Cachew and revised it somewhat so you might want to ask him for a copy.

This sounds like a job for the WGA — If we collected everyone’s geocaching PowerPoint files we could make them available for downloading.

in reply to: Camp site payments #1754489

All those signed up for the group camp: If the WGA does not receive your payment by April 30, you may lose your reservation. We are close to reaching our maximum number of 100 campers at the group sites. If you signed up, please pay now. We don’t want to turn people away only to have others not pay and then not show up.

It’s great to see your enthusiasm! I think many of us are excited about the campout too. What to expect? Hmm, that’s hard to answer without knowing what your expectations are. As a veteran camper, one thing that you are probably already aware of is that it can get chilly at night in mid-May. Don’t be surprised to awaken and find frost covering the ground. Bring warm coats, gloves, hats, and water-proof boots, at least for the early morning hours. Some people have tent heaters, although with a warm sleeping bag you can get by just fine. Some people like to bring treats to pass around at the campfire. We’ve had everything from popcorn to cherry cobbler. A few bottles of your favorite local brew to trade is also a fun campfire event. For the night caches, LED headlights come in very handy. The WGA will be sending out reminder emails in the days preceeding the campout. Meanwhile, if any other veterans of the 2002 and 2003 campouts have any tips, how about adding a few here?

I experience this same problem. The solution that I was given, thanks to JeremyV is:
First, make sure that HotSync Manager is running. To start it, go to Start/All Programs/Palm Desktop/HotSync Manager.
Once you have HotSync manager running, if you still don’t have any luck try this:
    1. open Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete,
    2. In the Processes tab, look for a couple of programs that may be conflicting with COM1. They will have your name or your computer name as the user name — NOT “System”. The processes that I end that seem to do the trick are SERVIC~1.EXE and HKCMD.EXE. Click on these processes and then click on the “End Process” button.

in reply to: CITO event April 17 #1736892

If you’re sitting on the fence about whether to come to the CITO event, maybe this will provide the incentive you need. The Beast is going to hide 8 temporary caches in and around the clean-up area. You’ll be able to hunt and log these as part of the event. Now, unless you have a cow to move Saturday*, we’ll see you there.

*Read the posts on the event page for an explanation.

That is a key reason for me to give it a try!

How about most posts in the WGA forums? (Just kidding)

    in reply to: T-Shirts? #1754548

With the help of a graphic artist we have “cleaned up” the t-shirt design a little. See the latest image below. We’re thinking of putting the design on a dark green shirt so a little modification may be necessary to make it work against a dark background. Meanwhile, I urge you to place your orders NOW! We’re going to set a deadline of April 30 to have your t-shirts orders in. Even if you are not planning to attend the campout, you can still order shirts. (What a country!) Place your orders here: http://wi-geocaching.com/oscommerce/

I managed to bag a confluence nearly three years ago: http://www.confluence.org/confluence.php?lat=43&lon=-95&visit=1 Any other WGAers have one to their credit?

in reply to: Lowes Lake cache #1739755

Thanks, Russ. GC.com decided to work again just before we left, so we were able to print out the page and take it along. Thanks for the offer to help. Now I need to get area caches reloaded into my GPS and PDA so I don’t get caught short again.
