Regarding the video, we did quite a bit of preparation work and had a DNR park manager in mind to give us an on-camera testimonial about geocaching. We had WGA members lined up to be our on-camera participants to place and find caches. We also had a another WGA member who works in the video business prepared to help us do the shooting and editing. However, at nearly the last minute the DNR informed us that they could not allow their employee to participate until they knew what the official state policy towards geocaching was going to be. Somewhere along the line this policy is being held from public release, so it has affected several WGA initiatives.

You can view the location and other details at the geocaching.com page here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d8db4f5e-8e85-4abf-8fd3-9aad41a7550f

    1. I first heard about geocaching in Feb. 2001 from Jeremy Irish, who posted a message about his new “gps sport” in a Yahoo group forum dedicated to gps use: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gpsnavigatoradventureclub/

    2. I use my GPS for driving, cycling, canoeing, hiking, boating, flying, and oh yeah, geocaching.

    3. There’s bo such thing as too cold to find a cache. See GrouseTales’ posting and photos. However, it can be too hot especially when the skeeters are thick. But I go anyway.

Jeff, so far all board business has been conducted on-line, mostly in the Board of Directors forum. We’re talking about trying to have in-person board meetings during the coming year, but so far it’s been difficult to coordinate a time and location to get everyone together, and the forum has been an efficient way to conduct business.

in reply to: National Forests? #1746081

We discussed this question in the WGA Board of Directors forum and no one can seem to recall why the line about no caches in national forests was included in our list. Therefore, we’re going to remove it. As far as we know, geocaching is not prohibited in National forests. Thanks for asking the question!

Thanks for the nice words. Maybe if I told my teenage kids I’m an “icon” they would consider going geocaching with me sometime. But seriously, it’s been tons of fun to play and work at geocaching with so many geocachers in Wisconsin and around the Midwest. Because so many people have done so much to make the WGA strong and fun for everyone, it’s dangerous to start naming names because you just can’t name them all. One of the things I’m proud of is that we’ve always tried to make the WGA a welcoming organization for everyone, whether you’ve found your first geocache or if you’ve found 500. At the risk of naming names, I can’t think of “teams” who have done more to support this goal than Team CacheCows and JeremyV –for their development and maintenance of our outstanding website; Trudy and the Beast and the Lil Otter for all the behind-the-scenes emailing they do to welcome geocachers to the sport; and Brian of Team GrouseTales for the many hours he puts in working with geocachers to get their caches approved in Wisconsin. These and many others who do so much for geocaching deserve our thanks.

We’re planning to be there. What’s the best ski wax for dirt and rocks?

in reply to: Board Elections – Nominations #1746055

Our webmasters set it up to show names below that paragraph … “The following…” only when they have received one nomination and are in a queue waiting for a second. The second usually comes quickly from another member. That’s why you don’t see names listed there for very long, if at all.

To all WGA members: We’re still looking for more nominations. Please review the bylaws to learn more about what Board members do. Then consider volunteering to serve. It’s a fun bunch of people, and you get the opportunity to shape the direction and events of the WGA. If you’d like to be nominated, just post a note to say so somewhere in the forums and I’m sure you’ll find yourself on the list straight away.

A couple of weeks ago I informed the present WGA board that I decided not to run for the board again. However, now that the hectic Christmas season is over and things are calming down, and after some encouragement and arm twisting from Brian of Team GrouseTales, I feel re-energized. There are important tasks we need to accomplish such as WGA incorporation, filing for non-profit status, continuing work with the DNR on a state-wide geocaching policy, and of course, the campout and other events. If anyone wishes to nominate me, I will glady accept the nomination.

Way to go, Rhonda! Nice work. It just shows to go what a positive attitude and a willingness to work with instead of against park managers can achieve. Any geocacher can do it if they just put forth the effort.

Many cachers, myself included, are in no shape for running through the woods in cold weather (or any weather ). I don’t want to douse cold water on anyone coming up with fun ideas. Brian is a good friend and I hope my speaking out on this is taken as an honest airing of opinions and not a butting of heads. That being said, personally, I don’t like the idea of racing to a bunch of geocaches at all, whether it’s by SUV or skateboard, and especially not for money. However, I also recognize that many geocachers are deep into the competitive aspects and the numbers, so it’s fine if you want to organize this as a private non-WGA event for those people as you stated. Just understand that what you’re describing is a road race and that carries all the potential safety issues that go along with racing on public streets.

Why not conduct it all in one location with no motorized vehicles allowed? Better for everyone’s safety, health, and the environment.
