Thraxman, that’s pretty good for 7:46 in the morning. You must be a coffee drinker.

No, unless you count our afternoon cache hunting trip in the Madision area yesterday. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

It’s funny how some caches can be so hard when other people find them so easily. My hardest caches would have to include the ones we could not find at all. We could not find Little Cache Calf in the Wildwood. The fact that it was 11 p.m. on a December night after attending CacheCow’s party may have contributed to our level of difficulty. And we could not find A Little Bit of Paradise. Even though a lot of people seem to have trouble with Ottawa Panorama, a friend and I found that one fairly easily. (There, I just admitted defeat but saved face by mentioning a hard cache we DID find.)

You seem to assume my encounter with Beverly was something other than gentlemanly. I assure you, I was a respectful geocacher. While it’s true I did “open the lid”, I gently signed the log book and was careful to replace things as I found them.

I don’t think Sam should post when he thinks the ice is no longer safe, because that implies that the ice is safe until then. As you implied, that decision should be left up to each cache hunter. I think it’s perfectly fine to place a cache on an island and then leave it up to cache hunters to accept full responsibility for how, when, and if they’re willing to go find it. My only beef was with the rating system itself, not with Sam’s cache. I think there are much more difficult types of cache hunts than using a boat or walking across ice.

Oh, I didn’t mean to imply that you’re treading on our turf at all. Go ahead and do your thing, man! It’s a big world out there.

I think Carpe Cache and Sam’s new cache are the only 5s in the SE part of the state.

They are similar because of the cash prize. My final container is out there in its hiding spot. Now I have to decide how much more difficult to make it. That is, will it be a multi-step hunt or not.
Regarding Sam’s Island Sanctuary, I guess he’s right to call that a 5 star according to the criteria — after the ice melts. It sure wasn’t difficult when we walked across the ice to it. (Don’t get me wrong, it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it a lot.) With each passing day the difficulty level increases with that one. I know I’m probably not in the majority on this next opinion, but I don’t believe a boat is special equipment. Anyone can park their rear end in a boat and ride to an island. They don’t even have to paddle it or navigate it themselves if they have help. That’s why we didn’t give our Uncharted Island 5 stars, even though no one has been able to get to it since we placed it last September. Now climbing gear and scuba gear… THAT’S special equipment, definately 5-star worthy.

Alan must have been reading my mind a couple of weeks ago (or my forum posting). I hid a cache that has a cache prize a couple of weeks ago, but I’m not going to post it for awhile — when the marshy land thaws and the bugs come out.

I don’t have a problem with the concept as long as it’s done in a way that doesn’t exclude “public” cachers. Of course, anyone is free to invite his or her buddies to a private unpublicized cache. However, WGA shouldn’t become a sanctioning body of such caches, IMHO. Here’s a thought. Maybe you could post the announcement here in the WGA forums but stress that it is not a WGA or geocaching.com sanctioned event. Then eveyone who wanted to participate could do so by signing up ahead of time at the designated web site. They would have to give their name, address, etc. to sign up. This would cull out the yahoos who might want to anonymously plunder the cache.

Am I hurting the sport by not being inclusive, even though I may put the future of the hunt itself at risk? Am I truly an insipid bozo for making caches with contents that don’t just come out of my kitchen junk drawer?

    What do you guys think?

YD, I feel your pain. I have sometimes thought of putting a “valuable” cache with really cool stuff in it, but then I keep thinking about what happened to your Collectibles Cache. More often my usual thought pattern when I’m thinking to myself is “Ken, don’t put it out there unless you can put up with someone stealing it, because that’s the risk you take for leaving a box in the woods.” Still, it would be nice to generate excitement by putting something way cool in a cache. I’m kicking around some ideas on how to do that so that only bonfide cache hunters will be able to “cache in”.

I think they will ALL eventually know it’s going on as we generate more and more publicity. All they have to do is go to the state map and see there are caches in their parks. But you’re right, “responsible” is a key word. As long as we, as cachers are responsible, they may know it’s going on, but they will not prohibit it. They may even encourage it.

If so what are the proper channels to go thru and is there a DNR contact person that others have used that could be used for a reference or contact person?

hotdogs, take a look at my posting over in the “General” section of this forum, where I address this very question.

One of my favorites is River Cache by JTJ. It’s a nice hike with beautiful views overlooking the Wisconsin River and you’re likely see soaring bald eagles there. At present the cache is out of commission for the winter, but JTJ posted that he will have it back in place on April 1.

That marker under the bridge was part of a cache called Troll’s Treasure, placed by Cedarburg Searchers. You’re right, it has been archived. The site for it is: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=5495 Robin and I had previously created a virtual cache at the Covered Bridge called Family Bicycling Virtual Cache. When Cedarburg Searchers created Troll’s Treasure, we archived our virtual cache, thinking there was no longer a reason to have a virtual cache there since cachers would come to the park to seek the “real” cache. Then when Troll’s Treasure was later stolen and archived, we un-archived our virtual cache. It can be seen at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=1552
