We have one coin out, and thought about releasing more but after all the troubles we’ve had with the one it really makes us wonder about doing trackables. I was hoping to get the coin back home on a trip, but last we heard it was heading for Georgia.
If we do bugs I think I may just go to Wallyworld and print a dog tag and keep the original and send the Walmart copy on its way so it won’t be a big loss. Can’t add more than what has been said, but there have been a few more caches added to the trail going to West Salem. I actually like the fact that the trails here haven’t turned into power trails.
Food, Trempealu Hotel is great for food and easy to get to once off the trail.
The caches up here have a unique style for the most part, but a few gems stand out as pointed out. Watch out for that one cache in West Salem, yes those folks can be pretty testy with cachers. We went to the Como Zoo on Monday to avoid the rain and it followed us up there all day! Definetly putting a damper on any caching for us also, just don’t feel like going outside with everything so yucky.
I know of the ones Nate has to move.. patiently waiting.Found only a cover (barely there in of itself) and no logbook for a cache, returned to Geocaching and saw that folks had been logging only finding the cover for quite a while and logging that as a find. I claimed the find, and then posted a N/M log as it was obviously gone for awhile. And yes we did trash out the cover, and it did get eventually archived.
Have found a few that I didn’t want to wreck, one frozen shut and no matter what I did I couldn’t open it and another was just crossthreaded on and I couldn’t get it and claimed it. I will say we have yet to just log a find on a cache that we felt we were close on, we almost always have the cache in hand and or a very good feeling the cache was at that point, i.e the cover.Welcome to another LaCrosse area cacher! Lots of interesting caches and fun places to find once you start exploring.
Sent the Geomate with my two oldest kids this last week on their trip with Grandma and Grandpa. Chose it over a regular gps as like the last poster pointed out that it looks like it would be good for them to use as they don’t know exactly where they will be and have access to a computer to keep adding/removing caches on their trip. Haven’t heard back from them yet if they’ve tried using it, I hope they do just to see if it is good for this type of use.
I’m not a fan of replacing a container, in fact I don’t think we’ve ever done that. I have left filmcans in containers that were falling apart to help protect the log.
An excellent case of what I’m talking about is this cache in Iowa that we did a couple weeks ago: GC16CTT
I have emailed the owner several times to try to get them to take care of the cache, have gone on the Iowa forums to try to see if anyone knows the folks and pretty much it sounds like the cache will remain the way it is. I almost want to go there and replace it, but then like stated we will still have geogarbage again eventually as it isn’t being maintained.
My thought is that the N/M should be used a little bit more than what it is, as it provides a way to warn folks that the cache may need some tlc or that there is a problem and if they wish to avoid it they can and the only way to flag it out for those is with the N/M log. Please keep that in mind as one reason to post it, I too try to keep a stock of paper and baggies along with photo cans to help do maintenance but sometimes they need more than that.Yeah, I tossed that one in just for that reason as an example of how could it disappear?
To find the ones with Aliens do a search for TheBalk’s as owners and you will find at least 2 fun caches with aliens as the theme. I added aliens in just as a light hearted idea to make this a fun thread.Haha!! I saw that at a local “golf course” they had that posted on their wall only it was warning golfers, when I saw this thread I thought of that right away!
Following this discussion with interest as I too just got a kayak for geocaching, unlike the o.p. my wife was the one who had to twist my arm to get it.
I have a few here along the Mississippi that look to be kayak friendly so I may try them one day and I also have a couple ideas for placements in a nearby area that would require some fun.Congratulations!! I thought hitting our 1,000 was big I can’t imagine 7,000!!! Keep it up you two!
Following this discussion as I was wondering why he archived it also, and I think that this one would have to be tightened up on logging requirements like others have said.
Side note, like CodeJunkie I haven’t done any Earthcaches even though I have a couple of thoughts on some just due to the hoops that they now have. I wonder if this has drastically cut down on Earthcaches?Just to dust this one off and say my apologies that we couldn’t do it for our number 1000. We ended up having issues on two ends that wouldn’t have made it possible for us to do the cache until middle of June. Unfortuneatly, we met our goal of reaching 100 by Memorial Day and we didn’t feel like not caching for almost a whole month!
I’m thinking of trying to get a group together to do it itowards the end of the June if anyone is interested? Thanks Nate and RsSplash! It was fun having you along and lending a hand when we started having troubles. I discovered today that I did have the cache in Cacheberry, just helps to search the right terms I could have then done the waypoints as needed. Oh well…
Thanks for the feedback! I’m leaning heavily towards a Delorme, and almost pulled the trigger on the 40 when I saw Gander had them on sale until I saw that Walmart.com had them cheaper.. What to do? Wait for the 60 or buy a 40 is where I am at.
