Hey all! Finally back on here after being out signing trails.
I’ve thought about the ram system, and wasn’t sure how well it works. Nice to hear from other folks on how they use it. How did you figure out which caches are close to the trail that you will be on?I stepped off to the right once to take a photo, and I went from hardpack snow to snow up to my hip!! Good thing I had the sled right next to me so I could use the handlebars to get back up, so I can relate to the stepping into deep snow. Funny how it looks so innocent.
I’d like to see a variety of pq’s/bookmarks as I really don’t know where I will be riding this season. I think I may try to do a list of caches that I know are on the trail system for this part of the state and then add as other folks fill in the blanks also.
As for going off topic, all I can say is I guessed it was a triple when I first read the post! My sled guru when I first started looking for a newer snowmobile warned me to stay away from triples as they had burn down problems. Something about the way they are cooled. And you know what? I think he was right just by talking to other sledders as I’ve gotten further into the sport.
Cheezehead, didn’t know about your bookmark list, I have SGH’s on my list of keeping an eye on.
I figured that the icon was how the list was made, but in my short search I’ve noticed that alot of folks don’t put the icon on even though it could be reached quite easily from the trail and I am pondering on how to overcome that fact. My one thought was to mount a gps to the sled, but I find myself more focused on where I am currently instead of where I am going to be (if that makes sense).
Waiting on Birdin to put more out on the bike trail (psst, I have a few spots after brushing the trail to Rockland last Sunday…) I should have saved a few on the bike trail just so I could have a reason to have an enjoyable ride this winter, but then I had an enjoyable ride on the bike also.I should add my wife is going to Puerto Rico in January to visit her cousin, we have been discussing her doing at least one cache while down there. Not to steal the thread, but anyone have experience traveling like that with a gps?
Went with my neighbor to the far east side of Michigan to pick up a snowmobile back in Sept. When planning the trip and route I used Google Earth to plot the route and then followed it noting caches that were at rest areas, park & grabs or truckstops. Didn’t load all of them, but had the laptop along so I could dump them into the gps if needed.
We ended up doing two, one in Michigan just before our final stop and one in Indiana on the way back just before Chicago where we changed spots and gave us a chance to stretch. Now that you mention that, I recall seeing that!! Awesome, thanks for the reminder!!
Where is that thumbs up approval button on this site??I’ve used my Blackberry a couple of times and had some luck with it, and other times been way off. It works pretty decent especially when I have the caches already stored in the memory and can just pull up the nearest. I am pondering buying an unzipping program that will let me unzip pocket queries so that I can travel and cache on the fly.
All in all, I wouldn’t dump my gps, but when out and have time to kill the phone works.
Hello Jimmy, and I’ve added you to my list and hope to hear more from you. You’ll find that this is a fun sport and challenging at times!
Not familiar with that Lowrance product, but when I have questions/problems with my XOG I go to this forum:
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=163There seems to be some pretty decent people there that can help out usually.
I’m not sure about .loc’s but I know with my explorist 400 that I can convert .gpx files into the .upt’s via GSAK and also through Mapsend on Magellans site. Hope this helps!
PC Frog since we are in the same area, I’m curious as to which ones you have and if they match some of mine.
Having said that, I have a few challenges on my ignore, not because I’m not going to do them, just that I don’t like them popping up all the time on the pq’s and map when I do a search. I do have a couple that just frustrated us on the list and decided it best to remove them from always popping up in the pq’s.I use a macro that I got off the macro library for Gsak, here is the link to the macro:

Gotta Run has it nailed for how it works for us, sometimes the kids do manage to stay focused long enough to make the find, and then it usually ends up being a round of Bingo! being screamed at each other.
Wow! Congratulations! They must be mostly elsewhere since the area is pretty cleaned up for you two. I’ll have to hide a few to help you get to the next big number.
Congratulations folks! Seems you have a tendency to follow us around on our caching tours or just lead us by a bit.
Yeah, I saw the kayak reference, I do have access to a canoe, but my thought was a hike out when the ice was thick (and safe enough in my opinion). Only problem with the winter hunt is it may be located in such a way that makes it hard to find in the winter.
I’d hate to rent a boat for just a single possibly gone cache, so this one will just stay a thought in my mind for awhile. -
