  • in reply to: Looking for a few WGA State Park Trail Bosses. #1971925

I offered to take on any or all of the following parks Merrick, Perrot or Wyalusing. I haven’t heard anything concerning it since I inquired in May, yes I know about needing to be a member to do it and would have reupped to do the caches.

Got to agree with Gotta Run that seems to be my trend.

Looking at those I’d say you would be better off asking Vtwinspin to archive one of his caches. Both caches are owned by him as far as I know. Good luck finding someone out here who will go looking for those caches.

in reply to: Proposed Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge #1944777

I know over here with the Upper Mississippi refuge that snowmobile trails have to be rerouted around even if they were there before the refuge existed. Parts of the Great River trail go through the refuge and there is no issues with that being cut off however, across the river in Minnesota the DNR and the Fed’s are bumping heads as Minnesota wants to extend a bike trail and the route takes it through the refuge. Sounds like they are talking land swap at the moment. So it will hold up new ones and be a pain for anyone trying to do things near it.

Ha! That’s what I was going to put as I posted in the morning before I had my caffeine.

Staying on topic, I think it is in the games best interest of course to report issues like those spelled out in the original post. But, sadly I think alot of us don’t due to not wanting to cause trouble.

in reply to: Gaming the system #1959515

Labrat in my post I meant DNR regulated lands, i.e state parks and forests.

in reply to: Gaming the system #1959511

Yeah, especially when someone created a pdf version that is a fillable form so I can copy and paste the more common fields.

I have heard of DNR forms not being submitted to parks and know this directly as they asked me when I was there handing mine in if I knew this person. I gave them the person’s number and told them to contact the reviewer directly to get them removed. So far they have yet to do anything.

I think people don’t report them bad caches because they don’t want to look like troublemakers or end up somehow in a fight with the hider even though if they go to the reviewer directly no info should be given out. What steps are taken when someone submits a bad cache? Is there a process the reviewers make people prove that they aren’t faking the report just to mess with someone?

    @Todd300:
I wouldn’t let this deter you from caching in the LaCrosse area, in fact this should show that we are a passionate bunch and only want the best for caching in this area.
I started a bookmark list a while ago of caches I though showed be visited in the area. Along with that the area facebook group has started a cache of the month starting this month focusing on a 60? mile radius around 54601.
I highly recommend Gforce, Wisundevil, Trekkin and Birdin, TheBalk’s, Drhaas and many others who have hides as caches to do. Gforce has one up for COTM at the moment, that is spread out along the bike trail where alot of the locals have hidden caches to highlight what is available and to make it easier for folks to find caches that are of better quality.

Here is a post on the Coulee Region Cacher group from The Weasel from Marion Iowa who has cached in the LaCrosse area for some perspective:

“I can only speak as a guy from Iowa who has come across the border to the LaCrosse area for some caches only to find some mushy and moldy logbooks, and or/missing caches all together. I know we have some habitual people who don’t like to do any maint in my neck of the woods, so I know the feeling. Heck, I have a powertail that I put out a BUNCH of caches with another cacher that all have some thought in them and we are ALWAYS out there doing maint on. If we get a DNF on one of them, we are usually out in a day or 2 to find or fix it. We have had a LOT of people come to our area just to do that trail. It deff sucks the big one to have a bunch of caches by somebody who likes DNF’s and thinks that maint is archiving a cache and placing another cache in the same spot. Just remember there is a guy here in Iowa who feels your pain and is behind your effort of cleaning up the bad caches!!”

Seeing that The Balk’s posted as the first from the area I guess I will give my take also.

I totally agree with what Nate has said, I used to find everyone of your caches, but after going back to the same spot for the 3rd time in 3 years because the lack of maintenance caused issues or you decided to change up the style to make more dnf’s because you like to see the dnf’s is not how I like to play the game. Everything The Balk’s posted is the exact truth for this area, some people may not believe it or argue, but the folks in this area that have no joined the Boycott club is actually pretty impressive and something that you should realize is telling of a major issue with the way you play your game. That is one reason I have now started traveling out of the LaCrosse region in the last year to search out caches, The Balk’s pretty much quit caching altogether because of your hides and he was one of my main partners and that affects me.

I hide caches in this area, when I travel to events out of the area I hear from folks who will not cache here because of your hides, this is a detriment to my caches that I want found, I don’t go out and try to find a spot around the numerous caches you have out taking up spots for new hiders to find out that people don’t cache here and that my hides won’t get the found logs I want.

Like The Balk’s say, we in the area welcome your hides if they are findable, maintained and legal, but a majority of folks in the coulee region have finally had the last straw. Me, I’m leaning their way, yes I have issues with your hides at times but you also have some very creative hides that are great but over time they deteriorate due to lack of attention and give the area a bad name.

I’m kind of wondering why this thread remained actually.. considering that the thread by Putterizer got warned for almost calling out a member. If anyone wants to learn more look on facebook for the coulee region cacher group and see the threads that I have left standing to try to eliminate some of the spillover and handle it in our area.

VTS, you are welcome back to our group at anytime to discuss things and learn the issues, you have missed alot on the issues and people questioning your actions.

Awesome, thanks for the lists. I knew there had to be some out there!

in reply to: Snow Shoes #1956718

Redfeather is made in LaCrosse so you are supporting a Wisconsin company. I will say that I did get some snowshoes for the kids and wife from Menards that were cheap and work well for the little bit they do use them.
Like previously said, go bigger and get quality if planning to use alot.

in reply to: recent geocaching update (2-12) #1956609

There still is the google map view on the cache page and if you click google map in the maps section it kicks it over to Google.
I’m not happy either with the OSM maps, but over time they’ll improve if we add our data, I’ll miss the sat view though.
