I know I’d be up for it if I owned one, it is on the list of toys to get eventually.
I like some of the suggestions offered so far, as I’ve debated this point myself and couldn’t come up with anything decent. Although I do know of a couple cachers that found bar chips on a hot summer day and made use of them shortly afterward!
T/B, I have the same sentiment, I did maintenance on one of my caches this pass week and I found a movie stub in there as swag!! And it didn’t even have a coupon on the back for anything.. bummer.Scenic? try the along the bluffs (Hixton Forest or Grandad’s). Cross the river to LaCrescent to do Trekkin and Birdin’s AMS series that will give you a workout.
I have some caches about twenty miles down river on the Minnesota side that have some nice scenery also. Be warned that LaCrosse has a ton of micros and some are not maintained well, loads of park and grabs along with some that will make you tear your hair out because of the insanity of the hide.
The Experimental Forest off county II and SH162 out near Bangor/West Salem has some nice hiking caches also.If you don’t know the name of the land owner and have no way of contacting them I’d call the DNR.
Not to steal the topic as yes, I am interested in an event around photography (always lugging the big camera around).
Already thinking about a fall event and definitely next spring! I may just be the event organizer for the area yet…Back on topic, wonder if you had a scavenger hunt of different items folks would need to photograph to win a door prize? We did that for the kids youth group and they had a blast watching for things that they normally ignore in passing.
Oh, Surrreee… T&B can’t make my my event just down the road but can already speak for an event in the planning.. (Dripping with sarcasm here) 😉
As someone that always has a camera at the ready when caching this type of event draws my attention, unfortunately our summer is filling up quickly.
Not to be a party pooper, but make sure you check the guidelines and knowledge book on the Earthcache site.
From their knowledge book:3.5 EarthCache Types That Have Been Widely Used
Some types of Earthcaches have been widely used. New submissions may be accepted if they provide an excellent Earth science lesson.Waterfall Classification: We no longer accept EarthCache submissions featuring the various types of waterfalls with a logging task asking to identify the type of waterfall at a particular location. Waterfall EarthCaches with specific information about the local geology and related logging tasks are acceptable.
Artesian Wells/Springs: A general description of how an artesian well or spring forms will not be accepted. The EarthCache should include details about the geological conditions that caused the artesian well/spring to be formed at the selected location.
Glacial Erratics: We are currently seeing many submissions for glacial erratic boulders as the basis for EarthCaches. We have decided that we will no longer publish these EarthCaches unless you provide an excellent Earth science lesson and related logging tasks. No longer acceptable will be logging tasks that just ask for dimensions of erratic blocks, or the calculation of the weight of the blocks. You need to work a lesson around the specific site that relates the geology of the blocks to the surrounding geology and some task that links those blocks to the action of the glaciers that brought them here. This will require you to be innovative.
I only know that from the Iowa Geocaching site that the directive for the erratics tightened up recently, to me while Earthcaches are great if done correctly they are getting to the point that I don’t want to consider even doing one anymore or doing them anymore. Any ways back on topic..
Congrats Dave!! The force is with you!
Thanks everyone! It’s one way to keep the kids active, and right now I’m trying to shake the cobwebs out of the legs for hiking.
I have the 20mm ammo can as shown on this page:
http://www.ammocans.net/ large enough to put books in.I have a huger ammo can out in my yard currently, it sat there all winter and is still dry even after me blowing tons of snow on it. And no it isn’t a cache yet, just waiting for better weather to activate it.(and the kids to clean the yard..) Back on topic, I’ll check later to see what size it is.
Going to affect a few snowmobile trails also, I imagine since the rules for wildlife refuges are pretty similar that it will be alot like what we have here for the Upper Mississippi Refuge in that alot of activities are prohibited.
Nope, tried the profile link at the bottom of the posts before I posted it, thought it may be because we don’t have the profile filled out but mine doesn’t work either and I made sure I had it. All I get is this module isn’t active saying and a go back option. Sorry to create more work for you..
Profile’s aren’t active, but I’m thinking that is because nobody has created one yet. Also, on the old board the name of the poster would be a link to their WGA profile and then a link to GC and that doesn’t happen now. Would be something for a future update, I am liking the look and the speed of the new site. Guess you could always do the once a month updates like GC does and keep us on edge on the bug fixes and new rollouts!
Good thing they are in Florida… how are you going to maintain them for the reviewer to approve them down there when you live up here?? Hehe!! 🙄
