I don’t have Hoyt Park saved, but it’s pretty close to home and I should be able to get over there and grab the coords for you.

in reply to: Facebook groups versus the WGA website? #1974564

I try and come on the site daily if possible because when I got into caching, I found the WGA and the first cachers I met and learned from came through these forums. I’m also on FB and the various groups there and honestly it’s easy to connect with people there since most the notifications that I get are from caching related groups or caching friends.

One thing that would be nice and possibly regenerate some of the traffic here is some sort of “chat” feature. I’m a member of GONIL and they have a weekly chat on Tues nights. It’s nice to stop in and say hi to friends I’ve met in the Chicago area over the years or if I’m planning an outing in that direction. To be fair, I have no idea about the cost/effort to get something like that going, but other than the WGA, GONIL and their chat is the only group I keep up with regularly.

Simple answer = CITO, more local CITO events cover events to bring members together as well as a direct LNT impact.

Long answer = Develop a relationship with LNT. As far as I know, David (CacheNoTrace) is the entirety of LNT in WI. Why not try and use him as a resource to bridge geocaching to Leave No Trace and move forward. The WGA is full of members who are avid outdoorsfolk and I have to believe there is a potential benefit to LNT for working with us. Educational information, workshops, and training could all be available to us. Plus being partnered with LNT could help the group in our dealings with the DNR and other agencies. Our public image being more than a group of crazy people playing a “game” can’t hurt.

proactively working with gov’t – DOT, DNR, law enforcement to build relationships

financial health of org – promoting new revenue (possibly partnering with geocaching retailers), recordkeeping

community relations – local CITO, Geo 101 including promoting these events to the general public and not just cachers

in reply to: Membership trend #1973990

I can’t say for certain, but have to believe that economics & spare time are the two biggest factors in the decrease. This hobby can be quite time & $$ intensive especially for those of us that are “addicted”. I feel like the core membership have similar traits in that we like to travel and explore and the WGA provides a network of friends and contacts spread across the state.

I agree with Steve, local “Meet the BOD” type events would hopefully generate interest and allow those cachers that don’t have the time, energy or money to travel across the state to get involved more. Another idea I’ve kicked around a bit is some WGA-sponsored adventures. When I think of some of the best caching trips I went on the last year or two, most of them included other active WGA members, but all were organized outside of the site. We have tons of great caches that have 10, 20 or more people watching them. Maybe something like this would motivate people to come and make a day or weekend of it.

I think of the GONIL group organizing a group ride along the SPPT power trail that included probably close to 40-50 people including dutchlandian (Ans is from The Netherlands), or zuma’s Power Island trip which was practically a WGA event in MI, or Road to Camelot series in Iowa. Why shouldn’t we facilitate caching trips along with events and CITOs?

in reply to: Candidates: making WGA events memorable #1974066

Unfortunately, I think the situation is not going to go away as most people want to get out and find caches or boost their numbers and events almost always come with new caches.

One thing I would like to see is maybe some short ‘workshops’ on various caching topics; camo, puzzle-solving, hosting events, etc. Maybe let the members have some input on what they would like during the planning phases of events.

Another item that would personally interest me is a designated coin/tag/sig item trading area. This would allow the crazy coiners among us an area to congregate and share our goodies with others.

in reply to: Garmin or Magellan? #1974060

My primary GPSr is the 60CSx, its been a workhorse and I haven’t had any problems with it, so when the time comes I’ll probably go with Garmin again. My iPhone is my backup as it lets me have access to caches I may have missed loading almost everywhere.

in reply to: WGA Cache Page Banners #1974001

Most if not all of my caches have the banners on them. It’s easy enough to put in and provides exposure for the organization, so win-win for me.

I’m going to be different and unfortunately say “no”. I’ll be in Cheezehead land for a family ski trip that weekend. 🙁
