Bad Robot just moved over 5,000 miles! I decided to make good use of my French and convince someone to go rescue Bad Robot so that he could finish the race strong. He is now posed to travel even more if some kind geocacher decides to visit the island of Maldives soon. He is very near the International Airport there. Less than three weeks to penning the winner’s name on the trailer….it’s not over yet!

Since this thread has gone in a direction away from souvenirs, I will comment on the most recent discussion. The “Cheesy Well-Rounded” challenge is one of the original “true” challenges out there. It was placed with the requirement that caches needed a certain publication date to eliminate the possibility that new caches would spring up that would be grid-fillers for this challenge.
And that happens all the time. There are now grid-filler power trails, where cachers can get every rating they need. Even GC has just now “helped” people meet challenges requiring a certain number of souvenirs, or certain streaks. I would disagree with the idea that the early caches might not have the correct D/T ratings because “back then”, D/T ratings reflected pretty much what one had to go through to find the caches. Now, D/T ratings are often fudged to fill holes in a grid, and this even happens with events nowadays.
If people become “cheesy” W-R cachers, they can take pride in the fact that they filled their grids by finding some decent caches that were placed to bring people to certain locations, not to fill grid holes. In its infinite wisdom, GC no longer allows date requirements on challenges, thus watering down the game even more.
Not everyone is meant to find every cache or complete every challenge. It is doubtful that we will ever become well-rounded, cheesy or not. Some caches we don’t enjoy doing, and if we can’t find a cache to fill a grid hole that we would enjoy, then that hole will stay empty. Caching is not a job but a leisure activity. We’re not going to kill ourselves just to get certain smilies.
I agree that this is an awesome challenge cache. There is no way you can just accomplish this one overnight. You really have to work and plan to fulfill the requirements of this challenge. I won’t have this one completed for awhile yet, but we will have fun searching out some of these oldies!

What do you have left? I have 10 of them and have dug up the caches for them, just need friends for the adventures! 8)
My list is at home, but a lot of what I still need is the higher terrain. The only difficulty I have completely done is 2. I’ll look when I get home from Chicago. What 10 do you need?
I’ve never understood that challenge. Could someone explain it to me in English? It sounds like simply filling in your d/t grid with caches that were published before October 2008, and you must have found all 9 types of caches, again published before 10/08, and then something about cheese that I couldn’t understand even after reading it several times. Plus some people’s d/t grids that they uploaded don’t sort anything by date so it seems like the 2008 rule I might not have the correct understanding.
There are several things that have to happen, but the biggest part of this challenge is to find a D/T for every combination on caches that were published 10/03/2008 or before. It is a challenging, but very fun challenge.

We got it! Wasn’t too hard because we actually have quite a few nearby us that we hadn’t found – plus we traveled quite a bit in August so that made it easy also. Fun month, but would not want to do that every month.

We ended up getting 8 of them. we did not change the way we cache, don’t really care about them
I actually cached less to avoid them when possible. I think I’ve only got 4 so far and wish I could make it 0. I actually avoided reaching my 2K milestone this month simply because I didn’t want this useless crud attached to the milestone day.
The devaluation of the whole concept just grinds on me. This seems to cater to the changing demographics of the game though. It’s all about the numbers, stats, etc. and no longer about the experience.
Ahh…but keep on your to do list such caches as GC1G6CV and GCRN4J and GC7DA….
I am working on GC1GVN6. I have 60 done and 21 to go….but it is not easy finding the oldies that fit the grid spaces I need. I will have to travel…but it will be well worth it! Pretty sure the 21 I have left will each have their own adventure….which is better than a souvenir any day!
And yes, I did do a cache a day in August so I got the souvenirs….perhaps I can sell them on Craig’s List some day!

I confess to collecting every one of them as well, despite a general feeling that making souvenir collection so easy to do manages to find a way to devalue something that did not have much value to start with.

I am sure there will be a challenge sometime in the future that you can only log if you earned a souvenir every day of the same month. So perhaps it will be useful for something!

Personally, the greatest reward for me is bragging rights….and of course, the fun trash talk that goes on throughout the year, so I voted for option #1. However, I think that paying $3 per travel bug is just fine also and I would be more than happy to do that.
However, if Jim sends out 30 travel bugs, I will be forced to send out 31, which would cost me $93. I am not sure how Mr. Lacknothing would feel about that. 🙄

So, really yes, you can take it with you to Paris or wherever. First drop must be at the picnic and if you leave it on the table, it may or may not be picked up before you leave. Both of my racers from year one left the table about halfway through the event.
Do I have to put it on the table? Can’t I bring it to the picnic and keep it in my pocket? I think it has severe allergies..

Sometimes I take a date and sometimes I just leave him home.

I don’t know how people cache using only smartphones. They just don’t seem all that accurate to me. I use my “varmint” also and load it from GSAK. However, like beccaday, I like to use my smartphone to read cache pages (especially for earthcaches), hints and of course, the ability to load previous logs. Let’s face it, sometimes it helps to go back and read all the logs. And it is nice also to be able to look up caches when you have changed a route or just find yourself in a place where you hadn’t planned to be and of course are thinking, “I wonder if there is a cache here.” I love my “varmint”.

I absolutely love the Kickapoo Valley….some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. And of course, Highway 131 on my motorcycle – life does not get much better. I have actually tried counting how many times you cross the Kickapoo River on that highway, but I always lose count.

If you find a cache in another country, you get a souvenir for that country. Do people from other countries get a U.S. souvenir? Why don’t we get one for the U.S.?We do – in the form of the 50 state souvenirs.

You cannot take your own TB with you over the next year, but you could stash mine in your carry on bag and drop it in a cache on your trips.
Can’t I just drop it in a cache in Paris? Come on Barry….seriously?

The 1st Picnic to Picnic TB Race is coming down the home stretch! The field has dwindled from 47 racers to less than 47 racers! Who will take the checkered flag?
With that said, it’s time to plan your entrant in the 2nd Annual WGA Picnic to Picnic Travel Bug Race. There will be TB Tags and WGA Travel Tags available at the picnic. Just bring along something to attach to your trackable and VROOOOOM! Your off!
See you at Governor Thompson State Park on September 21st!
I will NOT miss this this year. Last year I was in Russia. I will be there and I will win! Starting the trash talk already. I have trips planned to Burkina Faso, Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Paris this next year!
I am cheering for Bad Robot to come on strong this last month. You can do it Bad Robot…you can do it!
