I hope this means you are planning on buying a few more from me Bec?

Almost. But seeing as how it is now 2007 and we are planning the next camp-out, I felt I needed to divest myself of what profits there were so far. I plan on trickling the last few out onto eBay, so there will be another smaller check arriving whenever I finally run out of them.

Just to be clear, this was in no way a monetary donation on my part. All my costs were subtracted out – the check I sent was pure profit. The only thing I donated was time. 8)

Now….what coin are we going to make for 2007? 😈

I’ll be helping Hotdogs off trail and natloh2 this coming weekend with a live presentation at a cub scout event.

Dress warmly, guys. I hear we are expecting highs in the single digits.

Also I do not advocate group training using listed geocaches. So having some containers for temporary hides helps as well, though since they are temp, even cheap food storage containers will work.

Probably wise, especially if kids are involved.

I don’t think it will be hard to get GPSrs. I know I have an older one I would donate and I’m sure there are plenty of members like me out there. Buying a projector should be no big deal and the information in presentation form is out there – we would just need to put something together without the need to reinvent the wheel.

I could see a volunteer committee taking the reins of coordinating the presentations. Sounds like fun to me. 8)

Oh yeah, that. I look forward to seeing some of them. 🙂

Cute title, Puppies! What are some of the other ones?

We along with several other members have personal coins coming out in about a month that are in the shape of records.

Sounds cool – save me one! Will it be trackable? I’d like to have a CimenaBoxers as well. I haven’t started the process for my 2007 coin yet, but there will be one.

This would be no small undertaking. I think we would need to see a huge amount of support from the members before I could vote “yes”.

I’m with Brian on this one. I’m not sure that ultimately paying the state at least $3500 and possibly more for this is in the WGA’s best interest.

Sure, I would love to get one myself if they were available. But I think that $3500 would be better spent someplace else.

It’s clear a lot of people like to get “credit” for finding event temps or even just keep track of how many event temps they have found even if they don’t log them all. That’s understandable – at the WGA picnics I’ve attended it’s no small feat to find all the temps – you may end up hiking 5 or 10 miles to get them all. I think this could be a good compromise that would still motivate people to find the temps even if they don’t get the smilie.

My thoughts exactly. I would like to keep track of them in my stats just because I work hard for them – I don’t care if they show up in my total find count. But of course I don’t begrudge the people who do want to count them. There just has to be a better way of dealing with it. *sigh*

Promotion: I think we should grow the membership as much as possible. Simply put – more members in our rosters means more pull with the authority-type organizations we interact with (such as the DNR, parks departments, and police departments).

Education: Again, more is better. We need to educate the police and the public so there are less bomb scares and fewer incidents like what happened in Appleton last year.

Demographics: I think the WGA attracts a pretty broad range of geocachers already. There are some demographic types that aren’t much interested in geocaching. But among those that are, it seems our membership is pretty well representative.

My history: Back in 2002, I was doing some web surfing and somehow wound up on the GC.com website. Then I got a GPSr for Christmas that year, but I put it aside for about 15 months. 😳 Spring of 2004, I finally got it out and learned how to use it.

I’ve gone back and changed some attendeds to notes and I have thought about the fact that this does sort of mess up the milestones. But in my mind, the milestone happened when that magic number appeared on that cache page. And I don’t think anybody but me cares about what cache that happened to be.

The logging police on the groundspeak forum get a kick out of riling everybody up this way. They keep bringing it up because they like the controversy and the stroking they receive from their forum cronies. Until GC.com actually addresses the issue, they are best ignored. Although people on the other side of the argument should continue to let Groundspeak know how they feel about it.

It looks to me like the northern tier is getting a lot more activity than the southern.

in reply to: Wisconsin gets toasted again #1769100

Last year when this subject came up, I suggested an alternative in the Groundspeak forum. Why not make temp-finds / multiple attended logs like benchmarks? They could show up on the profile on a seperate line, but not increase the find count. (In other words, your first event log would increase your count, but the rest would not.) Well, that was my idea anyways and like all other helpful suggestions about this topic, GC.com has chosen to ignore it. It looks like they are hoping that the situation will just eventually go away (but it won’t) and I too am disappointed by their attitude about it. They could fix it so easily by just doing something – anything!

    As for me ….

    (a) It doesn’t bother me what other people do, this is just for fun and it’s up to them.

    (b) I use to log the temps, then I stopped … it was just a lot of “busy work” on the computer (especially with my 26k connection out in the country).

    (c) More and more I look to events as meeting the people and less about finding the temps … just the way I’m feeling about it.

My opinion about events has evolved in the same way.

    wow

    😳 Don’t embarrass me – I know I have a problem.

Hi, my name is Jennifer and I’m addicted to geocoins.

I could get behind zuma’s idea about having smaller campouts during the year in various regions. This will bring people to areas they haven’t been before. When individuals have hosted things like this, it has worked extremely well. Should the WGA host some as well? I don’t know, but it is worth exploring. We are limited in what parks we can use for the two big events. Having multiple, smaller events would allow us to visit some of the smaller parks as well. But the people on the board can only do so much. Perhaps this would be something where we could set up regional committees to actually run the things.

Personally, I try to cache in a new part of the state a few times a year. I hope to get way up north at least once next summer.

in reply to: Question for the Membership: Did you read this? #1768856

Well, I read it of course. And yes, there is a lot to wade through right now in this forum. But I hope people are spending a bit of time educating themselves so they can best pick the people who represent their opinions. Don’t want this to be a popularity contest.

In my life right now, volunteering IS my job. I spend one day a week at the wildlife center. The science fair board requires one morning a month and one weekend a year (I spend a lot more time on it, but on no set schedule – the jobs get done whenever I need to get them done). My kids have activities a lot on weekends, but I can work around that when needed. I also donate some of my time to my religious organization during the year. But again nothing I can’t work around. As I mentioned somewhere else, my obligation as Pack Committee Chair and Assistant Den Leader for my son’s cub scout pack ends next month, so I see no problem with my picking up a new responsibility at this time.

I usually visit the forums once or twice a day. If I’m traveling or camping, I often take a much-needed break from the computer during that time. But I’m never gone for more than a week – almost always it’s about 4 days that I am away. And that occurs about once a month.
