Wow. Some people sooooooo miss the point of The Gauntlet (edit: I’m not referring specifically to you, Brian). The cache was all about cameraderie and the ability to laugh at yourself.

I have great memories from that day. Going in, I figured there was an element of the liar’s cache involved, but I was still geared up for a good bushwhacking multi. As I was putting a bunch of stuff on me and my son, Bec was there watching us with concealed amusement (she had been totally tipped off I now realize). We headed over, found it, and had a good laugh. Then we all spent the rest of the day caching in a beautiful part of the state and coming up with stories for our logs. Finding an ant on my leg turned into getting swarmed by a nest and bitten. Bec’s sneezing a few times from allergies turned into a race to the hospital in near anaphylactic shock. My son and I still talk about it.

But I knew this day would come eventually. The Gauntlet was a victim of its own success – there was just no way a cache could be built up so far like this without something causing it to tumble down. Such a shame.

Cool. I did a little intro to GPS and geocaching with one of my son’s denmates after camp last summer, but it would be fun to do something with more boys involved.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I don’t know of anyone who hasn’t somehow been touched by this disease.

Oh yeah… and after it gets REALLY cold out there you can go for stuff like these and you shouldn’t need a boat. Just make sure the ice is think enough!!!!!!!!!!

Ahh, the rivers are already starting to get a glaze on them. Maybe this is the year I finally cross Carpe’ Cache’ off my list!

    Oh – I hope I didn’t just jinx myself! 😯

Some of my best geocaching memories have occurred in the winter, especially after a big snowfall makes everything look so beautiful. I love bundling up and heading out into the cold.

The only time I have logged a cache without signing the logsheet happened on a particularly frigid day. I wouldn’t have been out except I knew the cache was about to be archived and it had been on my to-do list for a while. It was so totally encased in ice, there was no way I was getting it open without an acetylene torch. So I propped my signature item next to it and took a picture that I submitted. The cache owner allowed it fortunately. 😀

On a side note, I’ve heard of people using metal detectors when the snow is deep…

Wow – $20 is rather painful, but it does include the custom engraving.

At least playing the game is free (unless you count all that gas I used)! 😀

One more requirement to go and I can’t do it until tomorrow morning. Then finally I can concentrate on other things – like Christmas or whatever….

The little block of letters on the 16th piece is the key to solving a code that you can find on the map. Look at the two thingies next to and above the numbers. They look like something else on the map that you may have thought were mere decoration before.

Don’t bother solving the obvious “codes” on the map, except for fun. They won’t help you.

    Just waiting to log them.
SO far I have been able to log 3.
My case picks can only get better.

Nope no such luck…I have picked 48, 28, 20 and 24 hours. Stick a fork in me : I’m done. What is the point of playing a game where you do everything right but fate shoots you in the foot. I’m a big fat quitter.

Kind of angst-y for someone who wound up 35th overall! 😉

I will be entering my 13th at 2:30 this morning. All you finishers can lay in your cozy beds and dream about me – sitting at my computer hoping the karma will smile upon me for my efforts and reward me with a decent case for once. Yeah, right.

But seriously, it’s great that the Wisconsin contingent has done so well this time! Congrats to all the finishers so far!

I have yet to log a single cache since the 1st 3 are not around my area. Don’t have the time yet to make a trip just for caching.

You do know that you don’t have to do them in order, right?

in reply to: New game starting Sat from Caching Place #1766911

I just logged my 11th and pulled a 42 hour case. With being away from a computer during Thanksgiving travels and my awful luck with the suitcases, my hopes of finishing in the top 100 are completely dashed. But the fun part for me is the planning of the cache runs and of course finding them! These quests always get me out finding caches I probably would not have done otherwise, so it is all good.

Wow!!! Bec is due to be the next finisher but she is 3 hours delayed!!! What’s up? I wonder if she had to go to work before she could solve the final puzzle. It would be a shame if she lost a top 10 finish just because she had to go earn a living or something.

GCP3GB Kettle Moraine Earthcache. I’ve been up there a bunch of times but haven’t bothered to claim it as a find yet but I could go up there and take my picture for my 100th. This is an acceptable standby if nothing else really special comes up it’s like 3 miles from my house.

GCG50T Marsh Master has been on my list for a long time but the maintenance seems iffy. I do have it all scoped out remotely and I’m ready to go. It is a 4.5/3 so it might be memorable. (Oh yeah the 100th defiantly has to be dog friendly. I can’t do it without my dog friend.)

GCM9VR Oak-K Either Way along with
GC1439 Ottawa Panorama These are long hard walks on the ice age trail. I’ve already done a 100 miles of these so these might sum up my experience so far but probably wouldn’t be too exciting otherwise.

Well, since you asked about them……

I think an earthcache is worthy of a milestone because there are so few of them.

Marsh Master: I did this one over two years ago. As it was originally set up, it would have been very cool to do. Now, even though all the pieces are still there, it is not in great shape. And you must enjoy serious bushwhacking. I would do it to cross it off your list, but not as your 100th.

Oak-K Either Way: The waypoints are nice, the final is huge, and you already know it is a long walk in Kettle Moraine. (We cheated and drove to the final.) If this is your caching style, then it may be appropriate. (I haven’t done Ottawa Panorama).

You have done Pain in the Cache. Too bad. Definitely milestone-worthy. 😉

I can also recommend High Brass. Very fun, the hides get more creative and more difficult…

We did Goosey XXII for our 100th. And we were just talking about it today as a matter of fact. But it may be more urban than what you are looking for.

in reply to: New game starting Sat from Caching Place #1766902

I was confused by that as well.

First you must have the coded journal printed off. Then as you get each piece of the “puzzle”, you will find something on the piece that looks out of place – a letter for the first two, then words on the others. The letter or word is the key to decrypt each corresponding line in the journal.

Did that clear anything up or just make it muddier?
