I was afraid I might have a conflict, but the day has cleared for me. How could I miss a picnic that’s practically in my back yard?

With the exception of winter, I don’t think we’ve ever cached in southern Kettle Moraine without picking up a couple ticks. Be prepared! 😈

    Hi David,
Welcome back πŸ˜€ The last week in July might actually work for us – especially the first half of the week.

BTW, interested in another geocoin swap?

Nominate it anyway! Then it will get on the Honorable Mention list. It might get a few more visitors then….

Looks like an August release this year.

Awesome! I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have Wicket along to help sometimes. πŸ˜‰

I do not see restricting newbies as bringing any improvement to the game. Nor do I see a rating system as being a positive influence. I believe that if we want to see improvement in the quality of our caches, then we need to extol the virtue of those that are good. Cache-of-the-Month, honorable mention list, favorites lists go a long way toward achieving this end. LetÒ€ℒs try to put more emphasis on what is being done right and relegate admonishments to e-mail rather than the forums.

That pretty much sums up the opinion of Jeremy Irish as well. A rating system has an inherent problem in that different people like different kinds of caches. Think about the differences of opinion we’ve seen on these kinds of caches: micros, long hikes, puzzles, cemeteries, just to name a few. People who hate them are going to give them low scores, people who love them will do the opposite.

Now think about if there was a ratings system in place and someone set out a mediocre cache. I think it would be a rare person indeed who would take a low rating as merely constructive criticism and not get defensive or offended. That just won’t generate any good will, especially for newbies who would feel judged and have their new-found enthusiasm squashed like a bug.

We just need to continue setting a good example by placing quality caches and letting the cream rise to the top through the methods mentioned before.

BTW, there was some mention of some of these becoming permanent caches. When will we find out about the details?

One problem I ran into is stamps that wont let go of the paper. Each cache has a stamp that cuts a hole into the paper. About 25% of the time the stamper grabs the paper and wont let ya retrieve your paper without tearing it. If ya run into this problem, the solution is to take the bottom of the stamper off, and use a pen to push the stamper blades up.

Keep On Cachin In The Free World.

I found that using a hard flat surface to punch on, such as my clipboard, solved this problem.

With everything going on in the Chippewa Valley last week, we only managed to have time for 6 or 7 of them. But we got our book turned in and received our very nice commemorative coin. Thanks for all your work on this Kent (and everyone else)! We look forward to it again next year.

My only suggestion is to have it go longer into the summer. There was only a week there after school was out to go get some done. More time would have been excellent! But maybe I was the only one with this issue.

Memorable caches for us fall into one of three categories (with examples off the top of my head):

    1. Unique hiding technique (ex: Mr. Larrabee’s Ghost, Metamorphosis).

    2. Unique location – this can be either a spectacular spot (ex: Peewee’s Small Falls, Officers Scenic Cache) or perhaps something interesting about the local history that can be learned there (ex: The Yellowstone Trail series, Mounds Abound, Inner City Surprise).

    3. Fun theme or puzzle (ex: Lateral Thinking, Candy Cane Lane).

Of course not every cache can be truly memorable. But it is my hope that future hiders will at least consider the uniqueness of thier hides before throwing another film canister in a tree. It seems whenever I talk to a cacher from out of state, they always rave about the quality of Wisconsin geocaches. Let’s keep it that way!
