Thanks for the link, but I’d already found the service center addresses. The page I remember listed the wildlife areas and the name of the manager – no search capabilities or anything, just a long list. I’m not sure if every wildlife area was there, but every one I had looked for before was listed. I’d looked up the Brooklyn area shortly before the website change to make sure the same person was still the manager. Oh well, hopefully it will be back soon, and in the meantime I’ll use another way to get the manager name.

I have an Android phone with both the official Geocaching app and c:geo, plus I’ve tried some others, but I still prefer my GPS. I have an Oregon so get the description, logs, hints, etc. right on the GPS. The regular GPS is much more accurate than the smart phone, whether using the official app or c:geo. I used to prefer c:geo to the official app, but they’ve made improvements to the official one so now it’s pretty much a wash (IMO). Both are slow, both sometimes hang on me, but they both work if I need them. If I had to choose one I think I still prefer c:geo.

The wildlife area is Liberty Creek Wildlife Area, which is south of Brooklyn and could be either Fitchburg or Janesville service center, so I’m not sure which one to send it to. Also, on the blurb on the cache page I’m supposed to say who I sent the form to. What do I put if I don’t know the name of the manager?

janks15 has offered to get me the name of the property manager, but what should others do until the names are available again?

Thank you so much, both of you, for all the time and effort you put into this game/hobby that the rest of us get to enjoy.

I agree it’s not as much fun when you think you’ll be first to find only to find signatures from a few days before. No big deal – I don’t keep track of my ftf, but haven’t even tried for one in a few years so thought it would be fun to get one.

Back to the original topic – I was caching in northern Illinois today. I went to a park along the Rock River where there was a geocache and a terracache, both regular sized.

The geocache was less than 300 feet from the parking lot, there was an obvious geotrail to it, and a nearby hollowed out tree (not the cache hiding spot) was worse for wear. It was a tin can with the lid starting to rust shut, though everything inside was nice and dry.

The terracache was about another .2 mile hike down along the river, back past where it looked like most people fished. A nice big ammo can which hadn’t been found for about a year and a half so no geotrail at all. Lots of nice fishing themed swag inside.

I’m not saying that terracaching is better than geocaching – it’s different and has good & bad points, and a lot depends on what you like. But if you’re tired of the park and grabs and roadside caches you might want to give it a try.

I agree – why crosslist caches? It makes one of the sites redundant. That should be another pro for Terracaching – they don’t allow cross posted caches and will archive a cross listed cache if the owner doesn’t take care of it themselves. At least that site has unique caches that you won’t find anywhere else.

I’ve done TerraCaching and have 26 finds on that site (#1 in Wisconsin – WooHoo!!!). When I first started caching there were more terracaches than geocaches in the southwest corner of the state, where I am often visiting family. The concept is good, trying to get quality caches rather than the poorly placed or unmaintained caches that are often mentioned here.

    Pros –
The terracaches do tend to be hidden near interesting spots or in parks with a hike (which could be a con, depending on what you prefer).
Virtuals are still allowed and can be pretty interesting.
The points system which rewards caches that people enjoy and can remove caches that no one likes seems to cut down on poor placements.

    Cons –
Just the lack of Terracaches and terracachers is the big con. Caches often go a year or two without being found, so there’s more of a doubt that they’re actually there.
The points system which discourages cachers from posting a DNF (which hurts the cache) unless you are absolutely sure it’s missing. (Heck, I’m never absolutely sure a cache I DNF is missing.) As a result I think a lot of terracaches go missing but aren’t reported as such.
Having to be sponsored is a turn off for many people, though I’ve never had a problem getting a sponsor.

A new group of people took over Terracaching last winter/fall and they seem intent on upgrading the site and making it easier to use.

    in reply to: Waymarking #1958200

I agree that the fast food places and Walmarts etc. just clutter up the site, but some people must like them because they have waypoints out there. At least with the categories it’s not that hard to exclude them.

    in reply to: Waymarking #1958197

Yup, pretty much anything can be a Waymark, but it can be fun if you limit the categories that you search rather than getting everything in an area. For example, I love National Parks and will check for waymarks in the “NPS Passport Cancellation Station” category to help get me to the visitors center. Some of my other favorite categories are “Best Kept Secrets”, “Impact Craters”, “Oddball Museums”, and “Off Leash Dog Areas”. I only search my favorites, which cuts out the Subways and McDonalds and stuff I’m not interested in.

I hadn’t realized that there was a Fairfield East. If you’re staying there then City View 1 & 2 would be within walking distance.

A little to the east of the hotel is Burke Park with a couple of regular sized caches, Elliots Treasure http://coord.info/GC1ENVX and Bucky’s Travel Mug II http://coord.info/GC2ME2N Also to the east are a couple pretty close together – STH – Burke Station School http://coord.info/GC1NT2Q and WSQ. Sticky green things http://coord.info/GC2DV34

Nearby there is also Red Top – http://coord.info/GC2MBMY which I haven’t found yet but it does have a favorite point.

Good luck at the bowling tournament!

It’s a bit hard recommending caches when I’m not sure what you like, but I’ll give it a shot.

Badger Bowl isn’t in a very good part of town, so there aren’t many caches within walking distance, especially if you’re short on time. If you have a car and a bit of time there are a few regular sized caches to the south & west – Leopold Legacy June – http://coord.info/GCKAKE, Leopold Legacy January – http://coord.info/GCKAK3, and Til the Fat Lady Sings – http://coord.info/GC377TY. If you like EarthCaches there’s one just to the north – Madison Lakes – http://coord.info/GC1BAQ1 (full disclosure – that one’s mine). There are 4-5 micros not far from that cache, but not in the same park.

You’re kind of out of luck at Bowl-a-vard too, if you’re hoping for caches within walking distance. There just aren’t any all that close. Across the interstate City View 1 & 2 http://coord.info/GC2AHWJ http://coord.info/GC2AHX1 with nice views of the city, There are several closer into town, but I haven’t found them yet so don’t know much about them.

By the FairField Inn is Esser Pond Cache http://coord.info/GC1B31A It’s a puzzle I haven’t solved so I’m assuming that it’s nearby. Greenway Walk http://coord.info/GCR0X1 wouldn’t be too far. Madison’s Di Vine cache http://coord.info/GCWNEC, Wexford Wanderings II http://coord.info/GC2GTFN, Stricker’s Walk http://coord.info/GC27X3M, A Middleton Landmark http://coord.info/GC321CJ, and Pine Tree TB Hotel http://coord.info/GCVDAH are larger caches not toofar from Fairfield, but you would need a car.

    Hope this helps

It was nice to see the event information for the upcoming LCG|Back to the Cattails pop up in Facebook this morning.

Event reminders, COTM nominees & winners, caching stories, etc. would be good, too.

Another thing I think would be nice would be information about caching destinations. “Come to West Bend where there are nnn caches withing xx miles”, or “visit beautiful yyy park near Chippewa Falls where you can see a beautiful waterfalls and lots of caches”, things like that. If someone wanted a weekend get away it could be a source for good caching destinations and a way for locals to highlight their area.
