Challenge.gsk will put the page number in userdata or user2 – you choose which.

in reply to: Delorme macro #1951896

Challenge.gsk will list the pages and whether or not you have a cache for that page, then show a map in Google Earth.

Mapdelorme.gsk will also create a map but not list matching caches.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is just north of I90 on the east side of Gary IN. Big sand dunes along the Lake Michigan shore.

If you’re looking for a break to stretch your legs then Luensman Overlook Park in New York is a nice little park not too far from I90. There are 5 or so caches in the park, including this one: A View of Canada http://coord.info/GCP1RF.

Rock City is a really cool area, but it might be a bit too far off I90 – http://coord.info/GC14G5J

    Have fun on the trip.

in reply to: PQ for caches along a route? #1951020

When you got the “unknown file” error was it when you were trying to upload a route file? I’ve gotten that before with an upload when it was the wrong .gpx version or there was something else wrong with my route (too long, too many waypoints).

If it was an old PQ that you’ve run before does it run against a route you’ve uploaded or a public route that someone else had uploaded? Could the route have been deleted in geocaching.com so your old PQ cold no longer find it?

in reply to: SWAG for grownups? #1949285

I like the mosquito wipes idea. I’ve looked for them in stores but haven’t found them anywhere yet.

Foreign coins (preferably not Canadian or Mexican) are swag that I’ll usually trade for – even if it’s just a different foreign coin I leave in return. It’s almost like a little virtual trip to that country, holding the coin in my hand.

Great video – thanks for sharing it

in reply to: What’s the Deal with your User Name? #1914812

My username (lmcgisme) is the same I use for almost everything – an old, old, username from back in the day when you could use only eight characters with no spaces or special characters, and just lower case. Trying to come up with a unique AOL username without doing the usual ‘just add numbers’ I came up with lmcgisme –
    L for my first initial
McG for start of last name
is me – because it’s my username and it rhymed – LMcG is me

It’s not a capital I with an Irish form of slang for a male action – although I must admit that’s what it looks like and I’d change it if I could.

If you’re a premium member and can create Pocket Queries, create one that has nothing checked except ‘I Own’. Submit the PQ, then preview the results. Up near the top, in a gray bar, is the name of the query, then links labeled [edit], , and [New Search]. Click on the link and you will see all photos uploaded with logs to your caches.

If you want to see photos on other caches’ logs you can create a bookmark of those caches, then create a pocket query of your bookmark, submit, preview, and click the link.

Please count me in also. The lime kilns in Iowa are what I’m most interested in, but would happily take any of them. I hope my number comes up!

Welcome to the sport – nice to see you here in the forums. It’s nice to see another cache hider south of Madison. Your Geokids Cache was a nice hide – haven’t been to your new one yet. I’m not too far from you, over in the Oregon/Brooklyn/Belleville area.

in reply to: New Caches in Richland Center Area #1906166

Glad to hear there will be more caches in the Richland Center area – it’s a common half-way meeting point for me and a family member. I’ll try to get out there on the 25th. Thanks for letting us know about it.

    Hi Cavecats,

    Welcome to the Madison area.

A good series you may want to look into is the Leopold Legacy series, which has caches in the parks around Dane County. There is a link to a bookmark list of the series in the ‘Bookmark Lists’ section of the WGA website (upper left). They are pretty spread out so you probably won’t want to try for them all, but they are all good caches. If you hunt GCKAKC – Leopold Legacy: May, be sure to check out the big spring(s) at the bottom of the hill on the south side. Its pretty neat to see the water bubbling up the way it does.

Furfool is right that the driftless area is more scenic than the area around Waunakee (IMHO), but you don’t have to go as far west as the Mississippi to be in it. The terminal moraine from the last ice age runs through Dane county, and the western 1/3rd or so is in the driftless area. A good earthcache to see the effect of the glacier and compare glaciated/driftess landscape is GC1BQGR – Twin Valley Terminal Moraine. Generally caches to the west will be in the driftless area, caches to the east in the glaciated area. There are not as many caches in the driftless area, but they do tend to involve a hike more-so than the ones right in/around Madison.

If you want a cache right in Madison check out GC1BM7P – CAPITOL PUNISHMENT. I haven’t done it yet, but it looks like a lot of fun and should have the history you enjoy. The building/block you will be in is the state capital building. (If you go there, State Street runs from the southwest corner of capital square to the University of Wisconsin. Mainly a pedestrian mall but buses run up and down it. Lots of different ethnic eateries and interesting shops along the street, but no caching).

A Madison cache with a hike and a good view: GC1EEC – Picnic Point Cache

Some other Madison Area/Dane County caches I’ve liked (in no particular order):

    GC1GQ2M – Token Springs & GC1GTZZ – Deeper into the Conservancy…
GC14GW5 – The Bridges of Six-Mile Creek (Right in Waunakee)
    GCWBNR – WaunaCache #1
GCYBZJ – Giant’s Glen (a bit farther west, but awesome view!)

These are a bit south of Madison, so may be farther than you want to drive:
    The Rock (GC6670)
    Sweet Dreams (GCR1T4)
    Tunnel of Terror!!! (GCYQAX)
Magnolia Bluff (GC65B) & spelunking in magnolia (GCQRXZ)
    Dane County Mountain Climbing (GCVENG)

All the above are just my opinion and your mileage may vary. I’m sure I unintentionally left out many great caches. As to what to watch out for – the area around Waunakee can be low and marshy – bring boots. And watch out for the politicians.

I hope you enjoy the caching.

I don’t suppose there is a program out there that will automatically calculate the best route to hit all the caches in a list, is there? I’m thinking the Indiana Challenge might be doable over a weekend.

    Decrepit,
If you use GSAK there’s a macro that will calculate the next nearest cache in a group of caches so you can do a cache raid. The macro is called ‘Cache Raid’ and there’s more info here:

I dropped my three while on our cruise. One we dropped in Cozumel and its been picked up with the cacher planning to drop it in Denmark. Another we left in Grand Cayman, it was picked up and they plan to drop it in Kansas, but neither have been dropped yet. The third is still in a cache in Honduras – hopefully it will be picked up soon.

in reply to: Eau Claire night caches? #1884333

I have a bookmark list of night caches in Wisconsin (on the WGA website – caches by type), but the only one I have around Eau Claire is Mr Larrabbee’s Ghost. Am I missing some in the area?
