The green color means there’s been activity in the last two weeks. The smiley face means a cacher has it, a box means that its in a cache.

I haven’t had a missing TB show up again after a long time, but I found one that had been missing for two years. Love2Jeep1 was started out in the Black River Falls forest in July, 2006. After the initial drop there were no logs for the TB until I found it in Richland Center in July 2008. All I found were the tags and chain – I’m not sure if there ever was anything attached because there were no pictures of the bug. Its now out traveling as it was meant to do.

in reply to: Looking for recommendation near EauClaire #1895131

Another area you might want to check out is Lowes Creek County Park, south of Eau Claire, just on the other side of I94. There are about 20 caches there, hidden by a variety of cachers, so there are different hide styles and types. I think there’s only one parking area (locals please correct me if I’m wrong) so it means hiking through a beautiful park to get them all. I can’t remember for sure if bikes were allowed or not on the trails, but I seem to think they were allowed on at least some of them (locals please correct me if I’m wrong, again).

I had a great time caching that area last May. Most caches were regular sized, well spaced out (not a like power trail), and it was great to park & hike instead of driving from cache to cache.

in reply to: Log DNF’s #1894478

I’ll log all of my DNF’s, even if I gave up early for some reason. I just give the reason in the log so others know that it wasn’t a thorough hunt, so chances are good its still there. Actually even with a thorough hunt chances are good that its still there when I DNF. Right now I’m running just under 10% DNFs, with some of those being multiple logs on the same cache.

in reply to: Hotel – Bong State Recreation Area #1894187

I can’t recommend a specific hotel, but I’d suggest using Wyndham Rewards to search. You don’t have to enroll in the rewards program to do a search, and they cover several chains like Super 8/Days Inn/Howard Johnson/Baymont, etc. After putting in your dates and getting a list you can refine your search to ‘Pets Allowed’, non-smoking, other options & get a map of the locations, the rates, and other info so you can call the hotel directly if you see one you’re interested in and don’t want to enroll in the program. Super 8 & Days Inn are both pretty good about allowing pets.

We travel quite a bit & are always looking for a reasonably priced, decent hotel that allows pets in non-smoking rooms – plus has free wireless internet, so I don’t think you’re asking too much.

in reply to: Madison Area #1892873

Although I’m from the greater Madison area I don’t know the west side very well and unfortunately don’t have the summer off, so I wouldn’t be much help. Another cacher you may want to contact through gc.com is CommanderUSN, who is from the west side of Madison and enjoys meeting and caching with others.

in reply to: TBs or Geocoins to go East / N. Virginia #1891792

I retrieved a TB last week in Wisconsin that has a goal of staying on and exploring the Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia) peninsula, so it would be great to get it back to that part of the country. How long will Ladybug1 be in the area, and how can I get the TB to her?

I’ll try to help out, but sometimes on the web when trying to give html examples the browser converts them to the display link, not displaying the actual code used to get it to do that. I have external links on a few of my cache pages and the code that worked for me was:

    the text you want displayed

The example below is the actual code I see when I edit the cache page. The url starts with http:// and includes the long number/letter string, and that all goes in the anchor tag (between ‘‘). Next is the text I want to display, instead of the ugly url. In my case ‘Beefies – The Charolais (GCVNH7)’ is what you see when you view the cache page. Then put in the closing anchor tag () and you should be all set.

    Hope this helped.

One in South Central Wisconsin is Devil’s Tea Table GCD68B which will take you by an old abandoned grist mill.

Another is Old Yeller Cellar GCGQRB, near a root cellar of an old homestead.

Merry Christmas Mine Hill GC915C doesn’t have ruins, but you can see remnants of old lead mines.

    Congratulations!

in reply to: Questions from our presentation #1891389

The favorite thing I found is kind of hard to describe. It was a cute toy stuffed mouse (still with tags attached) about 6″ tall wearing a football jersey and helmet. When you pressed a button it would sing, call out cheers (u-rah-rah words, words, words) or have funny/snarky comments about the opposing team and/or coach. The thing was hilarious and I had to bring it in to work (it was dressed in red & white, like the Badgers). Everybody got a big laugh, but nobody would believe that I found it in a box in the woods.

Besides the football fan mouse thing, I’m always thrilled to find a foreign coin in a cache to add to my collection.

If you find a local Madison supply for ammo cans I’d love to learn where. I haven’t had any luck in any area stores, but did get some from WGA member, Wooden_Nickle, who’s in Verona. You can check with him – he might have some left. Good luck in your search.

in reply to: Newer Cache #1890919

This is a really nice cache in a pretty woods – funny that many of the usual suspects around Madison haven’t found it yet. If you hide a few more it will make it more worth the gas to drive down and you’ll get more visitors. There just aren’t many newer caches in the area that they haven’t gotten yet.

Has anything more been done with the map and spreadsheet for this project? I finally(!) received permission from Dane County to place an Earthcache in Prairie Moraine Park, just south of Verona. (Delay caused by permission permit falling through the cracks – not a problem with having a cache there).

I checked the Ice Age Trail website for a map, spreadsheet, or other info but didn’t find anything. Is this project still a go? Should I wait to be sure I put the Earthcache where the IAP&TF would like it, or just go ahead and place the cache?

in reply to: Placing canoe caches on/near the Mississippi? #1890013

Although it would be a great place for some caches, unfortunately I don’t think it can be done. There was one published down near Prairie du Chien that lasted for a day or two before the reviewers realized that it was in a National Wildlife area, and then it was promptly archived.
