Congratulations on closing in on 100!
I don’t know what type of caches you like, but some of my favorites near Madison (in no particular order) are:
The Rock (GC6670)
Sweet Dreams (GCR1T4)
Tunnel of Terror!!! (GCYQAX)
Magnolia Bluff (GC65B) & spelunking in magnolia (GCQRXZ)
Dane County Mountain Climbing (GCVENG)
Leopold Legacy: May (GCKAKC) – all Leopold Legacy caches I’ve done have been nice cachesHope this helps.
Our favorite park is Wyalusing SP, high on the bluffs above the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers. It has beautiful scenery, hiking trails, canoe trails, effigy mounds, historical markers, ball fields, etc. Unfortunately it has only one (multi) cache in the whole 2000 acres.
The late queries could also be caused by Yahoo.com, if that’s who you have for your email.
I was using Yahoo as my mail server and my PQs and instant notifications were coming hours, even up to a day, late. According to gc.com the PQs were run, but they weren’t showing up in my email. In the Groundspeak forums there are topics about Yahoo throttling the mail from geocaching.com, delaying delivery for Yahoo users and sometimes creating a big enough backlog to slow all outgoing email.
I just recently switched to google mail (gmail.com) and so far my PQs are showing up in my mail immediately.
If you’re the coin owner you can go to the coin’s page on gc.com and mark it as missing, which will take it out of your inventory. Its easy to grab it back if you do decide later to drop it somewhere.

If possible please try to mark caches that are listed on GC.com with the attribute of Geodog friendly.
There are very few parks in this area not dog friendly. Wakanda Park in Menomonie and Irvine Park in Chippewa Falls around the animals are the only 2 that I can think of, and that is reasonable.
zumaI think marking caches as geodog friendly – both on gc.com & in the booklet (since some won’t become gc.com caches) is a good idea. We ran into that problem after driving out to do the caches at Big Falls county park, only to have to skip them since the geodog wasn’t allowed on the trail.
This sounds like a great event – I hope we can make it up there again.

Would people travel this far to see great geographical and historical places? To get many caches in one day? To get discounts on lodging and food? Special coin, or TB? If there were a party with food, dance and prizes? How important are temporaries/permanent caches to most cachers?
While I don’t think we’d that far travel specifically to go caching, if we were planning on camping up north we may well choose one area over another based on the caches available there. In fact that’s why we picked Lake Wissota SP for camping last spring – so we could do the CVB caches.
That said, we’d prefer caches that were available for a few weeks instead of a single day event. Great geographical and historical places would be our favorite – things that show what makes your area unique. Many caches would be a definite plus – not for an easy numbers run, but so you don’t spend most of the day driving from spot to spot. Having door prizes, as someone else mentioned, is also a good idea. I liked the way CVB handled that – turn in your punch book and your name is entered for each cache punch found.
I look forward to hearing more about the event.
Just got mine yesterday, and soon it will be on its journey to Walsall, United Kingdom.
I’ve just gotten Street Atlas 2007, but haven’t had much time to play around with it yet. As Team Deejay mentioned, with the 2006 version you need to buy an additional PDA piece, but that is now included in SA2007. I was able to install it onto my PDA (Palm Z22) and download handheld maps that came with SA2007. I have not been able to create my own map and download that to my PDA. I tried for a while but didn’t spend a lot of time on it. If downloading you own personal maps to your PDA is important to you I’d verify that it can be done before purchasing the product.
I might have SA 2006 to give you, if I can find where I put the original disks. If you’re still interested I’ll see if I can dig them up.
I love night caches, and a night cache for Halloween sounds like a great idea. I have a bookmark list of all the night caches I could find in Wisconsin and nearby. Night Caches – Wisconsin & surrounding area
If anyone knows of a night cache I’m missing please let me know.
I don’t really like puzzle caches since I sit at a computer all day at work basically trying to solve puzzles. I geocache to get away from all the mental work for a while.
I do like caches that are more ‘unknown’ but marked with a puzzle question mark icon – night caches, or series where you need to find six caches to get the coordinates for the seventh, etc. I just ignore the ones that I have to think about and do a lot of work to figure out.
In the spring of 2005 I was browsing through an RV forum, reading a topic about what people liked to do when camping. Along with the usual hiking, wildlife viewing, and canoeing responses several people mentioned geocaching. It sounded like something right up my alley, so I went gc.com and entered my zip code. When I saw how many caches were close to me I ordered the gps and have been hooked ever since.
Very nice! Its good to have a Wisconsin challenge and an easy way to determine which pages you’ve done. Thanks
Now I have yet another reason to do more traveling for caching – yeah!
I think both pictures are ok – neither picture showed the hiding spot, and neither cache container was unique nor had special camouflage. My gps should get me to the pile of rocks or into the woods and the pictures aren’t showing any more than that.
If you have Delorme’s Street Atlas you can use that to create your route file. Just create a route as usual, using via points to be sure it uses the roads you want. Save the route file (may have to install advanced file features if you have a typical install) and upload that into Geocaching.com. That’s how I got Madison to La Crossevia hwy 14 instead of interstate, which is how GoogleEarth would route it.
