Here is my loyal steed from the Woodville trail Saturday morning.

in reply to: A sad note #1888703

My kids are in the same school and grade as Courtney and Zach (also in the accident and brother to Courtney) as well as another young girl who is still recovering from the accident. Courtney was a sweet girl and will be missed. My best wishes to to Zach, Steve and his family. This was a sad sad day in Oconomowoc.

It’s a step in the right direction. My thanks to the BOD.

..but I agree with Mr. Greenthumb that there should be prizes / incentives for finds at WGA events. We do have a nice tidy sum of cash that we could dip into…

in reply to: Bikers wanted: Chippewa River Trail #1888132

I have contacted a few people privately and couldn’t work things out for my first outing as I’m under some very tight time constraints. I actually didn’t plan to be on a bike trail so early this year but an unexpected trip is bringing me near Woodville.

I hope to cache along a few more bike trails in the state as time allows but likely this will not happen until winter so perhaps I’ll try to get a trip planned at that time again….with the price of gas what it is I think I will call my current trip it in as far as LONG drives in concerned (for the time being anyway). I hope to get on the trail with a few of you at some point this year.

We enjoy bike-caching. We did all the Omaha Trail Caches, as well as the few along the Sparta Elroy Trail last summer. We still have just a few left on the Chippewa Trail and look forward to doing those. Have done a few on the Root River bike trail in Minnesota and hear there will be many more coming soon, plus we are excited about heading up to the Woodville Trail.

So yes, we enjoy it! Our bikes are hybrids, not quite mountain bikes, but not skinny ones, either. Fuji, can’t remember the model. They have seen a lot of use. I ride the LaCrosse River Trail near home several times a week when the weather gets nice. Sadly, trying to get any number of caches along that trail has been a challenge due to the proximity of the active rail line nearby. There are only a few spots where one pulls away from the other enough to meet the guidelines.

Part of the reason I’m asking this question is to gage interest in bike caching and to then find out what cache rich bike trails exist in the state and perhaps encourage more caches to get developed along the trails…less car more pedal power….lots of finds.

I have some pics of my caching bike in mid action but cant seem to find them…I guess I will have to take some this weekend. Thanks for the responses.

Second point, which is a question. WHY does groundspeak allow logging “found its” at CITO events? I’m assuming for temp caches, but one of the big arguments of temp-cache-logging-detractors is that “they don’t have meet published cache guidelines.” Do CITO temp caches have to? If not, again it is an issue of consistency.

That is a really good question…but I’m tired now and this topic no longer holds interest for me. I like my stats I just wish I could compare them apples to apples with other people…sadly I cannot.

$3.75 a gallon on the way into work this morning….I’m guessing it will be higher on the way home from work….

This is why I wish Groundspeak would code something into the site to account for temp caches to make them logable.

GC.com already gives you the ability to add additional waypoints to cache listings. (e.g. Parking location, trailhead, etc.) I wish they would add a “temporary cache” type that you could add to an event cache to list all the temps, and then give you a way to log them in some fashion, and still give you a total for the number of temps that you found on your profile page

That would solve the problem permanently. Couldn’t the board put together a proposal and present it’s case directly to Groundspeak?

…well that depends on how the extra smiles are logged. I’d still not have them count towards the main find count but rather as a number of event finds (like benchmarks are logged).

I have done exactly this, although not as an official board member since I wasn’t one at the time. The suggestion was completely ignored. Now, would something coming from the WGA board carry more weight? I doubt it. It has seemed that Groundspeak’s attitude on this subject has always been along the lines of: if we ignore the problem, it will eventually go away.

I’ve always thought that treating temp caches like benchmarks, where they show up in the profile – but not the find count, would be an elegant compromise.

I too have done this a couple of times in the past few years to much ridicule on the boards on GC (which is why I rarely ever go there any more). Oh well.

I have no idea how to listen to a podcast…..I guess I’m a noob.

I’m missing the camp out this year but thinking about signing my cat and dog up with a GC account for this event…. 🙄
