Which brings up a related point…we do tailor the quality of swag to how popular we think a cache would be, to some extent.

I do. I generally offer better swag on my caches which require a longer hike or are a tricky puzzle. I also tend to refill them with decent stuff when I do a cache check. I know these caches will get found less and using the laws of statistics will therefore run into less “down traders.” Also I like to reward people willing to do the extra work.

I archived my Alien Invasion and Cacheword Puzzle caches this past month and I guess I’m guilty of not restocking them as well as I should have while doing maintenance checks. Both were filled with the largest assortment of crap…someone left a single gummy bear 🙄 I think the best we can do is to just not be “one of the bad guys” when trading. I can’t spend the time or money to refill my caches constantly, in fact I have lessened the quality of my swag on the newest caches I have placed because they fill with crap so quickly anyway. Granted the first two or three finders are usually treated to something nice (size allowing I like to put in new cable bike locks in geocaches).

I think a big part of seeking out FTF’s is due to the fact that the contents have not been been reduced to broken toys and wrappers.

30 minutes to clear just the end of my driveway after the plows went through…with a snow blower. We got a couple more inches after I last checked…must have about 11 inches now.

Unless you’re willing to place a very large order, I can’t see any reason financially why this company would care about a petition. Money talks, sorry.

I too never heard of candy raisins. Must be a local thing. Perhaps that indicates why they will cease production – poor marketing.

It is a local favorite (local to Milwaukee area). I have been eating these for as long as I can remember…and yes the company cares about one thing…MONEY. My motivation to sign the petition is to help me in obtaining closure. I feel better about losing something if I make an attempt to first save it…even a futile one.

That may be so but the subject and website has made the news and that gets exposure. I’d hate to see my favorite little golden candy go bye-bye.

in reply to: Earthcache placement questions #1886412

    Hi Lisa.

    So many questions…where to start…

Firstly, I have never had a problem with Geoaware questioning my placements. I’m sure it happens but I have not been on the receiving end of it yet. The best way to avoid most issues is to do your homework. I recommend reading a dozen or so Earthcaches and getting a feel for what is out there and how other Earthcaches are presented. You do not need to be a genius to be able to present the material. The level of the writing should be geared towards (I believe) a 14 year old. There is nothing wrong with keeping the lesson simple so long as it is well explained. More is not necessarily better. I have done a couple of LONG write-ups and a couple of short ones…I like the longer ones better personally as those were the ones I was really excited to place and I hope others would be equally excited to find and learn about. If the subject is so-so then I don’t think an over the top 12 page write up about it will capture too much attention.

As far as getting all the work done then approaching the Land Manager goes, while I always roll the dice and have it 90% complete before I approach them that doesn’t necessarily need to be the way it is done. I think in general they want to know where the person will go to visit the cache and what they will be asked to do to log the cache…measure something…take pictures….take a water sample etc. If you can have those answers ready to give to the land manager you might get the permission you need. Basically they will tell you what is needed to get their approval. This link will be helpful in figuring out who to contact:

Unique is best but as many geocachers don’t travel extensively there is room to repeat features.

Snow on almost every Friday ruining most of my planned caching expedition’s…and getting pushed out of a icy parking lot by three senior citizens when I did finally get out to brave the snow laden grounds. 😳

Is there a specific reason for this timetable other than to try to get it done quickly? The reason I ask is because I know some college students in graphic design who could work on something to submit but they’re very busy now until the end of the semester in mid-May. Could we extend the deadline until the end of June?

I have to agree with Ken on the timetable…I’d like to wait until at least such time as we can get at least 10-12 samples to choose from.

lagrac and I were in the Baraboo area, where dependent on the slope and tree cover, there could be anywhere from just patches to ankle-calf deep snow. From there, we were in Watertown, where it was largely bare but soggy in the lowlying areas.

Living only a few miles from Watertown I saw a serious melting of snow so i made my way to Baraboo as well and was surprised at how much snow was still there. I trekked through knee high snow in a couple of places there and actually “fell” off trail where the snow went up to my hip in a gorge. For the most part that area is calf high though…unless you get in an always shaded area. Still a couple more weeks for Baraboo to melt me thinks…assuming nature plays nice.
