What are your feelings about the proliferation of film cans in uninteresting urban locations, a phenomenon sometimes called “urban spew?”

Again, my opinion will perhaps go across the grain for some cachers, but who really wants to hear the expected political response all the time. I love to go on numbers runs and a big part of those runs is often finding city hides. While most of these are OK, I am disturbed by hides placed where you are forced to seek a cache in full and obvious view of the public. For example I find looking under a large bell at a busy intersection very bothersome. Not only does this type of hide attract attention from law enforcement it is a distraction to both neighbors and drivers. I think that a bit more care needs to be exercised when placing urban hides to avoid raising eyebrows and endangering our sport. Do we really need another bomb scare in the news?

Question 1. What is your position on Midwest Geobash and trying to bring it to Wisconsin? What are you willing to do personally to bring Midwest Geobash, or another mega-event to Wisconsin?
Well I’m sure this will stand as a dissenting opinion on this subject, but I’m not a huge fan of bringing it to Wisconsin. If the membership at large wants it to be brought here I would help with the planning in whatever way was asked of me but I will not make any attempts to bring it here outside of such a request.

Here’s why, and perhaps this is an unfounded concern. Like several of the BOD election candidates I too was at Geobash last year. What I saw first hand was a line of people streaming to all the local geocaches. For miles around from the event many caches had what can only be called a phenomenal number of finds. For example, GCYZVR had 145 finds on the 21st alone and 265 finds over the Geobash weekend. Personally I’m not so sure that the extra traffic to caches within say 20 miles of the event would be such a good thing. The extra traffic would no doubt cause damage and volunteer trails in wooded areas and at the very least raise the eyebrows of the neighbors for city hides. In either case I think this event actually poses a threat to local permissions due to the potential damage to parks.

The chance of local caches getting muggled increases greatly as Mr. and Mrs. Joe Public will see say 100 people walk over to a certain bush or lamp post. While I did not see any caches archived for this reason from my list of 100+ finds while at Geobash, it is a concern I have.

If I am elected to the board and it is decided that we need a mega-event I will help in the planning AND I will also work to see that caches in sensitive areas are closed for the weekend as well, but I will not actively attempt to bring such an event here without overwhelming support from the membership.

Nice work. I’m thrilled that this has finally come to pass. Didn’t we have a monthly article that used to be posted on the site…I think I recall this, but that was a few years back…but it was never really updated each month.

Maybe I can change my alliance and become a Honeybunny Groupie?

I think that would constitute an act of treason, punishable by 5 insanely difficult puzzle caches placed within 1/2 mile of your home.

…and don’t expect ammo-cans once you solve the puzzles either…oh no they will be naturally camo’d nanos hidden in clumps of tightly grouped pine trees….or worse.

Seriously though great job on even getting one of these done; it is an amazing feat.

Sunrise…who waits for sunrise? Yes, I am aware it is dark at 5 am. But I have to take advantage of the times when I can go caching.

Nope, I’m right there with ya. I start usually an hour before sunrise….just threw it out there for the less lycanthropic among us.

Anyone interested in caching prior to the Janboree event on Saturday.

I’ll out in the Sussex/Waukesha area at 5 am if anyone wants to join me. Then getting to the event for a pancake breakfast.

Just as an FYI sunrise is at about 7:25am…..I’m just sayin’

I actually start almost every day (weekends) of caching before sunrise…which explains why I normally DNF my first attempt of the day.

If I had a few more to find in the area I’d join ya.

Trekkin’ was out for a third time trying to locate one of vtwinspin’s new evil hides yesterday. He had even brought a mirror to try looking underneath the nearby dock, knowing the way Dean likes to hide things, when a county cop car pulled up. Motioned for him to come over, and asked “Whatcha looking for, gophers?” Dick told him, no geocaching, and the officer told him to carry on. He looked a little while longer and decided he’d had enough, and just as he was getting the truck started, one of the city cops pulled up and started looking around where he’d just been looking!

So I guess when they have the next WGA bingo game, you all know who you can get to sign the square about “questioned by the authorities!”

Well he won’t be the only one….I wonder how many of us have been questioned? It’s always a hoot though…unless they reach for their gun.

That is why I don’t like city hides….

    What a durable unit!

That cracked me up as well…I thought about that today as I dropped my GPS60Cx on to the edge of an open ammo can….
I’m watching that UTube Chanel so I’ll post the new vids as they come out.

I have posted the above in the thread stealer’s thread but was requested to post it here also.

    Thank you for that.

And in case you missed in thread stealer’s, I too think that the “Any Location” Wherigo games would be pretty lame and no improvement over the games already on the GPSMAP60s for example. What I’m hoping for is that the location specific “Cartridges” have more to offer with interactivity and a real geocache at the end.

As I have no Palm this unit is very attractive to me. I’m hoping the issue of the map overlays as 3 Hawks has mentioned will be resolved shortly (if they are working on it that is).

Well having spent several hours playing with the Wherigo build software currently offered, it is clear that this is in no way ready for use by more than the most adept computer savvy folks. While I think Wherigo has great potential, it is still too early in the development stages to get rolling with at least the building side of this new concept.

While I do hope that GC will simplify things for the masses, that time is not now.

To hear them talk about this at Groundspeak, they seem to think that “everyone” can grasp this level of technology. Its pretty clear to me that only programmer types will be able to manage the SDK they put out for this technology.

For what its worth, they don’t seem to be too interested in combining wherigo with geocaching.

As the builder is set up right now it would be very difficult for most people to create a cartridge. I will figure it out cuz…well cuz I really want to. The project is still in the beginning stages and they are working on making it easier….

As for the combining Wherigo with Geocaching, they do have “plans” to incorporate Wherigo with geocaching (at the very least as a Hybrid variety cache), though that may not happen until the “Phoenix project” gets implemented later in the year.

Here is a link to a discussion about Geocaching/Wherigo where Jeremy makes some comments about the integration:

I played with the cartridge builder and found it very difficult to create a cartridge. If this is to fly with the masses they will need to do a lot of work to simplify the process of cartridge design….or at the very least create comprehensive tutorials on design…but what they have thus far is an “Alpha version” and is thus a work in progress.

Playing the cartridge in the simulated environment seems fairy easy and works pretty much how one would expect. As you walk around things pop up as you reach real world locations, you are then able to examine real or virtual items, put them into your inventory and “Talk” to virtual people.

I think there is great potential for Wherigo but on CGs side there is still a lot to do to make this whole process user friendly.
