I just don’t get the attraction.

For me it would just be doing something different. I’m not a big fan of driveups either but the series provides for me an excuse to go to IL and also gives me a quirky diversion from my normal caching routine. Also this series will allow me to practice my stealth technique; after this series I could earn my brown belt in steath caching.

Yep I saw it was disabled as well…What time of year is best to do this series?

6 hours huh….I have been meaning to hit IL one of these days….I have cached in 8 states and haven’t made my way to the one closest to me yet…wierd.

ALso forgot to mention…Great log you wrote 🙂

I tried to open a PVC container about 2 weeks ago and finally gave up after two visits….Next time I will travel with a pipe wrench.

It is my understanding that the base map is always there, and that the Mapsource maps are loaded on top of it.

Correct, if you delete all the maps you are left with the base map. I don’t remember if you can delete all the maps through the menus on the eTrex unit, or if you have to download a blank map set with Mapsource to get this to happen.

You may also want to do a reset of the unit before selling it. This would clear out all the Mapsource maps, plus waypoints, routes, tracks, personal settings, etc. restoring it to its “out of box” state. Information on the secret key sequence for the reset can be found here:

    http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/secret.htm
    and
    http://www.geocities.com/etrexkb/undoc_etrex.htm

Now are the Mapsource maps loaded into your eTrex the ones that have to be unlocked (tied to a particular unit)? If so, is there any way of undoing things so you can download maps to a different unit? I’ve never sold a unit so I haven’t had this problem…

Boy oh boy so much information. Looks like I have all kinds of options….I’ll play when I get home….thanks all.

You could simply load one map, say somewhere out in the middle of Kansas, and all that would show up around here would be the base map.

I’ll try that. For some reason I thought that when you loaded the new maps that the base map went away…..
If that works I will be listing this for sale shortly. I was caching with Greyhounder and her Garmin60; I so need a GPS that will autoroute.

Thanks All, If you would have asked me a year ago when I found my first cache. I would have never thought I’d find this many. Now I just set my heights a bit farther.

LB7- When you come up to visit your relatives we ought to make a day of it collecting a few more.

    THD

I’ll be there this Sat….perhaps I could sneek away for an hour or 4…Appleton is a cache rich area I could spend two hours and come up with easily 10 to 15 😈 I may have to make a special trip up some day to attempt to clear the area…OK maybe more than one trip…

I have not tried that. However, I sold my Legend C with the mapsource still installed. When I sold the GPS I offered to load what area the buyer wanted installed. It’s obviously not hard to install an area but it sounds good to the buyer. Just an Idea for you.

That is a good idea; I just wish the units memory was larger….I think I can get about half of the state or so on that unit.

Didn’t greyhounder actually come in 7th? You two could “share” the error coin or something.

Yep, she did in fact come in 7th……I was 38th (or something like that). They are sending me a new coin with the same tracking number on it so I will have the extra one hanging around…..But as the coin is $18. I don’t so much mind having the two for one special.

Lostby7, when did you receive your coin? I checked the site the other day and the showed the coin as still being in pre-order status. Hopefully I will be getting mine soon too.

I got it on Sat the 30th. They placed the engraving orders in batches. I was among the first batch engraved. An order will be slowed down if you ordered any of the decryption coins…I did also receive a “Shipment notice” in my email a few days before the coin showed up on my doorstep.

    Grats!
One of these days I may even meet up with you on the trails, though I did do one of your caches in the past 10 or so days….perhaps we’ll cross paths ot the Janboree.

in reply to: coin quest orient express finish #1767834

Guess I should have checked my email….they are sending me a corrected coin…. 😉

This next game should prove much harder now for me as I have really been clearing my area of late…..I go my coin from the game but was bummed to see that it was engraved wrong.
Should have been engraved to say: “Lostby7”
Was actually engraved as “7th Place lostby”
Now if I was 7th place it wouldn’t have been so bad but I came in 38th.

I contacted them about it and I’m hoping they will take care of the situation, but I haven’t heard from them about it yet…perhaps after the holiday they will get back to me.

yep it got me off my butt as well…had a great past two months; much of that due to the game.

where is this–its not about the numbers stats–thing?

i logged that bug all year, but this year decided to retire it and save myself the time. the idea was that i would be able to read thru where i had been that year in order of caches done. but having never gone back to read it, i decided not to continue. ithink i started because i didn’t want to release the coin once i bought it.

It can be found on the main page here on this site …look in the lower left hand corner….in fact it’s on this page as well look left in the “Quick Links” box.

in reply to: 6000 miles of geocaching #1767733

I put on hundreds of miles this month and thus far in my 2 years of caching I have logged

“Approximate cache-to-cache distance: 16,164.45 miles (26,014.16 kilometres) (Excludes locationless and known traveling caches)”
