Okay, so Commander Bob is nicer than I am these days, so he won’t say this. Me…I’m not nice so I will!

No one is telling you that you (“you” being a general term for all cachers) have to like the idea of the “finder’s tree” or even practice it. What’s he’s trying to say, without saying it aloud (or in print) is that there are some people who find it necessary to find a cache, announce where it is to everyone else around and then linger for Waaaaaaayyyyyyy to long at the area. Some people think that every person in their group has to spend ten minutes digging through the contents of an ammo box before passing it to the next one who then does the same thing. Some people think that it’s okay for them to tell other people where a cache is hidden (even if the latter hasn’t asked for help). Bob is simply trying to get those who travel in groups to respect the desire of other cachers and ask them to find, log and move on before the next group arrives. As for the “finder’s tree” being used by everyone…that will never happen, that is for each group to decide. If you hear another group arriving at a location, and you know that the cache is still out, stop that group from seeing the hide and give them the option of whether or not they want to see it in your hands, or find it for themselves. We’ve NEVER had a group continue toward a cache that we have told them was still in the open. They have always waited until we replaced it.

Also…may I suggest that hints (or should I say EXACT locations) be given over another channel!!! If someone is stuck on a cache, ask for help. But please switch to another channel before announcing the cache to the rest of us. Can’t we keep the main channel open for general business? It isn’t that hard to say, “I need help with ‘Dang, I can’t find another one’…does anyone have a hint for me?” “Sure, I can help…switch to channel 9000 for your hint.” “Thanks, I’ll do that.” Then anyone who wants to hear the hint can go to that channel and listen in. Thus allowing everone else the opportunity to find “Dang, I can’t find another one.” It’s not that hard. It doesn’t take that long. And no one will break if they spend 20 seconds changing channels on the radios!

Bottom line for me: Everyone of us needs to remember that we are not alone on the trails. We all need to respect the other cachers involved in our event.

(editing for those who need to see it edited…yes, I know Bob already said some of what I said…I’m just saying it again and a bit differently because some obviously didn’t get what he was saying. I thought I’d give them another chance to figure it out. This is just me being out of line again.)

You can just hand those to me at the picnic…I’ll be the one looking for the door!

Perhaps you should read my posts more often then. I don’t usually edit them.

But for you I’ll make an exception.

WHAT?! Is there a point to this question? If you have a jeep and want to hold onto it, then do it. Log it in and out of every cache you visit…who really cares? It’s just another travel bug isn’t it? (How many people did I irritate w/ this post?..again, who cares?!)

The WGA is not the only state doing these types of events, and we are not the only ones having trouble w/ deciding how best to approach the logs. We are however the ones being made examples of. This bothered me at first because it felt like the rest of the Geocaching community was picking on us. At some point (docapi’s mentioned thread) Bob and I were singled out as the “bad guys” and many people piped in on their version of what he and I should be doing with our logs. We went back and forth for a bit in an attempt to justify what we were doing, but then we figured a couple of things out.

First: Most of the people who were commenting spent more time in front of their computer screens than on an actual trail (I even posted stats on the thread…oh yes, that really ticked them off!). The ones who were out caching didn’t seem to care what we were doing.

We spent a lot of time dealing w/ emails from other cachers. The end result? After the guy who started the thread took a good look at what we were really doing at our events he got over himself and posted a note in our favor. He apologized via email and went on with his life. Others however kept the thread going. Bob and I had already walked away from it.

Second: We know what is put in to every cache we log. We know that it was a matter of someone hiding it, giving up some numbers for a GPSR input, a walk, a hunt, and a hootie. So for us that means one thing. A LOG on our groundspeak page.

Bob and I attended an event last month in Bloomington/Normal, IL (GCP11V). There were a number of temporary hides there. At the time of the event they were attempting to acquire approval of a page they could use to log these hides, as well as future CIGA event hides. It didn’t go through so they did what has been done by others. They hid a permanent micro (GCPET4) and all temps were logged on that page. The micro will remain but future seekers will only log one find. After talking w/ several of their board members (they’re caching buddies of ours), we learned that this is what CIGA plans to do for each event. (Team Badger has used a similar method to commemorate gatherings.)

Missouri, Texas, Florida…many states, many methods…

From my view: Only a cache owner can govern how and when a cache may be logged. They are the ones who set the rules for the cache. If the cache owner allows 1 find or 100 finds…who cacres?! If you were there, you saw the logbook (stamp, sticker), put your name/mark in the appropriate spot then…log it! The only time I have issue w/ a log is if the person didn’t see the cache…in the physical sense! A no find is a no find! (well said by the way, Bec)

After much babbling on, I seem to have forgotten to make my point, so here goes. If you found it, log it…if you choose! (Some of us haven’t even logged all the permanents, right Socko?)

He’s a good one to have helping you! Cachew was the one who taught me the correct way to use my GPSR! Before he came along I was entering waypoints manually, using the coordinates to find where I was going (instead of the compass), and had no idea what GSAK was. There are of course other things he’s helpful with…but I’ll be here all day if I don’t stop now.

Good luck with your club and do give Cachew a shout!

Thanks for the news of the report Tony! And thanks for the link…I was getting dizzy trying to find it on their website. (Are you bucking for a promotion again PVT? I guess I’ll have to take you on as my assistant since you’re so good w/ the communicating thing!)

John and Rhonda…what can I say about your work here? The report makes me proud to walk in your company! They couldn’t have chosen two better people to have walked this report with them! You guys rock! (Nice little plug for the series there LT)

So when will we see our new cache buddy at a Badger Run? (oh, wait…we’d have to have one for that, wouldn’t we?!)

Can’t wait to see you and congratulate you in person.

in reply to: EAA Fly-in #1738201

We’ve been EAA members for years, and had floated in and out of the event several times. My kids spent the week there in 2003, while I spent the week “While you were out-ing” my daughter’s bedroom. They had a great time! We’ve got some pretty cool pictures. My son flew left seat twice, the second time actually landing the plane. Flying’s kind of in his blood (long line of airline personnel on Dad’s side…short line on mine).
There are caches in the area, but I’ve never been up to do them. (What’s that about?)

I would like to go on record as saying that I find the above statement EXTREMELY RUDE! While I understand the necessity of having a general idea of those players involved, I also understand that sometimes there are changes in plans. There may be someone who had a change and IS now available, but due to the fact that this message is out there, they aren’t going. As a member of the WGA I find things like this send a bad message to our members, as well as shadow readers of our threads. We should be thankful for all who wish to volunteer, and we should make a place for them no matter what! I find it very hard to believe that if someone shows up to help, they won’t be allowed to do so because they didn’t send an advance email to someone else.

One question: What the heck is happening to the WGA? (yeah, I know…another MB attack…get over it!)

Sorry Ray, “fun threads” are not allowed here. When someone tries to start one, someone takes offense to it and removes it or starts whining about it until someone else removes it. The problem here is that people take everything WAAAAYYYYY too personally. Those of us who do try to have fun are stifled by the powers that be. So, it’s just easier for us to play in emails back and forth than it is to run the risk of stepping on toes or knocking people out of joint. (Having said that…Dawn, I haven’t heard from you in a while…are you okay?)
