… Summarizing, it sounds like Magellan’s standard unit can get about the same reception as the Garmin x units at a lower cost, but they also appear to have some significant quality issues and poor customer service, which is NOT a good combination.
??? I’m confused! Before this post, there was only one person who didn’t appreciate his Magellan. Most of the people who commented stated that they liked the satellite locks on Magellan’s better than Garmin’s. Also, didn’t the one who returned his get a new brand, and the ones who had problems later got the same unit in exchange (which they are happy with). As for customer service…when’s the last time you heard anyone talk about getting their Garmin fixed for free? If Magellan’s tech service can’t help you over the phone they send you a label to mail your unit to them. Once they figure out the issue, they let you know the cost of repair before fixing it. Plus, when they send it back they send little surprises along for free. The last two people (which were over a year or two ago) who I heard got their units fixed, never paid a dime! So, try them out and see for yourself which you like better. Me, I’m sticking to my Garmin for turn-by-turn and my Magellan for signal lock at the cache sites!
Sorry I wasn’t able to make it out to help with this one! Commander Bob tells me it was a great success! Thanks Brian, for putting it together and getting the newbies off on the right foot!!!
Congrats to the current list of cachers who were also on hand to help out.
On a personal note…thanks for the shiny Brian! (Yep! He handed it to me when he got home, and now it belongs to the Team!) 😆I noticed that 14 have viewed this thread…not sure if anyone has contacted you, but maybe some details about what you’re selling and a price posted here would help.
My first GPSR was a Magellan SporTrak Map. I used it with NO PROBLEMS until Bob bought me a Garmin w/ turn-by-turn directions. I still love my Magellan and we take it with us to all our outings. When it comes time to walk under a lot of cover…out comes the Magellan! When we need a stronger compass reading…out comes the Magellan. When I just want to pick on Garmin users for..well…for being Garmin users…out comes the Magellan.
I can’t say what others have done, some have had good and some bad experiences. But, for me, the Magellan has always been great!

Yeah..congrats to them.
Too bad you left out jthorson and The Lil Otter…among others!
Brian…if you want some temps hidden and the one offering to do that for you has found issue with it, let us know. We’ll be glad to help you out!
Also, hide as many as you want, it is your class after all. Though last year may have gone one way, this is a completely different group and you have no idea what will happen here.
As for the types of hides…while a virtual used to be something cool to see, they are only part of waymarking now and don’t even need to be part of your geo class if you’re going for the “norm”…but as I said before, it’s your class, do it your way.
I have to think that with all the publicity the sport has gotten over the last year, that the mindset of people going to your class will be a little different than in previous years. So…have fun and we’ll be there with grins and GPSR’s on ready to help in whatever you need.
MajorBrat
ps…Commander Bob says 12 on two paths would be good so the class can be split. But whatever you want.

When you die, we’ll tan your hide, and turn your ….ah …. real TB into ahhhh …. real TB. ??Then we will pass it around to all the events!
Does that mean she’ll be attached to the plastic holding your ashes?

Just my thoughts..

While we still hunt temps on occasion, and log them eventually if we do…at our own events we don’t hide them anymore. We agree that once in a while it’s nice to simply socialize with fellow cachers. We didn’t even let anyone drop bugs in if they weren’t leaving them w/ someone else to take away from the event.
We went to the campout and did two things: Bob went on the power caching run with Tony, Dave, Duane and Mike, while I took a more low key approach to the day…I walked only a few with Rhonda, Andrew, Tim, Carole, Mara and Justin. We also had an escort…Jeff.
We spent a lot of time talking to people and playing around home base. I didn’t miss the “run” and Bob was too pooped to appreciate it. So…we vote for the social aspect. (Did I make a point here or is my brain still frozen from being at Wrigley Field all day?)

ps…I love your caches Lorrie!
Hey Brian…contact Kelly…spiderjugs…this is her stomping ground! She has most of the hides out there. If she’s able to, I’m sure she’d love to help you out. Plus she’d get to watch people seek her logs.
Not sure if I can take the night off from work…this is the week we get home from Texas…but chances are Bob will be able to attend. We have 4 GPSR’s that can be used that night. Bong is only a few miles from our house, so even if we’re not able to attend, we could make arrangements to loan the units to you if you’d like.
Bong is a nice place, and has many trails with lots of hides. Some better than others, but there are a lot out there.
One point I’d like to make about Bong…it is FULL OF TICS!!! We’ve never come out of there without finding several on us. It’s not a place for you to take the dog out for a walk unless you plan to search him extensively ASAP! Depending on the weather, mosquitos feast there as well, but the main pest is the tic.

Nope, never did. No one ever should…the only numbers that matter are the ones following your own name. And those really don’t matter either! It’s not about the numbers, it’s about the journey…but then I’ve said that before.

Awwwww…thanks! We have fun writing them! Sometimes there is almost as much silliness while logging, as there is while caching.
Hey Russell…no worries! The WGA camp out is this weekend. Once people start logging that, those watching what you’re doing will forget all about you and start jumping on attendees of the camp out.
