To anyone who has thought about it, but just hasn’t done it…GO DO IT! This is a fun series to do! Yes, It’s time consuming, but since you onlye have to do one stage a month, just think of all the other caches you can do near each completed stage! It’s worth the time.

    Nice work Cheeseheads!

THERE’S NO REASON FOR THIS THREAD! THESE QUESTIONS SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEFT ON THE OTHER ONE!

I can’t believe this thread is still going! But since it is…

It seems that there are some who think “holding classes” is the only way Geocaching can get introduced to others. You’ve got to be kidding me!!!!!! Geocaching is everywhere! There are news reports being done all the time, both on television and in the papers. The numbers of cachers is growing every day. While I’m sure there are many people out there who did get involved because of a class they took, they didn’t hear about that class while they were there. Someone told them about it first. Or they read a sign. Or they saw a poster. Whatever the case, they didn’t just walk into a building, pay a fee and say, “Hey, cool, a Geocaching class! Man am I glad I just paid a fee for this!”

I had been caching for several months before I heard of a “class” being held. And guess what, it was free! There were people there from all over. Natloh had it at a library and charged nothing. There was a powerpoint presentation, some literature, a few temps, TB’s, stories, and gee…did I say it was free?

Should we make a list of all those who paid for a class to introduce them to the sport? Now, let’s make a list of those who didn’t pay. Oops…I’m out of ink from the second list.

Point, STOP CHARGING to “help” people learn what you love!

Also…what’s the point of starting a new thread to ask the same questions that are being asked here?

Like I mentioned in the Event caches – topic over on “Announcements” I am NOT trying to be sarcastic when asking these questions. These are things I have genuine concern about.
    1. If we (the WGA) decided that classes should NOT be held/listed as an event on GC.com, then how are we going to get the word out to cachers out there, when our membership in WGA is FAR less than the # of cachers in the state??

    2. Does anyone feel that the idea listing/posting classes ONLY on the WGA would be a Benefit of being a member & possibly be a reason more cachers to join??

Ok the 2nd question is almost too stupid to ask (LOL) since I am inquiring with people who are already members.

It’s not the WGA who are deciding these classes are not allowed on Groundspeak. Try as they may, the WGA is NOT Geocaching! There is a whole other Geo World out there. In fact, the WGA is the spawn of Groundspeak. Pay attention because some of us are tiring of repeating ourselves:

Groundspeak has set rules and regulations governing events. They have been lax as of late about some of these rules. They are now trying to correct that. Our little discussion is one of the things they are correcting. Case in point, charging for events. It’s not allowed to cover expenses paid by the event “host” So stop doing it!

Wasn’t there some issue with TB’s missing tags recently? It oculd be that this bug has fallen the same fate. Perhaps if you post a photo or discription of the bug, someone may recognize it and contact you. Hope you find it!

    BRAVO!
This time every year there’s a discussion begun about this topic. Last year evolved into the discontinuation of Events being allowed as COTM.

Perhaps this year we can do something about an entire series of caches being voted in. Shouldn’t they be listed as “caches” of the month?

Perhaps we should start voting on categories?
    Cache of the Month
    Multi-Cache of the Month
    Series of the Month
    Event of the Month

If only one cache is nominated, only one cache will receive votes. If 75 caches are nominated, one would presume 75 caches will be voted upon. If a cache is not nominated, and someone wants to draw attention to it without stepping up to nominate it, there is a page for that too. It’s called “Recommended Caches” and is there for everyone to see. If 1/4 of the people who post on these forums would nominate/vote for COTM we’d see a lot more caches being recognized. As for COTY…well there can only be twelve of those nominated/voted on.

Even if there were a running total of “Wisconsin’s best caches,” it would still be a popularity contest. The more visits it has, the better off the chances are it will be listed. One cacher may absolutely love the cache, and another may wish they had never gone there. See…still a popularity contest.

I would like to see a time when one could only nominate a cache that they actually logged that month! A cache I visited in 2003 and loved could today be in great disarray and need to be archived, thus not really qualifying it for COTM.

Just some more thoughts on the subject…not meant to “tick” anyone off, so stay calm people!

That folks, is how it is done!

Ever feel like you’re talking in circles Brian? Glad it’s not just me that’s catching grief these days. Sad that some people just don’t get it, no matter what is said.

Perhaps next time we host an event, instead of a tip can, we’ll put out a donation can and ask for $ to help cover the gas we used to get there. And then there are laundry costs for the soap, softener, electricity to run the washer/dryer, and let’s not forget the water heater we used to ensure we had on clean clothes…gotta pay for that household gas as well.

As for our meal, well, we’ll just eat and leave when no one is looking. We hear that’s acceptable practice at events in WI.

Yes, this was posted as a joke. It’s simply a way of showing how silly one’s reasoning can be when it comes to “hosting” and event.

WHY in the world would you charge someone to attend an event where there is only you, a room, a computer and some lights that go off when you ask them to?

Maybe Bob and I will host a Geocaching party (not event) at our house and charge people $ to recoupe the cost of the food/drink we have sitting out for them to partake of…hmmmmmmmmm…sounds fun!

Thanks Brian. I know a lot of people that will be glad to hear these are being watched now. Many of us have wondered about them for a LONG time.

That would be awesome! but is that a GC.com thing, or just the concept of the sport?

Why not just list the owner as: Team Deejay and “West Dogpatch Parks Department and Barber Shop”…? That would show the Team and also state that they had help.

If they want to attract new blood to geocaching with a “Beginner’s Geocache Workshop” the local paper or a spot on the 6:00 news might be more appropriate. Those searching the cache listings and would find their event cache area already beyond the scope of their event.

The survey also suggested such fees were seen as excessive, unless there was more then just a class, say an overnite stay.

They can still hold the event as they see fit, it just wouldn’t be listed on the GC.com website.

****I just cut and pasted this from a “Parks Department” (also listed as owner, a WGA member) event listed on GC.com:

Isn’t this exactly what you’re talking about Brian? In fact, there are several events listed on the Groundspeak site right now which are being done in this same fashion.

Side note…some of the “hosts” are not only logging their own events, but also the temps, and on top of everything else, they’re drawing a paycheck from the Parks Department while they’re there. Sounds kind of cra–y to me! But then haven’t we all said, “If only I could get paid to cache!”?

It’s so cold that the only coordinates I gave the newbie are:
    N 42* 35.483
    W 088* 25.827
Now if we can figure out a way for him to log them…

in reply to: GPS question #1758827

My first GPSR was a Magellan Spor Trak Map. It has always been a great unit. It doesn’t have turn-by-turn mapping, but has one heck of a signal lock (it rarely goes out…even under the most dense cover or bad weather). The compass is also very good on the unit.
It’s very user friendly. I like it so much I got a second one to share with others walking with us. A few have gone and gotten their own after using it.

I just found this link…you may want to check it out: http://www.adventurestation.com/product/view_product.asp?x_ID=142202&CatID=14179

In attempt to turn me into a Garmin user, Bob got me a etrex legend C for Christmas. I like it a lot too, but I’ll be carrying the Magellan as well (just to make sure we get where we’re going!).

Good luck on your search for a new unit!
