Fun little question! I carry a backpack with me. I have my GPSr on a lanyard around my neck. In my backpack is:

    *bug spray
    *small first aid kit
    *palm pilot
    *bug spray
    *pencils/pens
    *extra log books
    *bug spray
    *trade items
    *cell phone
    *bug spray
    *a change of socks
    *extra batteries
    *bug spray

    I think that’s about it.

As for the pepper spray and raccoons – my deputy hubby says it often takes more than one shot from a sidearm to kill a raccoon. When he gets home later, I’ll ask about the pepper spray. I would imagine it would work at least long enough to get you out of the area….

    Fun thread!

When Papa Fishcacher isn’t w*rking, he reads and plays computer games and reads more.

Mama Fishcacher w*rks part-time, does everything around the house, and when there’s downtime, she likes to garden, read, and do jigsaw puzzles and word puzzle books. On occasion, she has been known to partake in cross stitching.

Little Fishcacher is going to be in 2nd grade this fall. He loves to play baseball, swim, ride his scooter, and play video games. He also keeps trying to elude his mom as she chases him, trying to get him to read over the summer break! 😉

Super! I’ve always found Iowans to be a friendly lot. I look forward to meeting some of the caching variety!

    Something to think about…..

Or maybe there is a current officer in your midst…. Papa Fishcacher is a deputy here in our county. He wasn’t terribly offended by the slang at all. He does however hope all of you realize that any officer that stops anyone any day is just doing his job protecting the citizens, and trying to come home alive to his family each night.

By the way, Papa Fishcacher did LOL at your story! Especially the “You expect me to believe…” part!!!

I was glad to hear you had a nice officer encounter that day! I hope we find him around here sometime soon!!!

Honestly, being a gal who caches alone about 80% of the time, I probably would’ve turned right around and headed back to my car for my safety. (I’m not fond of confronting a group of guys all by my lonesome. Gimme a group of elementary kids or small preteens and I’m all for speaking up and saying something though! Hee hee!) I wouldn’t have called the cops unless it sounded like they were harming someone or doing serious damage.

I think what you did was just perfect. Way to go!!!! I think it’s great those kids picked up after themselves! Just goes to show, not all kids are irresponsible!

I’ve finally cached in a different state! I found two in Minnesota last week.

At the end of the month, I plan on adding Iowa to my list also.

The tension builds as week after week it’s hike, hide, hike, hide… One night Buffie can’t take it anymore and beats in Binky’s brains with his own Garmin Map V (she wouldn’t think of wrecking her Magellan).

Now the dilemma – where does she hide the grisly cache? She goes to her lover, Casanova from Team Lothario, a veteran with over 5000 travel bugs to his credit; none of them moved. Together, they turn Binky into a 6-part multi-cache spread over 3 states. (It doesn’t get listed on geocaching.com.)

They try to build a new life for themselves. They both agree on caching for the hide. They both use Magellans. They become Team Sympatico.

There is terror in their idyllic life. No matter what the waypoints, their GPSs invariably lead them to the horror of Binky’s parts.

What do you think? Should I pack my bags for Cannes? Sundance?

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!! I love it!!!! Yep, pack your bags!

If you see Socko at an event, please step up so you can be part of his mission.

And, he has a special memorial geocoin on the cover that he will share with you to log as part of your being in his book.

Another variation of the “personal travel bug” .. very special, neat .. hope you will consider being part.

That is VERY cool! I’d love to see the book sometime!!!

I thought it was pretty interesting that the WI center of pop. and the WGA center of pop are fairly close to each other. If I look at that map and try to figure out what town is near each center, it looks like this:

WI center of pop – approx Manchester. Unincorporated. Home of the “Little Britches Rodeo” each summer according to one website though.

WGA center of pop – approx Fox Lake. Pop of 2400.

Sounds like a rip-roarin’ good time either place.

in reply to: GPS suggestions #1747333

Sorry to hear your GPS is making you unhappy! Whine about it all you want. Where else can you go to complain about a GPS unit?? 😉

We use a Garmin 72 and love it. I like the big screen it has. And in the almost year I’ve had it, I think I’ve changed the batteries just once. (And I keep the WAAS enabled all the time, and I don’t cache at night so I don’t use the backlight.) Granted, I’ve only found just under 60 caches, so my battery use might be a little slower than those that cache more frequently. Also it’s a marine GPS, so it is waterproof and will float! (Which might come in handy on vacation in Minnesota next week! Hee hee! As well as the “best fishing times” table it has!)

And as for memory, I don’t know how many waypoints I’ve put in it, but I’ve only used just under half the memory. If I remember, it says it holds 500 waypoints. I haven’t tried getting a cable to just download the waypoints – I just enter them manually for now. And I haven’t downloaded any software in it either. I just use MapQuest to look at where I’m going.

in reply to: Benchmark Hunters? #1746942

Not all benchmarks are created equal. The ones on gc.com are NGS (National Geodetic Survey) benchmarks. Other organizations use benchmarks as well – US Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, county surveyors, private surveyors, highway departments, utility companies, and telecom companies are all known to use benchmarks that are similar in size and shape to the NGS ones. If you find one, you will find a code stamped on it that will usually give you a clue as to it’s origin. But if it’s not NGS, then it’s not added to the list kept on gc.com.
