Having served on the WGA board in the past I know how much work it is. Everyone worked very hard and there was a great sense of comradery. I look forward to serving alongside such dedicated and passionate people.
I have a passion for educating and encouraging new geocachers. I would love to see every WGA event incorporate an element that is attractive to those who are new to the game. It does not need to be elaborate but the more fun the participants have the more they will remember it.
My greatest weakness. Do I only get to pick one? I think the greatest weakness I have that affects me serving on the board is that I am easily distracted. When given an assignment I can sometimes lose track of the details and must scramble to complete the job on time. I rely on the other board members to hold me accountable to get assignments completed on time.
I was on the newsletter team when I served on the WGA board. I am still on the team as a volunteer. Using the newsletter and social media is a great way to make opportunities to participate known.
Another idea is to send out a poll asking people to respond with their skills and interests. We can then match them to opportunities to serve.
I have also found that people will participate when invited. A personal invitation through email, messaging, or a phone call will increase volunteer activity.
I have served on several boards, including the WGA. I offer opinions on topics and love to hear the discussion. I do not take sides, all opinions are valuable. I can often see a compromise when there are differences. We are all there to improve the game. We all want the same thing. I listen to all opinions on a topic before making a decision.
Hi Jen920,
Thanks for asking. I am grateful to be considered for another term on the WGA board of Directors. I served a one-year term two years ago. I bring that experience to the new board.
Creativity
I have been awarded the WGA Spotlight Cache award three times and the honor of hiding a Virtual geocache in the Green Bay airport. Those awards indicate a level of hides more unique than usually found. Likewise, I like to think “outside the box” when contributing to board and committee meetings often providing a solution other members had not considered.
Leadership
I led the team of hiders for the 2022 WGA Spring Picnic in Potawatomi State Park. That experience should serve me well as I intend to lead more teams of hiders in the future.
While serving on the WGA board, I took the initiative to chair the newsletter team. We grew subscribership and introduced single-topic newsletters that are delivered monthly.
Compatibility
I get along with pretty much anyone. I am friendly and outgoing. I just as happy to endorse and support other board members ideas as I am my own. I am not afraid to pitch in and help, often arriving before everyone and the last to leave. I usually do not say much in board meetings unless I have something significant to say. I like to hear the other ideas and viewpoints from the veteran and creative members.
Writing
I enjoy writing articles for the WGA newsletters. I often receive feedback that my articles are well done and enjoyed by members of the Geocaching community.
Hi Gypsyseeker,
We are all new at some point. There are portions of Geocaching that I have not explored yet. Like you, I love learning new aspects of the game.
I created a Geocaching 101 class just before COVID hit. I only got to present it once. I would love to dust it off and collaborate with others to create a series of 101 classes that any experienced Geocacher could use. I imagine someone has already done this. It may just take a little research to find it.
We could also create online classes and possibly start a podcast – something like Thursday nights with the BOD where folks can ask the BOD questions and possibly have guest panelists.
Great question. It got my imagination going.
Happy caching,
MavWitt
Good question Big Jim,
There are many quality caches in Wisconsin. A lot of which I have yet to find. Of those I have found there are two that really stand out in my mind.
Flower GC2Z442 and The Doctor Is In! GC6YDR6. Since The Doctor Is In! is temporarily disabled I would give the favorite point to Flower.
I have a Quality Engineering background. I enjoy identifying issues and finding solutions. I am good at looking at a process and finding ways to improve the outcome or make the process more efficient. I am an out-of-the-box thinker and often come up with crazy ideas. Some of them work, some are real stinkers. I enjoy listening to people. I have found that everyone has a story and they are willing to share it if you are willing to listen. I enjoy writing and hope to be an asset to the communications team. I enjoy seeing others succeed. I am looking forward the helping the BOD achieve their goals.
I like to try finding all cache types. I have my favorites, but I understand that every cacher is interested in a different cache type or a different way to play the game/sport. I also like to hide caches. I try to make my caches interesting to read and unique enough to generate a favorite point. As a board member I hope to help “raise the bar” to challenge hiders to create high quality caches, regardless of the cache type.
Yay. As others have said there are many benefits to committees. There are drawbacks as well, but in the end the collaboration brings better results.
I am not very good a repetitive tasks. I am good at creating systems that use repetitive tasks but I get bored with it as soon as I have created it. Hopefully there will be others on the board that will have this strength.
I served on a board once with 11 visionaries and 1 administrative personality types. That poor soul had so much work to do! Knowing each of our strengths helped us communicate well to get things done.
Hi Marie,
I have served on boards in the past and have learned that some people can dig in their heels even when the majority is voting in a certain direction. This creates friction in future meetings. When this occurs, I try to reach consensus. Not “I win, you lose” but taking everyone’s input and achieving “I can live with that” for all members.
Hi Mark,
My personal geocaching goals for this year are to:
- Complete the Badger State Challenge (counties).
- Begin the IAT series.
- Create and place 3 favorite-point-worthy caches in my area.
- Create and donate a memorable cache for a hider at both the spring and fall campouts.
My goal for the board would be to increase communication between the board, WGA members, and the public. I would love to see a subscription-based newsletter. I am interested in coming alongside others to help them achieve their goals.
Hi Becca,
Honesty, I would rather do things myself. However, I have found that people will surprise me if I give them the opportunity to do things their way. It may not be the way I would have done it, and the results may be different than I expected, and occasionally I am let down. But for the good of my sanity and developing a healthy organization, delegation is key.
It depends on who’s car it is. I would never request to drive another person’s car. If requested to pilot their vehicle, I would treat it as my own. If it were my car, I would drive to assure we got there safely and on time.
