I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but Ralph has more points already this month than any previous month’s winner. This should make for some really interesting strategy for Dave and Alex for August to see who wants to travel that far for the 50+ Lonely Caches.

Ask LB7, his middle name is Shrek or Trek or something like that.

Our 3 grandchildren introduced us to geocaching and many of our outings have been with them. A year ago the only ones they were interested in had to have swag. It’s still pretty much the same with the boys 6 and 9, but 11 year ols Emma has become an all around cacher. She went out with me last Saturday and we walked .35 winding our way through 5′ high wild parsnip and then had to stand in stinging nettle while retrieving the cache and signing the log. It was an ammo box, but the only thing she wanted was the TB. She’ll go with us any time and for her the harder the hunt the better. We usually take her along on return trips to dnfs and she usually ends up with the find. The boys are good for 3 or 4 finds and then get distracted. I plan on taking her on a 20 cache outing soon before school starts again.

Had the pleasure of camping with Wade and Tami this weekend and seeing the pleasure they find in each cache they discover no matter what the number. They also took the time to hide 1/3 of the caches at the event for everyone else to have fun finding and deservedly took first place for the campers’ favorite cache. Not only are they excellent geocachers, but if you ever get the chance check out Wade’s singing talent. Congratulations guys and enjoy savoring your accomplishment as much as we enjoyed seeing what a great family you are.

We found a laminated Brett Favre football card in a cache commemorating his game performance against Oakland right after his father died. It had a price sticker on it for $30. Did it fall out of someones pocket and into the ammo box or was it a Bears fan throwing out trash?

Congrats to Puzzler and Burrgirl. The best part of watching your quest to 3000 was reading of your adventures and mishaps in your logs. Any time you found one of mine I couldn’t wait to see what you wrote and I was never dissapoinyed.

I’ll be looking for your logs 😀
I hope you will be looking for a few of mine while you are close-by

This trip will include mostly easy ones so we can keep the kids going longer. We should have 40-50 of the caches in the Waupaca area done after this camping trip (we found 20 last September). We are going to go home through Wild Rose on Monday and may pick up a couple there. We have a coupon for a free lunch at Pioneer Pub so we’re going to check that out. Our next trip to Hartman Creek will probably include a day down in Wild Rose. We owned property on Big Hills Lake when I was a teenager so this is an area I’d like to do a little reminiscing in. Any suggestions for a couple of quick finds right in WR while we’re there on Monday would be appreciated. I know “Wild Pride” should be walking distance from the Pub.

Congrats Bec. After meeting you at the WGA Campout and seeing how much work you did for it I realize how difficult it is for you and all of the other board members to get in as much caching time as you would like. You deserve getaways like Rock Island and I hope you had a great time.

As someone who enjoys puzzle caches, here’s my MO. We don’t have many true puzzles down here.

This to me is the key. My $0.02 pissy rant:

Telling me to look at a plaque and subtract xxx from the year of the event is not a puzzle.

In this day and age of the internet and databases that solve any ROT or substitution cypher is not a puzzle. If you’re not using a Vigenere cipher or higher with a hint at the keyword, it’s not a puzzle.

Telling me to subtract 2 from the number of windows in the nearby landmark is not a puzzle.

I freakin’ LOVE puzzles. Love ’em. I play ARG’s on a regular basis and those revolve around truly mindbending puzzles that take communities to solve over the course of the games.

The examples above are wastes of my time, precisely because they’re not really puzzles. Wastes of time because people are working through a “puzzle” that will be solved every single time not with even the slightest modicum of thought but with gruntwork, simple arithmetic, or, if we don’t even want to put that effort into it, plugging the “cypher” into a standard flash based substitution solver. Then, after the “solve” is done, it’s a waste of my time plugging the child waypoint into my GPS manually. Frankly, if you need to put me near a landmark, mark your final and say “hey, check out the info on the plaque of that site over yonder. There’s some cool info over there.”

So the answer is mixed. For a thoughtful, interesting puzzle, I don’t think there’s a standard or a limit, so long as tghe final is maintained. I’d rather see a tough s|s type of puzzle sit out there for 8 months on the Lonely Cache List and remain active than see yet another plaque waiting for my uber unique subtraction skills to be able plug manual coordinates onto the GPSr sit there for 2 weeks unfound before archiving.

The category is actually Mystery and Puzzle caches. The number substitution caches that you mention are not considered to be puzzles. They are Mystery Caches. You have to remember that geocaching is a family activity and most puzzles are way beyond my three grand-children’s capabilities. They geocache with us often and love finding out about historic facts and substituting numbers to find final coordinates. I have a series of ? Caches that are especially for kids and require things as simple as counting the number of swings on the playground. A few like this in an afternoon of caching make it easier to keep the kids going.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved in this. On a smaller scale I would also like to thank the BOD for what I have learned from them and in the forums. This allowed me to just complete meeting with my local Town of Lisbon Parks Department with outstanding success. They were very receptive to geocachers using their parks and I’m now working on putting my first event together that will be on July 27th. They are also interested in purchasing GPSR and holding Town sponsered events in their parks. I’m sure I will be working close with them on that. Again kudos the BOD and the informative forums.

Last nights rain brought the total at our house in Sussex to 7″. I think the term “Cache Rescue” is going to take on a new meaning.

Actually she may be closer to 8000. She’s probably still at least 2 months behind in logging. Congratulations and thanks for all of your contributions to geocaching. We’re really looking forward to that big weekend in August.

No finds today. First one we tried was in a park (Delafield) where all of gravel path were washed away and kids in swimsuits were up to their waists in the flooded areas. Next we tried for a FTF (Menomonee Falls) and never found WP1. A passerby walking a dog said this entire area had been under water this morning. This is getting very depressing. It just clouded up and started raining again. Our total in Sussex so far this weekend is a little over 5″.

Congratulations to Noah on his first FTF (A Baby Bunny). We’re really enjoying the photos of his geocaching adventures.

    Cheezehead,

I find it difficult to follow your argument. Since you began geocaching in 2004, the WGA held a Campout in Lake Wisota State Park and at Peninsula State Park, both are north of Highway 29 and you did not volunteer or participate in either one. Lake Wisota is barely 100 miles from Hayward. Yet, you say that we need to bring WGA sponsored events north of Hy 29 so that you can participate. Both of these events were well attended by geocachers from SE Wisconsin, 300 miles away. Since 2004 we have also held 2 events at Hartman Creek, about as far from Eau Clair as it is from Milwaukee.

One object of holding WGA sponsored events at one location or another is to inconvience as few of our members as we can.

BTW Your WGA membership is free because operating costs are paid from the donations of those who do attend these events. We want to keep attendance as high as we can for the financial health of the WGA.

If a WGA picnic or campout is held in Superior or Beloit, Trudy & I will be there. We will support the decision of the WGA for any location that is selected. And we would expect a similar effort from all that wish to see this organization prosper.

I did not start geocaching until July 2, 2006, so sorry, I couldn’t help at the 2004 event. Ok, I have 2o people that will help with and event. I’. jumping up and down waving my hand to get the BOD attention that maybe an event could be help up here. If the picnic /campout was held in Eau Claire I would be there to do whatever need to be done.

1st question, how many locals helped set up the latest camping event? Where there 20?
2nd question. How many BOD’s have to be in attendance for it to be a WGA event.
3rd question, why wasn’t a news letter/email sent out asking where the event should be held cuz its for the “member” but half of the WGA members are never here, so what good does it do to ask here.
4th question, how many more geocachers are there in the state than there was in 2004? I know of 10 just in the Hayward area.

How do you get more people from the sticks to join the WGA, Have an event. I meet someone last week that’s been caching for 4 years and never heard of the WGA.

Why even go through the motion of asking where an event is going to be held? The BOD of the South East are going to make sure are going to vote to have it where they want anyways.

The WGA is suppose to represent all of Wisconsin, but it hardly does if at all. And no, it’s not sour grapes over not getting elected to the BOD. I was surprised I got 30 votes

You want dues, I’ll pay an annual dues if that’s what it takes to get something north of Eau Claire. Eau Claire is still a 2 hr drive from Hayward. Heck I’d drive the 3 hrs to Rhinelander or Eagle River to an outing. I’m not asking for an event to be in Hayward but somewhere in Northern Wisconsin(and Sorry Eau Claire is not northern Wi.) but for the other who have an extra hour to an hour and a half drive that live north of me. At $4 a gallon ,I would think that everyone would think twice
going anywhere more than 30 miles from there home

So lets say that I’m going to throw a picnic here in Hayward near the end of August. What do I have to do to make it a WGA picnic. I might get Zuma up here. So is it now a WGA event cuz I have a BOD in attendance?
You can bash me all you want now because it doesn’t matter, cuz this will probably be my last time to this board cuz it doesn’t concern me anymore. I just hope it snows.

I hope that you’re not representative of any of the other geocachers in your area because if you are (and I’m sure you’re not) you’re attitude surely wouldn’t encourage anyone to drive to attend an event there. You’re criticism of the WGA board members is totally unjust. They all devoted nearly the entire weekend to making the campout a huge success and spent very little time being able to get out in the park to hike or geocache. I was the first non board member up in our camp area each morning and the board members were already up and off to work. If anything comes out of your senseless rants I hope it is that it encourages the membership at large to get involved helping with the WGA events.
