I want to apologize for using this forum for a personal banter with Tami. My post reply to her was meant as a joke as we are good friends (I think) and proponents of logging temps. I’ll use personal messaging in the future. I’ll also have to stop reading the posts on this subject so I stop getting irritated. What bothers me is that this is the way I was taught to geocache and I enjoy the way I have done it. Our first day out in January of 2007 we met Tami on a trail. We also met Puzzler and Mindfree the same day. We thought we would be meeting everyone by spring after that day (LOL). Tami probably doesn’t remember it, but she told us about the Winter Janboree which became the beginning of our exposure to temporary caches. Then we met Auntienae and she teaches us how to log temps. This is where the subject starts at the top. Experienced geocachers and the WGA contributed to the creation of this Wisconsin geocaching culture and the key to solving it lies in re-educating. I will still attend quality events even if there are no temporary hides. I would like to see new placements of more permanent hides in conjunction with events. The problem will never be solved in these forums and I would like to see the WGA take up some type of in person approach to it. I think it needs to be done in conjunction with but outside of the total responsibility of the board. It has been contributed to by all of us and the whole burden of addressing the issue should not have to rest solely on the board members.

Don’t feel bad….I too had to ask where do you find the place to vote?

Just look to the left under the Main Menu and click on Referendums.
    Tami 😀

Maybe the teacher needs a class on how to maneuver around this site. If you weren’t out so often hunting temporary caches you might know how to do it.

These two sentences took me 20 minutes to compose. I kept falling out of my chair from laughing so hard!

Everyone should be proud of us though, the event we’re going to next weekend doesn’t have any temps. Or did you cancel when you found out about that?

Because space is so limited, we are going to watch the payment of camping fees closely. If your camping fees aren’t paid in timely manner (a week or two seems reasonable unless you ask for more time) we do reserve the right to pull your group campsite reservation and let someone else in.

The WGA Store page says you have until May 10th to pay the camping fee. Which is right? May 10th or a week or two?

So, now I have to ask this question. My Great Aunt passed this weekend, and I’m thinking of making a memorial cache.

Her gravestone is going to have a bronze flower vase built into it, that is removable. You know, the ones that showed up in the news recently because they were being stolen to recycle. I’m trying to think of a way to attach a small micro to this vase so that it won’t be in the way for myself and family members when we want to use the vase. If this works out, I may place more because all of my family buried in this cemetery, have this style of marker.

My question is, is a cache like this acceptable? My family thinks it’s a great idea, so permission from us is not an issue. But, will it be an issue with GC.com? And do I need permission from the cemetery?

BTW I won’t be placing this cache until fall or next spring for obvious reasons.

Even if it is acceptable to you ad your family, I will not search out this cache as i definitely have an issue with these types of cemetery hides.

    *** Just my 2 cents ****

Cross that one off my list. We do enjoy cemetery caches in historic cemeteries, but in newer cemeteries Sunshine stays in the SUV and I usually make it a point to walk along the edges of the cemetery. Let’s not let gravestones become the next “guardrail at a dead end”.

What about a short handout that can be given to them?

I guess since we all don’t carry a laptop with a satellite card with up when we are out caching it would be nice to have WGA flyer that can be out in our cache bags and handed to the new folks that we may meet on the trail.

What about something in business card size and format. They would be easy to carry and the cost is minimal if presented with all of the layout complete. They could be available for anyone who wanted some at WGA events.

Is there a good place to get pH testing kits? I found them in Wal Mart in the fish section, but they were kind of expensive (aprox $20) and they had a lot of them in one box. Is there a better place to look where it might not cost so much?

You can get one anwhere they sell swimming pool suplies for about $6-7. We bought the one we use at Ace Hardware.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but what do you do with the swag you do trade for? We were keeping it in a “trophy jar” but we are now up to 3 jars and are thinking about packaging the good stuff back up and handing it out at an event as recycle-swag so it can go out an be found again. However, it would be interesting to hear what others do with it?

We trade for things that we think our three grandchildren would like. What we don’t give to them directly is in a kitchen desk drawer that is overflowing. They take the things out when they are here and we usually find them all over the house for about the next week. Oh and by the way on the original subject, we carry a large supply of trading items with us and replenish caches even if we don’t take anything. I try to visit my caches at least every other month to restock them. I’ll go sooner if a note is posted with any info on the contents. I like to check on them to make sure there isn’t anything in them that shouldn’t be there since most of my hides are kid appropriate.

Congrats on #500. We got ours last October and it keeps getting better. Hopefully the next congratulations you get are for winning March in the Lonely Cache Game. As long as someone from Appleton wins we’re happy. By the time our searches expand to your area all of the caches up there should be in great order.

Congratulations! 800 will be our next milestone too. Is’nt finally a nice to be at a number that seems closer to 1000 than 100.

I see out of state logs from other Wisconsin geocachers showing up on the Recent Logs page today. Maybe Dave thinks you’re looking for Lonely Caches out of state and he’s somehow blocking youto protect his lead.

I hid things in our yard for everyone who came last year. We had enough GPSr for everyone and they all had a great time. They surprised me and had a cache for me to find too. Luckily I prevailed and made the find or it would have been quite embarrassing to get a dnf in my own backyard. The kids wanted to do it again this year, but the snow total today is already over 6″. Happy Easter everyone.

Twin Valley and Cox Hollow are Family campgrounds. The group camp area is Hickory Ridge and is in the northern most part of the park. I’m not aware of any other group area so that is most likely the main gathering area.

We use Kenco rechargable nickel hydride batteries in both units. They are about 3 years old. I recharge them once a week and have never replaced them in the field. They’ll last all weekend for events if fully charged.

in reply to: Labrat_wr Blows Past 500 #1886298

Congratulations Pete. We couldn’t find the replacement today that you and Dave did on Friday. I even fell out of the tree looking which wasn’t a good thing since last Tusday I fell down a whole flight of stairs at home. The best part of this cache though was that my 11 year old grandaughter Emma found the original container laying on the ground a few minutes later. The rest of the group thinks I knocked it out of the tree. Make sure you tell Dave about this. Too bad it wasn’t a milestone for me as it would have been well earned.

in reply to: Placing the container, then logging a find? #1886304

Not really a Lonely Cache, but I’ll go back 6 months later and find a hide that I helped OPPS5 make. They are our daughter’s family and three grandchildren. I’ve actually had trouble with a few of them, so I don’t feel guilty for logging them. As for logging replacements in the game I think it’s ok. I’m playing strictly with the intent to improve caches, but if you get another find those playing know you’ve earned it. I fell out of a tree today looking for a Sagasu replacement from Friday. I still believe geocaching is an individual sport and the “numbers thing” is your own personal thing. Tami and Wade are two of our best geocaching friends and it probably won’t bother me until they hit 25.000. Dave can win all twelve months if he wants and it won’t bother me. I even gave him a tip on one he hasn’t found yet. I guess it’s either about the numbers or not.
