Why aren’t my links working like they should?
Sorry its a feature of the site 🙂 There is a tool that when it recognizes a GC code it auto makes it a link, sad thing is when you actually try to link it yourself it breaks.

I’m sure there is lots of ideas to be brainstormed, but what comes to mind right away would be to of course have a separate special Anniversary event. Location of course can be difficult but I think try to aim for the center of the state for all to reach. It would be fun to see either what photos or historical merch or other historical items on display that either the WGA has or others willing to donate for display at the event. There is a lot of history for geocaching in the WGA and in the state and would be fun to see a WGA in review.
I’m sure many would expect a special Geocoin or merch to coincide.
20 years is another good potential avenue for advertising of the WGA and maybe partnerships with the DNR or other groups in some form. I know there could be other fun things to do that once we get all brains together as well as ideas from the members that the possibilities are endless.

This is the heavy question I think every business and organization has to keep asking themselves today with their websites and social media. Everyone wants everything and they want it now.
I can agree with everyone that there is a major need for improvement with the website. But sadly I’m also informed with the current state of the website. There is a lot of technical debt that is in place with the website, along with changes in the past year or two technically from Groundspeak and the Geocaching API. All this combine makes “simple” updates no longer simple and a very large effort involved.
A lot of the past couple years has been playing more like the cartoons when the boat is leaking and holes keep popping up and you run out of fingers and toes to plug. Now that is an exaggeration but sadly have been working more to keep things working then able to work on something new. I would like to make sure this changes.
Next the question is if a new design of the website is done right and is made to work much more moble friendly then it is today is there truly a need then for an app? Cause with adding an app that adds for additional maintenance. Of course discussions for the BOD to decide on and what is needed for the membership.
As for social media. I think everything should tie together. My thoughts always are websites are the source of truth on information and should hold the answers and social media is a great place for interaction and engagement. Both can have minor cross over as some may visit the website infrequently but others don’t participate on facebook or social media so you have to think of your target audience and how to best reach them. The goal of each platform and how they are to work together.
Difficulty with facebook as ACME shared is they have their various algorithms, defaulting of comments to show relevant vs all, and more make different things difficult there as well with making sure the right information is shared effectively. I think there are some strong Facebook groups out there already with high WGA member involvment. The forums should always be kept from a historical perspective and lots of good information in there. But hopefully we can figure a way to improve that experience.
I’ve had a long list of improvements that could be done some needs and some nice to haves. Outside of visual I think improvement can be with blog posts, as would love to see an increase in member content like had seen in the past. Site pages and information can be better organized and so much more.
Short answer is both have their place and could be better utilized and need to be used to work well together but there is going to be a lot of work needed to get the solutions everyone wants.

Always a good question and can never know a right answer to one like this. The membership and its involvement is key to the success and life of the WGA and its future. It has historically made what the WGA is what it is today and what it has done for advocacy throughout the state.
I think there can be lots of room for both improvement in gaining new members but also in improving member involvement, and I think there are various factors that impact. From the outside perspective it seems that there has been a slow down/lack of involvement of current members outside of showing up to WGA events. It seems that the past/current BOD are always having to “beg” for help and volunteers and those that do are regular helpers. Whether it is helping place caches, writing articles for newsletter/website, help with hosting events, elections, COTM, LCG, etc. This observation comes from seeing multiple posts asking for said help, decline the past couple of years of elections votes, lack of COTM nominations, etc.
Now how to improve that….. I don’t know the answer…… But I think a general one answer is Communication
- Create communication to new cachers in the state as well as existing in some form. Not sure the best way about this. Whether its through sharing at smaller events BOD or membership host. Maybe contacting various event hosts throughout the state and working with them.
- Website communication. As a common theme shared throughout the forums is either difficult to find information, information is lacking, or it just isn’t current and appealing. This solution is hard to get to with lots of effort to be done but can use some improvement.
- BOD communication. let the membership know what activities the BOD maybe working on(when able), if the membership thinks the BOD are doing nothing, why should they
- Committee communication. It seems like there use to be more involvement of committees before my times that included general membership. This can both make BOD lives easier with the added help but also allow general membership to be involved at a low commitment level and maybe some may decided to get further involved in the future as BOD.
Granted that wont solve all problems, and some will take time to evolve but that is some of my thoughts.

I guess short and cop out answer is I always enjoy learning and growing. Which for one thing is important in my field of work. I’m always looking to learn and grow my skills and I’m sure they will grow in ways I wasn’t planning on being part of the board. Outside of already being familiar with the technical aspect of the WGA I think connections are what is important. Connections with businesses and the DNR, or with the members. I think at least from the outside there can be growth in both ways for both the WGA and myself.

I suppose if you go by the type of caches I’ve hidden the most I would be a Mystery. I enjoy putting in a little extra effort and make something like the geoart or a puzzle, but willing to help if people are having issues or stuck.

Of course this question comes back to bite me!
The ‘why now’ I think I answered in the time question. I’ve been asked about being nominated for a few years but decided no, not at that time. But the thought has continued to grow, now I feel that I have some capacity to give to one of the hobbies I have always enjoyed and had passion for.
As for why, part of it is to give back and help grow what those before us have done with the WGA. I think I have different skills that could help and a passion to do so. The WGA has created many opportunities that I have enjoyed, in both terms of events and caches, but also in relationships and I would love to help rekindle or grow what has been initiated as well as work on any new bright ideas that are created.

Well if the saying “You are what you eat” is true…. I guess then I am sugar. Not the healthiest of snack but I’m a soda drinker vs coffee, and I am always snacking on some sort of candy at my desk at work. Thats what geocaching is for to help offset the side effect haha.

This has been the biggest question I have pondered and debated over myself with accepting to run. One major reason is there has been some family health issues that are still going that require my help and support. There is life, work, and more. But since moving to the Madison area I haven’t really gotten heavily involved with anything and figure that at this point there is availability to effectively contribute to the WGA and definitely where some of my passions are.

The internet is a strange place. There was a discussion taking place on the WGA facebook page about getting people to take on a board position. I know I had added my two cents in there somewhere, but even expanding all the comments in that thread, mine seems to have vanished. I know I said a couple things here as well and maybe I overlooked them, but the facebook comment disappearance kind of underscores why social media isn’t always the way to go.
Could it be as simple as if you are logged in or not?
Nope, that’s not it.
I know at least with posts made by pages that at least on mobile there are now dropdowns that you can select “Most Recent”, “All Comments”, and “Most Relevant”.
Granted all that to say is social media is made to show you what it thinks you want to see and blast you with that while not showing you everything else.

I’ve definitely played along with scam callers before and waste their time if I’m bored. Otherwise I usually pull up Rick Astley and Rick Roll them 🙂

Well might as well get in as well. Also the Walgreens we stopped at was out of flu shots, they are hoping to have some available come the first of November. I guess when they say there is a shortage there is.
