in reply to: Looking for a Bike rack. #1944240

last summer i bought racks for me and my gf’s car.
mine is 02 grand prix gtp 2dr 40th anniversary
    hers is 03 alero 2dr
she didnt mind putting a rack on her paint.
i would have nothing to do with that. so i ended up with a hitch and rack.
    http://www.thehitchstore.com
went with class 2 as i wasnt sure what i was gonna do for a rack and i didnt want to be sorry later for going cheap. install was easy. took about 90 minutes. still cannot believe i put a hitch on my car, but that is ok. beats having something on the paint and well it works fine. since i live in IA and ride a bicycle it is important to be able to take bike with me.
i looked at alot of 2+ racks. Thule has some nice ones but you also pay for them. i liked the convertable part of some of them. where they were 2 and you could add 2 to them. but that was alot of coin and i just wasnt willing to spend that. the thules are also pretty heavy. since this was going on my car and i already added 50 or so with the hitch i didnt want to add any more weight then necessary.
hollywood was recomended by the local mtn bikers as they are cheaper then thule and just as functional.
i wanted one that would hold the bikes from the bottom. not one that the bikes dangled from a pole sticking out. i didnt want to have the bikes swinging in the air to rub on the back of the car. i was told this can be fixed with a strap from tire to frame, but again i didnt want to do that.
i wanted one that the bike tires were supported.
these looked nice, but again spendy. though they were lighter then many others out there. http://www.kuatinnovations.com/

in the end i went with Saris. after i had it narrowed down i looked at specs as well as where they were made. the saris thelma was light! as in 26 lbs or so i think. which is about half of the thule rack i was looking at as well as about 2/3 the cost. this is for a rack that holds 3 bikes and is 1 1/4″ hitch mountable as that is what i can get for my car.
and saris is made in WI. Madison if i remember correctly.
the thelma is an aluminum frame in plastic to hold the wheel.
a little info i had to deal with is when i ordered last summer they were introducing a new model that would hold 29″ bikes. and that is what i ordered not knowing this was new and that the old one was on its way out. so i ended up waiting for the rack. after awhile the guy asked what size bike i had? i told him 26″. he said well if you are ok wiht it and do not plan on getting a 29″ bike we can get you into the old model for less money. so he explaiined the differences. i said sure lets do that. so i saved money and got it alot sooner as the new one was hot and hard to keep on the shelf.

    she got http://www.orsracksdirect.com/saris-bones-3-bike-trunk-rack-pink.html
    i got http://www.orsracksdirect.com/saris-thelma-3-bike-hitch-rack-4239.html
also got the locking hitch pin and locking cable.

in reply to: Looking to buy a new GPS easiest for paperless! #1942279

i vote against the explorist gc. we are on #4 since end of july. can provide more info if needed. or take some time and search on gc.com forums. some like and some hate it.
i bought a 62s after the 2nd GC stopped working my gf uses the GC and likes it. i like aspects of it alot, but i just do not like it overall.
i think the x10 series have promise though so if you want to go magellan it might be ok. the 610 and 710 have alot of good things going for them as far as features go. the x10 series also can hold 10,000 caches with all the info you want. the 510, 610 and 710 also have cameras built in.

i had looked at the 450 and 550 from garmin as well as the pn60 from delorme and the 62s.
i wanted magnetic compass and 3 axis.
i debated camera or not as i use my blackberry alot for pics as it is always with me.
i felt if i wanted topo maps i would get the free ones online so i didnt care for the t models from garmin or the top 62 model. it is nice that the delorme models come with those. so that is something that makes them appealing. if memory serves me correct the delorme models have the ability to use a rechargeable battery that you can chargs in the unit. it just costs for the battery and cable. i think….
i wanted the ability to get turn by turn.
i wanted ability to add maps

some say go for the 76 or is it the 78 garmins? they are waterproof and will float not sink like the others. they are made for boating if memory is right.

    depends on money

the new 310 from magellan is supposed to have the bells to a point of its big brothers and none of the GC issues. but idk what was stripped to get price down. i do know it has buttons like the GC. where as the 5,6 and 710 are touch screens.

some say the touch screens are not as bright in the sun. and hard to use in cold with gloves…. something to consider.

mayb get out with other cachers and use what they have to give you more of an idea.

i went to bass pro shops and played with various units to see how responsive they were as well as if i liked the feel of them in my hands. yes i was in demo mode so could get sat lock, but i was ok with that. i was more interested in feel and how the menus worked in person rather then readin specs online.

    good luck

were these placed specifically for this or were they chose to showcase parts of town?
    also
how about a bookmark or mayb info on other caches in this series on the cache pages in case someone stumbles on one while looking online for caches to hit.
    just a thought

that was the plan with joining. i know some of the iowa ppl head that way, but thought if i was a member i could look and ask myself. so instead of just browsing as a non member of the forum i thought i would join.
in november or so i was browsing and saw the regional section for SW WI and we thought dang it! wished we had known about the burger place in PDC when we were there. so for sure we will back to get more caches and check out that place. off the top of my head i cannot remember it. all i remember is that it is in PDC.

looking last night i was seeing all this talk about waterfall caches. we like those too. living up north i made it to some of the falls up the north shore. pretty!

i am from iowa, Boone actually. spent 4 yrs in the navy in cali. when i got out i moved with the then wife, now xwife, to thief river falls, mn. spent 18 yrs there. now i am back in iowa.
i had a huge list of caches to do or possibly do while i was up north in early december for about 2 wks. sadly i only hit a few of them. i forgot just how much driving was needed to go from one side of state to the other. was a great trip north though going through the dakota’s. got my first virtual on the way north. saw some pretty interesting things.
we found ourselves liking cemetery caches alot. as well as ones that are small or larger. we have done micros and even have had some that the location was worth the effort for this tiny cache.
wish there was more time and money and so on to see more places sooner rather then later.
    oh well. its all good.
