Am I wrong to believe that leaves will block the signal basically rendering my GPSr useless in the woods? Even in winter it seemed that areas with thick braches effected the reception.
Being under heavy cover will effect your gps, but it will be far from useless. Just as digging around in two feet of snow is an added challenge in winter, being under heavy tree cover is just a little bit of an added challenge that’s all.

If you want to move it to higher ground, send me an e-mail and I can help you get the co-ords changed on the website.

I will take you up on that. I found higher ground about 100 feet north. I took one set of coords when I found my cache (floating nearby). I will take a second reading when I replace the cache soon.
So, I can confirm, ammo cans do float! And as someone else said, thank goodness there isn’t much of any current in a marsh. Between that and the small bush it was by, it only rose with the water level and did not travel too far away.
If I find it during my Not SO Superfund Fox River Clean Up Cito Event GC1180N can I claim the smiley?
…..Certainly!
And as previously mentioned if I keep the cache in the same place I will tie a rope to it; the alternative is to put a beacon transmitter inside for an easier locate next spring…..
In any event it will be interesting to see if the cache is still in the same place. If the can floats, it might be downstream in the Fox River by now. Hopefully the bush that was surrounding the can kept it from moving along.
I guess I will bring both the boat and the scuba gear to look for the cache. Till then, I have disabled it but hope to get it up and running as soon as possible.
Mine is still in state.
I received it in the mail on 8/8, placed it in a local cache on 8/13, it was picked up from that cache on 8/13, taken to the picnic on 8/19 and has been in and out of two or three caches since.
I’m happy to say mine is still rolling along…..
I completely agree, as a landowner I am responsible for what goes on on my land. The same is true for DNR land managers, sure they might not own the land, but it’s their job to know what’s going on. Maybe because I am new to this hobby is why I don’t find this to be a problem at all – I’m not sure. In any event, it was quick and easy and I can’t wait to place my first cache this weekend, and start thinking of future hides.
I have just received permission to place my first cache which happens to be located on DNR owned property. The process of obtaining permission first before placing the cache I feel was effortless. The form was incredibly easy to fill out; it took me one phone call to get the name of the local wildlife manager. I left him a voice mail, he left me a voice mail, I faxed him the form along with an informal letter and a few days later I received the notification form back signed and approved in the mail. The land manager even wrote a short note to me. Sure it would be a little easier and faster to just go place the cache on my own; I feel there is nothing wrong with this procedure and see only good reasons for having it.
I feel as someone completely new to this sport/hobby that the amount of information available through geocaching.com is awesome. The tracking capabilities and level of detail that you are able to have access to, the mapping and downloading of way points is just incredible. I imagine it won’t be long before they add another feature or two which may include upgraded search capabilities.
I have a call in right now to the DNR Wildlife Manager to request approval of a new placement in a local wildlife area. I have the form all filled out and ready to go, but I wanted to personally speak with the land manager prior to sending out the form just to make sure I am following the newly established ground rules and get his approval. I will let you know what he has to say when he returns my call.
Thanks for the tip; I understand exactly what you mean. I appreciate your help. I was able to do a search on one of the words that I wanted to use in my cache and it brought up all cache names with that word in it. I guess one nice feature would be to sort the search results further by state. Regardless, it did the trick nicely.
Awesome, that worked out great!
Thanks!!
Thanks for your help; I’m looking forward to placing my first cache!
